"Grey's Anatomy" Rundown: Episode 2, "Love/Addiction"

Updated 10/05/07 2:01 PM · Posted by BuzzSugar · 72 comments

This week's "Grey's Anatomy" had a couple of great things going for it: a cohesive theme, a compelling case, and Diahann Carroll as Mama Burke. I thought it was leaps and bounds better than last week's season premiere, almost back to being old "Grey's" again. To hear more of my thoughts and add your own, just read more

Earlier this week, I was complaining about how "Private Practice" hasn't yet figured out how to make its cases and its doctors' lives fit together seamlessly. This episode of "Grey's" was a great example of how to do it, and really, it's one of the things the show does best. All of the patients were hurt when a meth lab in an apartment exploded; all of the doctors were dealing with what happens when their own addictions — to love, sex, work, whatever — stop being fun and start being hurtful.

Mama Burke was on the scene, and it was almost like she was there to tell the characters exactly what I would have wanted to tell them if I could leap through the TV screen. Meredith was at best inappropriate and at worst selfish when she she told the crowd at the wedding — and Derek — that it was "so over." George shouldn't be married just out of obligation. Derek shouldn't be settling for less love than he deserves. I thought Mama's point to Cristina was especially incisive: She's lost her teacher; will she still be as great a heart surgeon as she would have been if Burke were still there? Cristina didn't get married partly because she was afraid of losing her professional edge — but is it possible she's lost it anyway?

I believe that "Grey's" can only be as awesome as Bailey is in any given episode, and last night was no exception. The Nazi is back! She gave Callie a look that could kill when Callie told her she couldn't have a resident for the clinic; she guilt-tripped Meredith to get her way anyway; and she dressed down Alex for putting himself in danger by getting in the way of a drug dealer. Chandra Wilson is a joy to watch, and all of her powers were on display last night.

Some other thoughts:

  • I'm getting the sense that Gizzie is going to fall apart as soon as the rest of the world knows about it. Callie obviously suspects the affair now, but she still can't deal with being told — especially not after the horrid start to her chief residency. And George, at least for now, is respecting her wishes and not saying a word. But how long can that keep up, really?
  • Loved the scene with Cristina using her wedding gifts for professional gain. Poor Izzie, not being able to get her coveted mixer because she had nothing to offer.
  • Meredith and Derek's relationship just seems silly now. "Sex and mockery"? Fitting in with the addiction theme, Derek clearly sees that he's going back to Meredith time and time again, even when he knows it's bad for him. But can he ever stop?
  • Cristina's reaction to the explosion: "Excellent! ... Horrible. Horrible, horrible, sad."
  • Meredith really, really doesn't want to know Lexie, does she? She's a reminder of all Meredith didn't have growing up, and that's obviously painful for her. Still, I'd be surprised if they aren't buddy-buddy by the end of the season.

Any other thoughts? Does "Grey's" have its groove back? Or are you tuned out for good?

I thought your commentary was right on! I loved last night's episode as well! The case was really cool and totally reminded me of the "old Grey's"!!! 2 things I totally loved: which one you already pointed out: Christina's reaction to the explosion....I swear it was classic Christina :rotfl: I also loved the scene with Bailey and Karev, I thought it was awesome and classic Nazi on Bailey's part!

I was an avid Grey's fan, but about halfway through last season, I started getting really annoyed at the directions the plot was going in. I do not like Meredith at all. I find no redeeming qualities about her. Derek is a fool to stick by her. I hate George and Izzie together. I wasn;t interested in the Jane Doe thing. And Meredith's father is horrid. I was sad Addison left the show. I loved her on Grey's, not on Private Practice. And as offensive as Isiah Washington was in real life, I loved his character and he's a very, very good actor. So the loss of those two was a bad blow to Grey's. So, now I watch The Office on Thursday nights. It's much more entertaining.

LOVE BAILEY! She's the best! You are dead on with "Grey's can only be as awesome as Bailey is in any given episode"
It was really good last night, they just need to get all the burke backstory out of the way so i can just forget alltogether that he was on there and really why he left. I understand why Meredith doesnt want a relationship with Lexie, and Lexie should respect that. i have a feeling that when lexies mom died she immedietly put all her emotions onto meredith and now that Meredith isnt receptive she will break down, i am sure we saw the start of that. Callie is an idiot "please just for tonight, dont say anything" weak. after that i dont feel bad for her, nothing worse than a woman pretends nothing wrong for personal gain.

