"Grey's Anatomy" Rundown: Episode 1, "A Change is Gonna Come"

Updated 10/04/07 7:08 AM · Posted by BuzzSugar · 136 comments

Oh, how I wish I could say "Grey's Anatomy" came roaring back from the summer break with an episode that would erase all my doubts about the show. Sadly, "A Change is Gonna Come" was not that episode. It had some good moments, but for the most part, I'm still left wondering if I'm ever going to get my old "Grey's" back. To read more of my thoughts and share your own, just read more

The episode picks up about two weeks after the third-season finale. Cristina and Meredith have gone on Cristina's honeymoon, Alex has grown some questionable facial hair and taken a road trip vaguely in the direction of Ava/Rebecca, and Izzie doesn't seem to have done much of anything besides mope around and wonder why George isn't speaking to her. For his part, George is back with the new interns, hoping to keep his status as the repeat intern a secret.

Among those interns, of course, is Lexie Grey. I'm going to put all my cards on the table here and say that I really like the introduction of Lexie. It shows that no matter how much Meredith tries to separate from her family now that her mommy and fake mommy have both died and Thatcher won't speak to her, she can never really cut the cord. Lexie seems to share Meredith's proclivity for discussing her personal life right in the middle of medical procedures (introducing herself as Meredith's sister while Meredith is dealing with an incoming trauma?), but I think she adds an interesting element to the show — as long as they don't have her start going after Derek.

Where this episode lost me completely was Izzie's case. The other residents and their teams are dealing with trauma victims from a car crash; Izzie lets a little kid talk her into saving a deer. In the parking lot. Using equipment from the ER that's meant for people. I get that there was this whole Bambi metaphor going (George is Bambi, Izzie's Bambi, everyone wants to save Bambi), and it led to a decent-enough payoff — Izzie finally giving her interns the what-for — but that doesn't make up for it being dumb.

Speaking of which: George and Izzie. You know, I really thought that was supposed to be over, but George ending the first episode by saying "I love you, too" doesn't give me much hope.

A couple of other thoughts:

  • Did anyone else crack up when Meredith's voiceover said "change" just as Alex handed a bag of change to Cristina? It was so egregiously bad that I wondered if it was accidental.
  • The man who ate everything was pretty awesome, though.
  • Callie is not going to be a good chief resident. I wonder if she'll toughen up — or give up.
  • Loved the residents giving their interns the Bailey speech from the pilot (and failing miserably).
  • I liked the way Lexie cheered George up and volunteered to keep his secret. But I still doubt his status will be secret for long; I'd say he's going to have a pretty tough time explaining why he's married to the chief resident if he's never set foot in the hospital before, for one thing.
  • Poor Cristina really thought Burke would be back. She's going to have a tough road ahead.
  • Meredith and Derek? So not broken up.
  • Quote of the night: "I came to Seattle to get you back." — Mark to Derek.

What about you? Were you glad to see Seattle Grace back? Or were you too annoyed with the deer scenes to care?

i'm torn. i don't mind Gizzie, but...i guess i don't mind because i don't care. last season caused some serious apathy for the show itself. HIGHLIGHTS: lexie telling george to stop complaining - izzie sticking it to her interns, FINALLY, can we see more of this izzie? - mark telling derek he wants him back BUT let's get real, he didn't come to seattle for derek and that's it. everything else was BLAH. and while i think i like lexie and i do NOT think she will be going after derek or vice versa, her introduction to meredith was ridiculous. i would have physically shoved her aside.

The whole deer thing, come on! I'll give it a few more episodes but if things don't start to look up I might have to leave Seattle behind!

I agree with what you said, but I really hope that they decide to end George/Izzie soon. On the good side, I did like Lexie more than I thought I would, and I do think the Mark/Derek scene with the "I came to Seattle" line was my favorite of the whole episode. However, I'm mostly hoping that the storylines get better (no more deer) and that the humor from seasons 1 and 2 comes back.

