"Grey's Anatomy" Recap: Episode 24, "Didn't We Almost Have It All"

So after everything this season — the tremors and the ferry crashes, the weddings and the births and the deaths — this is where we end up. I thought the "Grey's Anatomy" finale this week was pretty reflective of the season as a whole: pretty predictable, but with enough good things thrown in to make me hopeful for next season. In fact, I'm actually pretty happy with the cliffhangers leading us into season four, so without further ado, read more

First of all, props to smarler and CM213 for calling the Lexie Grey thing long before I even thought of it last week. Brilliant!

I loved how the episode was structured around the sequences of Richard issuing his verdict to all of the candidates for chief. Each candidate was told no for a reason so appropriate to their characters: Mark because he was just in the race to one-up Derek; Addison because she needed the job too much; Burke because the Chief holds him to a higher standard.

But that’s only a small part of Richard’s story this episode; the rest of the time, he’s with Adele. He finds out she's pregnant, of course, but he still sits with her and makes her drink water and acts like her husband. She goes into surgery and loses the baby, but Richard misunderstands and thinks Adele has died; he runs in, sees her open her eyes, and sighs with relief. He asks Adele if she should call the father, but she says the father didn't know; she misjudged him, she says, thinking he would run, but instead he's a man who would sit by her bedside and make her drink her water. Richard slowly realizes she’s saying he would have been a father.

Cristina, meanwhile, is a ball of wedding anxiety, and the other girls literally write her vows on her hand. Burke's mom gives her the family's heirloom choker — choker, of course, in case we couldn't get the symbolism — and somehow shaves off Cristina's eyebrows, and she arrives at the hospital begging to please cut someone open.

Meredith babbles to Derek that she's herself again and now she wants him to sleep over, and he informs her that he met a girl at a bar and flirting with her was the highlight of his week. He works on the hikers, one of whom admits he accidentally swatted their friend in the head with the axe when they were falling. But in surgery, Derek realizes the strike wasn't accidental. One hiker finally admits their friend was in so much pain that the axe was the swiftest way to end his suffering. Inspired, Derek asks Meredith for the metaphorical axe to the head: If she doesn't see a future for them, she needs to put him out of his misery.

Burke tries out his vows in surgery — "I am not optimistic; I am not hopeful. I am sure." — and Addison jokingly tells him to dump Cristina and marry her instead. Callie tells George all she can think about is having a baby, and they start trying right there in the on call room. And it turns in to a very good day for Callie, because Bailey checks the board for the chief resident announcement and it's Calliope Torres, M.D. Izzie, oblivious to all of this, goes to George and tells him that if he really wants to be with Callie, she'll support him, but she's in love with him, and she needs him to know that — "and I hope you're in love with me, too."

Meanwhile, Jane Doe/Ava/Rebecca's husband, Jeff, shows up, but Rebecca mostly looks bored. Just before Alex is going to leave for the wedding, Rebecca tells him that she's been discharged; Alex isn't taking the bait, so she spells out that she's looking for Alex to give her a reason not to go. Alex tells her Jeff is a decent guy and she should stay with him.

Minutes before the wedding, the interns get their test scores, and George doesn’t pass. Burke essentially congratulates Derek on being chief, but Derek says he didn’t get the offer. Alex flirts with Addison, and she says he wants Ava/Rebecca and not her — but when he goes back (which I wish he wouldn’t have) he finds an empty room. George, meanwhile, asks Bailey what to do next, and she tells him he can either leave or repeat his intern year. "Did I fail you, George?" she asks, and he responds that he failed her.

Cristina is about to go down the aisle when she realizes that her vows are gone; she freaks out and Burke ends up walking up the aisle to find her. Meredith calms her down, and Cristina says she didn't want the wedding before, but now she thinks she does; Burke says he wants her to know, and he leaves. I know I said before that I'd be done if Burke left her at the altar, but it actually worked for me. Meredith, meanwhile, tells everyone in the church that it's over.

Cristina's standing in her dress in the apartment when Meredith walks in. Cristina says Burke is gone — his trumpet is gone, and his CDs, and his lucky scrub cap. She asks Meredith to get the choker and the dress off her while she sobs “he’s gone! I’m free … dammit.”