Much better episode.! Spot on review Buzz!
Right on Buzz!! This made me think of the old Grey's.. part of me feels like meredith will not like Lexie..ever.. i love Bailey with the residents! I miss her!!! i loved Mama Burke..direct & to the point for everyone!! i also enjoyed how McSteamy tried to help Derek out by telling Meredith he wasn't going to be there..but then Derek came down anyway..he deserves so much more! I think Meredith needs to love this man!!! I want to smack her already!! aww McDreamy you need a hug!!
I don't think Greys is redeeming itself. Christina giving her gifts away was totally in character and I still love her character. I am sooo tired of meredith and derek, i understand she had a bad life but come one they are making her character too depressing. Can someone who had a bad childhood never have a moment of happiness in their adult life? Bailey is awesome as usual and I like mcsteamy/mcdreamy friendship. I hate gizzie!
Glad you posted because i watched The Office, and my DVR didn't record Grey's for some reason. I'm not really of the opinion that Grey's ever really lostit's groove, although they were close with the whole Meredith dearth thing - that was too daytime soapy for me. But I love the show, and will catch back up next week. I'm not even bothering with Private Practice. Unfortunately, it is on at the same time as Gossip Girl and Kitchen Nightmares. PP loses. :P

I really felt bad for Callie. She constantly has people trying to undermine her,(nazi & Izzie). She can't do her best when no one will give any respect to her. And you don't have to be a nazi all the time to gain respect. All in all it was a good episode but I can't wait until the whole Gizzie thing is over!
I'm going after the geeks for my typo permit stat. My apologies if my post abpve is hard to read. I have keyboard dyslexia.

Oh yeah and I'm really over Meredith, and her sob story. She was really mean last night.

I LOVE BAILEY!!!! Last night's episode makes grey's well on its way to winning back my affections... let's hope it continues! And I agree... any episode is only as good as the ammount of screen time that bailey has.

my question is: WHO WAS AS GROSSED OUT AS I WAS WITH THE SCENE WHERE IZZIE WAS THISCLOSE TO GEORGE'S FACE? actually who was as grossed out as i was with every izzie/george scene? i swear it's bad enough burke and addison (two great characters in the show) are gone, then this all "gizzie" thing. i had to change the channel when in the hospital izzie tells george not to tell callie about them today or in a month and then all of a sudden she's leaning to him almost going in for a kiss. it was like watching siblings flirt with each other. it's disgusting!

I really like more this week episode than last one. Last week I felt it was like people going back to work after holidays ... you know, the first days, when the only thing you want is still being on holiday. This week was just great ... the scene between Bailey and Karev was my favorite. I don't understand why Meredith is so mean towards Lexi ... I understand her point about having a "different father" but why to blame Lexi ? She should fix that point with her father instead. I think we'll have great moment with the storyline about Callie-Bailey competition. On one hand I prefer Bailey but on the other hand I feel like Callie isn't getting any chance from anyone on any point ... she'll have to be strong to get through this.

"I feel like Callie isn't getting any chance from anyone on any point..." i agree with you vouninou. i feel like everyone in seatle grace is our to get her except for mcsteamy who seems to care about what is going onwith callie. so uncharacter of him...but at this momemt i prefer him more than mcdreamy. i think shandra should fix that and bring back the tough-as-nail callie who wouldn't take this crap from anyone...now she's insecure.

Last night was half and half for me- I loved the Bailey stuff, especially the scene where she flips out on Karev, and I liked Cristina's stuff as well. Meredith I actually felt bad for and understood exactly what she said to Lexi at the end about how she doesn't want to know her. However, I found myself completely tuning out and my eyes glazing over anytime George, Izzy, and Callie's stuff came up. Maybe once the show moves past those plot lines I'll feel better about it.

Loved it! Much better than last week. I really loved how honest Meredith was with Lexie (and herself) when she told her about how she didn't want to know her because their dad chose Lexie over her, and now she can't trust men. I thought that was a very poignant and heartbreaking scene. Bailey was great, Christina was hilarious, and Mama Burke was the voice of reason throughout. Hooray for my old Greys!