I Loved lexie... but george and izzie needs to stop... and his reaction to callie when she told him that she might be preggo... not cool
Gizzie needs to be over!!! I can't believe that George showed up and told her that he loves her.. :OY: Callie is not going to be a good chief resident. I miss why Bailey didn't get it, does anyone know why? Meredith & Derek are NOT broken up!! Why doesn't she just accept that he loves her damnit! Lexie - I also thought she would try to make a move on Derek but I don't think so..I can't decide whether I like her or not. I agree with Quote of the Night..Hilarious! The man that ate everything on the exam table..was utter craziness. I can't believe he had all that stuff inside of him..
The deer thing was completely lame but sort of suited izzy in a strange way. George was doing great until the very last scene. Buzz, I want my old grey's back to but I think I will give this season three chances to win me back!!!!!!!

a) 100% agree with Alex's unfortunate new hair/facial hair.... don't like it. b) loved when Izzie stuck it to her new interns, you could so see that coming - I thought she was gonna blow, but I like how she did it. c) loved mcsteamy/derek convo. d) lexie BETTER not go for Derek. i seriously might stop watching... that storyline is driving me crazy. i'm also surprised at how i like lexie more than i thought i would too. e) i like how the chief said there were bigger things in Bailey's future and it's good she's not gonna be stuck with Callie's job (who btw, is driving me crazy too - she better not end up being pregnant) f) while i was overall UNimpressed with the episode, George saying "I love you too" back to Izzie made up for the show. I'M BACK IN!!

I loved it, I absolutely loved it. Believe me when last season ended I was about ready to write Grey's off for good but the season premier gave me hope that Grey's could go back to being a good show. I admit I wasn't feeling the whole deer thing either. Hopefully Izzie's interns will come to respect her because she is a good doctor. I am still on the fence about the whole Gizzie relationship. I hate the fact that Callie is going to get hurt and I hope she will remain as a cast member on the show. I also LOVE Lexie, and I really hope that someday Meredith will be able to accept that she has family and some how be able to form a relationship with her sister. I love the friendship that is forming between Lexie and George. I think my favorite line in the whole show was when Mark was like "I came back to Seattle for you" to Derek. I hope they can work things out because they both are lacking in the friend department. I am also sad to admit that I enjoyed the other residents giving Callie a hard time. I totally think that Callie is going to crack and some how Miranda will end up being Chief resident. I also miss Burke and Addison but I can accept that they are gone. Anyways I am probably in the minority with saying that I loved this episode but like the episode title says "A change is gonna come" and I am having a positive attitude towards all the changes being made.

I can't stand IZZIE!!! She's always so, woe is me, my life sucks, I love a man thats married, FIND ANOTHER MAN! I'm married and if someone came after my husband like that, there would be a serious fight. You know, now that I think about it maybe George does belong with Izzie, because he's a big complainer to! My husband was laughing at me because every time I saw Izzie I would say I HATE HER! Otherwise I liked the show last night.

i'm soooooo over izzie and george and izzie has been pissing me off since... oh, the middle to end of the first season. i need her to stop whining. meredith has reasons to be a little irrational at times - her life kind of sucks - but izzie's really isn't all that bad. geez, woman. suck it up. and yeah - the deer thing? i felt for those interns. i would be pissed, too. but mark and derek? i love it when men have moments. very turk and JD. i just need them to break out in "guy love". mer and derek are so not over - but i'm totally hoping that callie as cheif resident and gizzie are.

I really hate Izzie/George. They're both so whiny ... "poor me, poor me" ... overall though, it wasn't bad. wasn't great either. I think I'll continue to watch.