George is cleaning out his locker when the new group of interns comes in. Among them: the girl from the bar. She asks George for advice; he tells her to learn how to do an appendectomy before the first day. She then introduces herself as Lexie Grey.

In the end, we see the final scene with the chief and Derek, and Derek tells Richard he's not the best man for the job — Richard is. Wouldn't he do it differently if he could have another chance?

So that's our season. I love the introduction of Lexie. Does she even know about Meredith? I can't imagine why Thatcher wouldn't have steered her away from Seattle Grace, but Lexie seems like the kind of girl who gets what she wants, kind of a brighter, shiner, happier version of Meredith. There's something a little too perfect in Lexie also meeting Derek in a bar the night before she starts her internship at Seattle Grace, but I like what it could do for the story, so I'll take it. I can't imagine Richard will come back as chief, honestly, now that he's somewhat reconciled with Adele; doesn't this just put him in the same position he was before, choosing his job over his family? And I'm not sure I see George leaving, either; if he repeated his intern year, it would be a way to integrate Lexie's class of interns in with the existing group. Burke, too, doesn't really feel gone, yet, and I want to hear the chief tell Bailey why he passed her over. I'm ready to leave this rollercoaster season behind, but I'm hopeful about the setup we've been given for season four. What do you think?

I think on its on, it was a good episode. But the problem is that if you read the writers blog, they say they're taking the characters in one direction and then in the next episode the characters do something completely different. There was no consistency. Like, Meredith's near death experience. That was supposed to change her for the good, and instead she had like, one happy day and then went back to being selfish self-centered Meredith. (Which I never noticed before until I started watching old episodes and so much of her conversations with Cristina and friends begin with "Do you know what happened to ME today?" And then blah blah blah when the other character really had a lot more going on. It's just...irritating.

I was pleased with the finale but sad that all bad things happened and no happy cliffhangers.

Also if they have Lexie hook up with Derek they might as well start showing Grey's Anatomy in the afternoon along with the other daytime soaps... Oh. AND. AND!!! (I'm sorry can you tell this episode has put me in a rage?) When we had to sit through that stupid 2 hour more Private Practice than Greys nonsense, Shonda wrote a blog saying that it was NOT a spinoff idea and basically saying the media blew everything out of proportion because it was just a continuation of Addisons story. Which kind of didnt make sense because Addison's story was Derek and cheating on him so....basically, she was full of CR*P. And it makes me think the rest of her promises for the show are similarly full of it.

Can I just say that I called it when the mysterious girl in the bar met Dereck? I just KNEW it had to be Lexie--and what about the similarities between how Mer and Der met, and Lexie's encounter with him at the bar? Wow, it's been an interesting ride. How on earth did George fail his intern exam?
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Yeah I have to agree with you, I dont like Shonda. She is full of hot air. Also, there was so much buzz over Izzies daughter and now nothing. I mean, Izzie had to give bone marrow to the kid, and now theres no mention of her at all!?
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Yeah I swear when they work in this Lexie angle they better be careful not to have the same storyline as how Mer met Dereck. Dont go there! Also, how unfair for George to have failed but Mer got to retake the test. I felt jealous for him when he learned he had failed. I suppose he was off in lalaland thinking of how he is in love with Izzie and thats why he failed. BARF. They just should not be together.

I was satisfied with last night's finale (maybe I'm just glad this season is over) and the cliffhangers leading into the next. So many possibilities are opened up. Like you, Buzz, I'm hopeful for season four. smarler and CM213: You are brilliant! Adding Lexie to the mix should be interesting, as long as the show doesn't take any more of a soap opera turn than it already has. I, too, want to hear the Chief's explanation to Bailey. Maybe he holds her to a higher standard just as he does Burke. As always, Buzz, great recap!