Jeez.. I don't get why everyone is so anti Gizzy. I am all about bff falling in love. And I'm glad they are finally both admitting it. I love them together.. mainly because I never got the George and Callie thing - how could she be 'tough as nails' and think George was her 'McDreamy'. I don't buy it.. and I don't buy into her. Bailey should keep feeding it to her until she realized that Bailey was so much better suited for the job anyways.
pinkflats - I wanted to smack Izzie at that moment... They need to get rid of Gizzie STAT!!!

Bailey is awesome! Yea Cristina's reaction to the explosion was funny...so her! I don't really like Geroge and Izzie together, I don't think they are gonna last. And I miss Addison on Grey's too!

:ROTFL: tatti. i never wanted to vomit so much in my life than that scene. lol. it was to gross and how insincere of them two to be acting like that in the hallway knowing that callie would walk on them. i mean at least carry your incestuous-like flirtations in the janitor's closet.

LOVED bailey's attitude in this one....glad the nazi is back too!! and i covet the mixer too. loved the guy that traded the waffle maker for hiding christina from mama.

love, love, LOVE Bailey. Her and Alex's scene just made the show for me last night. They need to do something with Callie fast because this isn't her- she used to be so tough. She probably misses Addison and having a female to talk to. Hope they don't make her pregnant too quickly (even though that would end the horrible Gizzie). I could totally understand Meredith last night and her point but the self-pity is just too much! Lexie is a little too perky for me in these scenes and shouldn't expect so much so quickly. Forget daddy Mer like you have for the last 20 years and go to this wonderful man who won't let you go. Poor McDreamy- just can't let go even though he deserves better. This was good- Shonda, just keep it up!!!

I love Bailey and Christina in this episode! They were the highlight for me, as well as Mama Burke's pearls of wisdom. I hate Callie and Gizzie. It is so thoroughly awkward. I think Meredith is annoying and selfish and needs to get over all the melodrama and attempt to be happy.

This episode was awesome!! I absolutely loved it! I LOVE Meredith. I thought it was great when she basically told off Lexie about her dad an everything. Lexie was acting all sorts of stalkerish. Bailey RULES!!! It was nice to see the old Bailey back. I hope this continues. I for some reason don't think Izzie and George is going to happen. Callie is so annoying to me but I am sure many people will disagree. Oh well. And the writers just need to let Derek and Meredith be happy!
I wanted to vomit when izzie went in for a kiss with george!

I loved last night's "Grey's" ... I thought it was in fine form minus vomit-in-your-mouth-inducing George/Izzie. Seriously cannot stand those two together or apart.

purselova and nomerz i'm so glad i'm not the only one. lol.
I loved it. Grey's is finally getting back on its feet again. Some thoughts? 1: "Hey, other writers! Let's all make Callie suffer!"--Alex should have gotten the formal stripping down by the Chief. Callie gave him an order, and Bailey's constant undermining of authority isn't helping any. Chief could've let her help out, try to fix 'her' mistake, but he shut her out too. She knows damn well the marriage is over, but she just couldn't take hearing it after the horrible day. George has to give her time to get ready to take the blow. 2. Alex, you're a trained wrestler. How'd a meth-head knock you out? He's probably got the muscle-mass of a mushroom. LAME. 3. Mark is more dreamy than McDreamy. And he's still steamy. I want him and Callie to reunite, and I want him to beat up George. 4. Katherine Heigl's acting the bejeezus out of this. But Izzie isn't as good an actor. No wonder Callie called her out on her obvious asskissing. 5. I love you Mama Burke.
I love love Grey's. I thought last night's episode was awesome. Izzie and George break my heart.... but I worry that she and George will fall apart before they can get together. As much as my heart breaks for Callie, I wish she would disappear. I loved ALEX last night.. he was so sexy. His paternal instincts are beautiful; I hope they continue to develop his plot lines. Bailey was amazing when she yelled at Alex.. I love grey's... can't wait for next week!

Awesome recap, Buzz! Agree 100% with your observations about Bailey; Chandra Wilson is a delight to watch, indeed! I really don't like who Izzie has become; she used to be one of my favorites, but the writers have allowed her to lose the edge that she once had. Callie's final scene was good; she knows, but just didn't need to have George confirm her fears on what had to have been one of the worst "days at the office" ever. Grey's is *almost* back in the groove.
i totally agree with pinkflats! bring back the tough, confident callie!! she used to be one of my favorite characters (along with bailey and cristina). now she's gone too soft...and please kill the gizzie romance! it's so annoying!
:ROTFL: pinkflats..yes, lock them in the Gizzie closet!!