I agree with everything tatti and Carmen said! Although Im not huge on the whole Gizzie thing the fact that George said I love you too at the end really left you in shock at the end like it used to in the beginning....so that was good! I just wonder what's going to happen to Callie? I mean she really annoys me sometimes and Im not her biggest fan but I don't like the way they are eventually going to hurt her!!! Oh I loved the Mark and Derek convo at the end, I laughed! It was awesome!
Thanks Buzz! I agree the Derek/Mark moment was very JD/Turk. It was sorta cute :P I agree I am glad Izzie stuck it to her interns. I mean I guess if I were in her interns positions too I would be upset that I didn't attend a trauma..But they also were criticizing her when Izzie went to Christina's trauma room. Suck it up interns! :P

I think if the george and izzie thing comes out the two will be in for a wakeup call... I mean callie is their boss, and for all intensive purposes she makes their schedual and decided what patients they get and what surgeries they do or don't do
I too was ready to be blown away with a season opener. But I wasn’t. Instead I sat there kind of stunned. Could there have been worse dialogue/situations? The cheese factor was so high I thought I might choke on it. Izzie fulfilling some little boys wish to have a deer made all better, and than rallying her interns to save it. The internally decapitated guys family and the “whats three blinks honey?” “ one is yes, two is no…..Is three blinks I love you?” gag, gag, gag, and than they had his little girl give three blinks before he went into surgery, I thought she was squeezing out a load in her pants. Burkes disappearance and Christina suddenly finding the Hallmark card inside her to tell internal decap guy to “hold on, don’t move, don’t leave the people who love you” gag, gag, gag. Izzie confronting george in the stairwell, “I have to help bambi” and george answering “since when do you call me that” and izzy replying “I AM BAMBI, I am in the woods lost and my mom is shot and no one will help me” or whatever the exact line was. GAWD who the flip wrote this dribble? I hope it gets better than that, or goodbye Seattle grace.

Where do I start? I was dissapointed with last seasons finale and I swore I wouldn't watch this season but I gave it a chance. The only parts of the show I liked were the guy eating things lol and derek/mark convo. I can't stand Gizzie please stop it! George doesn't appreciate what he has with callie and Izzie will never ever be happy. She had 8 million dollars and she was still complaining. I am also tired of the back and forth relationship with derek and meredith... I mean please if i were derek i would have given up.. The only character who seems to have her head on straight is Christina I love her.... PS she deserved an emmy more than izzie!

1) Am I the only one not only annoyed but the Izzie/George thing, but find it really unbelievable? I know they were BFF but Denny JUST died like a year ago and there was never any inkling before about Izzie and George liking each other. They just don't fit. 2) Lexie - eh. They make it seem like she'll be taking Mer's place ... I don't like that. If they do anything with her and Derek, it will be horrible. 3) I liked the end, w/Christina and Alex. We don't see those two interact very much, but they have a similar situation. 4) I LOOOOOVED the stuff that Derek said to Mark in the OR about Mer's family all leaving her. I love that he's determined to stay, even though he knows she's scared. He's finally going to man-up.

1.)The deer thing was beyond cheesy and ridiculous 2.) Lexie is perhaps the most annoying character since George George Costanza. 3.)Alex's facial hair is gross 4.)Derek and Mark conversation=pricelessly funny 5.)I will continue to be obsessed with this show unless they have more deer episodes.

Grey's will never be the same. I'm not watching anymore since last season sucked so bad. I'll never forgive them for getting rid of Isaiah, I know alot of people won't agree with me on this, because he was a core character and I enjoyed his relationship with Cristina oh so much and it hurt to see that it will never be again. I do love Bailey, the Chief, and Cristina but that doesn't even give me a good enough reason to watch. MAYBE if Cristina gets a good storyline because I could give a sh!t less about Izzie, George, MCDREAMY, Meredith, and her damn sister with her kindergarten haircut(horrid!). I don't understand how you can get rid of Burke AND Addison all at the same time. Not to mention Shonda has lost her damn mind with these storylines. Last season was horrific. After Denny died, it all went down the toilet. I mean come on, Meredith almost died and at the same time, her mom dies, and a couple weeks later, her fake mommy and now her dad has COMPLETELY disowned her. This is a freakin' soap opera. If I wanted to see this, I'd watch daytime TV, which I do anyway. I don't think Grey's Anatomy will ever redeem itself. Hopefully, Private Practice will do great for Kate.