I looooved this show. I think it brought back old stuff that has been hanging and although it left new questions, it resolved old ones. Last week I said I KNEW that christina and burke wouldnt be married, and waa laa. Im not sure how much I like the whole way that Derek through his "love" at Merideth after slamming her down with "I met a girl" thing. Also, she would not have just been like I have to go, Christina needs to walk down that isle. She is way to selfish for that. Great epy and I cant wait to see what happens!
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Crispet, I agree with you--Meredith retook the test (okay, I know her Susan Mom had just died and she got told off by Thatcher the same day, so I get it), but it seems a little unfair that it's the one-time thing for everyone else. And I have to ask, since I'm not medically-minded at all, does anyone know if this is the real way it's done? Because Alex even got to retake his medical board exams, but this one test requires a full new intern year?

Ugh, I am just so annoyed with this Lexie Grey character. They better not make her out to "bed" Derek in some bizarro competition to best Meredith. EVERYONE knows Mere and Derek belong together, its just the constant "cant get it together" thing that drives me NUTS! Christina's reaction to Burkes cancelling of the wedding was amazing, I was bawling my eyes out-- yet oddly happy for her?? Strange.

i thought sandra oh did an amazing job last night. that final scene in burke's apartment was heart wrenching. and to be on tv w/ no eyebrows, looking like whoopi? wow. meredith is so annoying. she thinks she can have her tantrums and blow off/want derek whenever she feels like it. so selfish. and don't even get me started on izzie!! don't even get me started! (molly shannon as jeannie darcy)

Aside from many things that bothered me about this show, what I resent most is the was Shonda Rhimes has chipped away at my regard for so many once-great characters. I used to really like and feel for George, but he is now hardened to a real degree (that's OK, I guess, after all he's been thru) but he's also been behaving imorally, which is not something George would do. It's just not. Yes, he's "struggling" about the Izzy thing, but I don't buy it. He doesn't love Callie, never has. The baby is an attempt for both of them at trying to make their weak marriage work. And Callie. She was so strong and admirable and sexy. The Callie we first knew would have kicked Izzy's arse by now. And George's. (Because she KNOWS, folks, she KNOWS!) I hate Meredith most of all. She doesn't deserve Derek. The way she's treated him is shameful. Yet, somehow, she's the soul thru which we're supposed to view this world. She's weak, whiny and cruel. I never liked her and never found her attractive, but at least I didn't want to slap the tequila outta her mouth before. Cristina and Burke not getting hitched was too predictable. Shonda seems to hate marriage and married people. I've never been married, but not all marriages are so effed up as on this show. Finally, she may be letting Richard's marriage work out -- which is amazing, considering it would be the only dang one on Grey's. Even Ava's/Rebecca's marriage had to be tragic, and we barely know her. Shonda--I beg you--get some therapy, honey!

Yeah I also find it illogical that George would have to repeat his intern year. But Buzz makes the point that this would help integrate the new interns (namely Lexie) into the plot. And Sandra did a great job. I thought it was beautiful how she ended up really being ready to marry Burke through mentioning all the items that were most important to him being gone.
- 5 years ago Report Comment
I have nothing profound to say as I am still kind of confused, BUT I must say I was mesmerized by Cristina's lack of eyebrows. It looked like they applied makeup and digitally blurred that area out, or something. It was so strange. For some reason, I felt the most interested in Richard's story. I guess because I always feel strangely bad for him.

i thought the best scene was with mer & christina. it broke my heart to see yang list all the things that were missing. she really did care.
This episode just made me cry at the end. I felt so badly for Cristina. I'm bummed that season ended on such a sad note.

ps. my guess at the Chief's explanation to Bailey would be her family. he's always on her about going home. callie doesn't have kids... yet.