One of the things I've alwyas loved about Grey's is Shonda & co's way of making you hate the characters you love and love the characters you hate. Meredith (who I've never really liked, but I know everyone else does) was a full on b*tch to Lexie, who I'm starting to love even though she started out as the bar skank that was going to split up mer/der. And Mark. Mark was amazing last night. I never really liked him, but ever since his whole "I came to get you back" thing his sweet side has been growing on me. He is really trying to be Derek's friend again. Also, I agree with starbright about Alex's paternal instincts. Incredibly sexy. One more thing, I am all for Gizzie. I've seenn this one coming since the first season, and it really does seem realistic. I don't in anyway support adultery, but I think that it was a terrible idea for George to marry Callie, she did basically kick him out before it happened, he was so cocked he didn't even remember (not a great excuse, but..), and he was enough of a man to not even kiss Izzie after that (well, besides the elevator) until he told her. Sorry this was so long :)

I wonder if meredith realises that she is treating lexie the same way thatcher treated her...
I love GA, it is without a doubt my favourite show, I almost strayed over to Ugly Betty but GA wins everytime. I love Gizzie, it kinda freaks me out when they almost kiss but I love that they love each other as much as they do. I love Alex, old Alex was back when he lost his temper with the dad, I want Ava to come back! BAILEY!! She rocks! Guilting Meredith into helping, the look she gave Callie, I actually had tears in my eyes when she was shouting at Alex 'cos it reminded me of the good old times. Mer/Der bores me....bring on Mcstreamry my new fave ship! Finally Cristina....Sandra Oh is amazing IMHO, she gives her all in every scene & I loved classic Cristina "Excellent!horrible, horrible.." & they way she is with her interns, she's giving Bailey a run for her money! :)

I loved thhe alex- Bailey scene. But I agree with pinkflats, I don't like what theyve turned Callie into, and I really don't like the Izzie George thing...everytime I see them together I remember the whole Isaiah Washington deal where Katherine wouldn't stop talking about it. It also bothers me that after a few months Izzie was already in love with george. I mean Denny just died! I guess its part of her dealing with his loss she tries to get attention from George. She used to be one of my fave characters but she's becoming way too needy and even more annoying than Meredith who is actually growing on me (although Derek and her have GOT to get away from each other).

I am getting a little sick of Meredith being such a _itch to her half sister. She was horrible to her in the clinic. I understand that Meredith's father walked out on her and was there for the half sister, but it is it really the haft sisters fault that she had a dad!?? God Meredith! Grow up!

Greys deff doesnt have its groove back, for me it went from a show i would take the time out to watch to something now on in the background. its lost its goodness and i dont expect it to get better as the season goes on

I like bitter Meredith and I like bitter Christina, I love the relationship that these two women have developed it's actually the strongest one on the show. I don't think that Grey's actually ever lost the it factor....all series have their so-so shows....and as much as we complain of the Meredith/Dereck relationship, I think most viewers want to see them work.

OMG, how cute are McSteamy and McDreamy??? Anyway, I wish Derek would stand up for himself, it was so sad when he left with Meredith. Meredith needs to grow up, she's being terrible to Lexie and Derek when neither of them deserves it. I loved Christina giving away her gifts for "professional gain", lol, love her. Alex was awesome last night, I didn't like him so much last week. Now I just wish he would shave. Lastly, I hate Gizzie. I don't think I will ever support them.
I love that Bailey is getting back to being Bailey! Not loving the fact that Callie is being so needy. When she was first introduced she was confident, and didnt take crap from anyone. Now, she seems unsure about everything.

I don't understand what everyones deal is..I love George and Izzie together...they're the most believable on the whole show...plus i think they look really cute together :P

i hate george and izzie together. i almost dont want to watch anymore because of them. the only reason she wants him is because she cant have hiim because he is married.

I just want to choke Izzy & George!!!! I absolutely hate that story line!!!!! I want more Bailey, Callie and Mark Sloan....I never get tired looking at him! He's totally got got McCreepy beat hands down!!!!

I'm with those loving the McDreamy/McSteamy friendship. The hotness is too much for me. They're my current favorite on this show. Meredith is so whiny and annoying and doesn't deserve Derek. I love Bailey, how long until Callie cracks and Bailey steps in? I love Callie but she doesn't seem cut out for the job. And I hate George for what he is doing to her.