P.S. You all know you won't stop watching ... it's so addicting. Even OPRAH watches Grey's.

it wasn't too bad but I am not looking forward to more GIzzie. Callie is going to get pregnant and just have a breakdown or something with all of this. Lexie will be a good pal for George which will probably alienate Meredith and Christina from him. Derek and Mark will end up hanging out because who else is there now that Burke is gone. Can I just say I also loved what Derek said to Mark about why he can't give up on Meredith- this man is Mc Dreamy and McGoodGuy for trying so hard when she just pushes him away- except for some "breakup" sex. I'll watch because I just hope they'll get it together again- please!

First of all izzie and george..so wrong.. they should have just left that plot die. I cannot stand izzie anymore.

indielove- I totally agree that Burke gone leaves a big hole. Real life drama aside, he had quite a prescence that will be hard to do with anyone else. I hope they NEVER EVER think to put Christina and Alex together, that will be the end.

"indielove", I agree with you, getting rid of Burke, and putting Addison on another show could mess up this show. I really miss Burke and Cristina together, and Burke and McDreamy together. To much whining and complaining from the characters on this show is going to be its downfall!
plot lines i hope will not happen: George gets both Callie and Izzie Preggers Alex and Christina hook up Derek and Wee-grey hook up Plotlines i would love to see: Denny comes back as a zombie and eats Izzies brain, and george inherits the millions. Meredith pushes her sister off the Space needle.

I must be the only person who loves this show and all of the randomness of it! I thought it was an exceptional season premiere. I enjoy all of the characters, not for who they are, but for how they compliment one another and make for amazing chemistry. I like how fast-paced the show is, as well. My only wish is that Private Practice will get cancelled (what a dreadful show!) and that Addison will go back to Seattle Grace!

i thought this was a total comeback premiere. well written, quirky, and touching. i thought the season finale was awful and i'm so glad it redeemed itself.
I cant agree with well written. i just cant. BTW did anyone yell at the tv like i did when Merediths dimbulb sister stepped in front of her while wheeling in a pregnant woman with no arm, to tell her "i am your sister" cmon.

sofi & curlywhirl: Because of what he said, he DID deserve to lose his job because he made the work environment tense but I don't think ABC was really thinking about the repercussions of what they were doing. I think they succumbed to outside influences, maybe people wrote in or something and Perez Hilton was posting about firing IW every single day, it was ridiculous. It was like a manhunt. Plus, Kat Heigl was running her d@mn mouth to every Tom, Dick, and Harry about the blowout, a ploy to get more publicity, I believe she won that Emmy because of it, not her 'talent'. Sandra Oh is far more compelling and comedic even as an actress(love her!). I JUST read that CSI beat Grey's in the ratings. That hasn't happened since Grey's moved to Thursday nights. Is this a foreshadowing of the future? I wouldn't be surprised. No matter how they feel that it was best to get rid of Isaiah, he took a piece of the show with him when he left. He is a spectacular actor, at some points I was simply in awe of him, especially in the scenes with Cristina. Now, they can NEVER replace Burke because that person could never take his place. Now we're stuck with that lameass McDreamy and his broken dark & twisty EX-girlfriend and her skank of a sister. Who hits on a guy in a BAR the night of your mom's funeral? Yeah, skank's the word. Pfft.

indielove- I totally agree with your Burke points. IW's presence on the set definitely disrupted everything. He is an incredible actor and just created a fantastic, dynamic character for Grey's, but I just wished someone told him to shut up because he'd be messing up a great gig for himself. I hope they don't try to find a replacement for him as in a new attending or a new love interest for Christina- shouldn't happen this season. CaterpillarGirl- yes, I was screaming at the dumba$$ move of stunning her half-sister in the middle of an emergency. I do think George will be leaning on her and I could tolerate her this episode, but I don't know how long I can deal with this perkiness. Did she do anything 'medical' throughout the show????

I LOVE Greys. Meredith and Derek were so cute. They are by far my favorite! Last season I did not like George and Izzie but last night after he showed up at her door, I can't help but like them now. I loved it when Alex called Callie a B****. I laughed so hard. It's not that I don't like Lexie but she is no Meredith and the writers better not try to act like she is. Bailey Rules!
