What's it like to grow up with an adventurous, outgoing father who happens to be blind? NBC is airing a special peek of its new midseason comedy Growing Up Fisher after the Olympics [1] on Sunday, which means it's time to find out if it's worth a watch. Newcomer Eli Baker stars as a kid whose parents (J.K. Simmons and Jenna Elfman) are separating. I got a peek at the pilot, so keep reading to find out if you'll be into the new series.
- What it's about: Jason Bateman [2] serves as the narrator for the show, which centers on little Henry Fisher (Baker). When his father (Simmons) moves out of their family home, Henry not only struggles with the change in routine but with the fact that his dad has gotten a guide dog to help him navigate, meaning Henry's not as needed as he once was. Meanwhile, Henry's mom (Elfman) is busy "finding herself" and exploring new activities.
- Where it works: TV is full of unconventional families, but Growing Up Fisher has a uniquely sweet tone. Simmons and Elfman are both strong, and I'm not one to complain about an adorable guide dog.
- Where it doesn't: While the show feels genuine, this perfectly pleasant divorce that the parents are going through doesn't. Where's the yelling and the awkward conversations?
- You might like this show if: You’ve been hoping Elfman would find a good primetime home.