All I wanted out of the finale was to see Callie get to punch Izzie and George out, but I was sorely disappointed. Oh well, there is always next season. ;)

I am extremely disappointed with the way things turned out last night. I really loved Burke and Cristina and I am saddened that they are no longer together. I also am really pissed at the fact that all season the Chief has all but come out and told Miranda that she was going to be Chief resident and then he goes and gives it to Callie. I am very excited about the Lexie story line and the path that George will choose to take.
I was really hoping Miranda would make chief. She is a little firecracker. But with everything that happened with the interns - I am not sure the Chief would pick her. Second I don't see how Meredith could give up on McDreamy like that. But I see over the years she likes being told how her life will be. So she is not use to making choices when it comes to relationships. I think it is easier for her to have someone breakup with her so she can blame it on them. I wonder if he will date Lexi just to spite her. And I was kinda lost on the whole wedding thing. Why was it called off? Because Christina turned into someone else? But she was doing it because of the pressure from him and her family. He forced the big wedding on her! And finally, I want to smack Izzie. She is only thinking of herself. Every time she sees George she is a mad puppy dog. He is married. Let it go! Callie is a good person, does she not see that?

I was really upset about the finale as well. EVERYTHING, except the chief’s marriage went wrong. I hated the fact that they showed us the beautiful vows that Burke made for Christina (which totally made me cry) and then all of the sudden he “leaves” her at the altar. I mean, I understand the whole Christina was changing for him and loosing herself thing, but come on. They have been so great together the last couple of episodes, and they have gone through so much. I just hated the way it ended. And I HATE the fact that George did not pass the exam. I mean, isn’t he going through enough already?? And this new Lexi character? I really hope they don’t involve her romantically with Derek. That would totally ruin McDreamy for me. They have already ruined George’s character…and in some way also Meredith. I mean she goes through a life changing experience and her life is still the same.... I am disappointed at the finale. I hope they make it up next season.

As an episode, it was one of the better ones this season. It was the first episode since November where I alternately laughed and cried and totally immersed myself in the show. It started losing my interest with the first ferry episode, but now I'm hooked for next season. I don't want anyone to leave, but if I had to bet, I think Isaiah Washington is gone. All the crap off-screen seems to have taken over that show and the writing and acting have suffered alot since then - his departure might lead to a happier set, therefore bringing back better shows!

I'm mad at izzie for not leaving him alone. But i'm also mad at george. YOU DB! Make your boundaries WELL KNOWN! Apparently she's dense. Make it clearer. I think everyone knows they slept together and that Izzie is in love with him. Cristina....sniffle. Meredit.... you hateful so and so. Burke... sniffle. Derek don't let her do it. FIGHT! Bailey... I BELIEVE IN YOU! Callie poor woman. But congrats. I can't believe that he gave it to her though.

OMG I HATED THIS FINALE. Not everyone had to break up. and poor george. he didn't necesarily fail his exam, but he didn't get above the bottom 5 scores. I thought it was touching that bailey was so upset like she failed him, and how strong he was. he must have known he didn't do that well. and also, i am psised they are going to brin in lexie to take derrick from meredith. i mean she obvi loves him but can't get over all the untrusting men in her life to deal with it, but having her sister come in for the kill? Christina did a good job acting though. i was bawling by the time the show was over. i called my mom to discuss and she was 10 minutes from the end and said: don't cry i don't want to know ahead of time and hung up on me lol. then she called me back and we cried together haha.

If Lexie is Meredith's half-sister, what was she doing at the bar alone around the time of her mother's funeral?
- 5 years ago Report Comment
It was an awesome episode for me... I laughed and cry! I was :jawdrop: when Burke called the wedding off I certainly didn't see it coming... As far as Meredith and Derek I wasn't surprise at all b/c she's such a waist of time (while all this was happening I was shouting I would do anything you ask my to Derek :-D) She doesn't deserve him at all b/c she's a very insecure person with tooo many problems in her head! I hope everything works out with Callie and George. As far as Izzie she deserves to be alone for getting involve with someone else's husband... I was heartbroken when Dr. Bailey didn't get the Chief Position that I almost cry (well I did) I can't wait to see that season 4 has in stores for us!

jason, we were just talking about that, and I concluded that maybe Lexie deals with difficult things the same way Meredith does (i.e. getting drunk and picking up random men). Someone pointed out that she *was* wearing all black in the bar ...

I really enjoyed this finale, they left me wanting to watch next season which is great. I gotta say that George failing his exam truly bummed me out, he didn't deserve it. i don't understand why people hate the Izzy/George storyline. we all know George is not in love with Callie, Hes just making things worst for them, plus Callie deserves so much better. I'm sad to see Addison leave. Her character really grew in the last two seasons so its sad to see her go, i was a fan of the Addison/Alex storyline... oh well I don't get Meredith's and Derek's relationship. Meredith tells him she wants him to sleep over one minute and then the next minute she doesn't know if she wants to be with him, i think I'm one of the few that likes Meredith, i am looking forward to see her grow next season. I hope her character grows Burk and Cristina, i knew they weren't going to get married. I never liked burk, he was was way too intense for me and it was always his way or else he would get pissed off and thrwo a fit. i gotta say that his wedding vows were really beautiful. Sandra did an excellent job at the end of the eppy

I still wanted Alex and Addison. Oh well. Poor Dr. Bailey! She is the only character I love unconditionally. And Callie seems like such an odd choice - is she that much older than George? - but I guess this is an attempt to keep her character on the show (or make it more dramatic when she does go). I don't know - I can't predict this show, so I am done trying (until next season, I guess). I will say though, this episode made me fall in love with Sandra Oh. She is such a great actress. Love her.
- 5 years ago Report Comment
It all feels very soap opera to me. There is a fine line between clever drama and soap opera. I think they have already crossed it. Most of it was fairly predictable. I think the only thing I am really disappointed with is Alex not making it to Ava/Rebecca on time.
- 5 years ago Report Comment
I think Callie and George really could have worked, the writers just 180'd the storyline on everyone. I mean seriously we are supposed to believe Izzy was just completely broken about Denny and now she's totally head over heels in love with George. Like I said it's very soap opera. If you want a show to really last you have to branch out the main characters a bit.
- 5 years ago Report Comment
I had heard that Burke was going to leave Cristina at the alter, so to speak, but didn't believe it 'til I saw it. If one person has to go, I'd rather it be Burke; I like George. I also hope the Ava storyline is over, though I don't figure it is. Nothing ever seems over on this show. But these falling in love with the patient storylines seem so far-fetched to me! All in all, I loved the episode though.
- 5 years ago Report Comment
I dont know why everyone is assuming Lexie will hook up with/go after Derek. Their meeting in the bar was basically staged for two reasons: 1. So Derek and Meredith could have yet *another* conflict and 2. to introduce a new character. I honestly don't think the writers would be that lame to throw the Derek and Lexie together. There is the possibility the Lexie will be the one to help Meredith turn things around..

I find everyone's different takes on the characters fascinating. In many cases, my mom and I seem to be at the complete other end of the spectrum when we watch. In recent episodes, I have found nothing likeable about Izzy. If any character on the show is selfish, its her. He's married, suck it up and move on. As for the Meredith-Derek storyline recently, last night my mom and I were both encouraging Merdith to break up with Derek early in the episode. We both thought he was being the jerk, not her. I guess I just see her as someone who life keeps crapping all over, and everytime things start to turn around, she gets crapped on again. Add her cynicism to her obvious abandonment issues, and I find most of her behavior understandable. As for Derek, I think he's been a bit selfish himself. He seems to expect her to react to problems the way he does, which isn't fair. And when she doesn't, he just walks away and acts disappointed in her. I get that he's trying, but I think they're equally at fault in any relationship issues they're having. Anyway, just my take on things. Loved parts of the finale, could've done without others. Overall, a pretty good end to the season.

I have to say that I kind of knew that Burke and Christina were not going to go through with the wedding, so that didn't surprise me. Also, I know some might hate me for saying this, but I am so over the whole Meredith and Derek story line, they need to just break up and get on with thier lives. Also, the whole George, Izzie, and Callie story line just doesn't seem right. I liked George and Callie together and didn't see the point of messing it all up by throwing Izzie in the mix.

Also, I heard that some people expected Richard to make Bailey Chief, or think that he will next season to make up for her not getting Chief Resident....except...it's not possible. Bailey is only a resident and you have to be an attending to be made chief...right?
- 5 years ago Report Comment
HA! i too was appalled at the cutting of the wedding dress. But it seemed a likely thing for Meredith to do. She just kind of cuts things, people, etc. out of her life in decisive ways. I agree with those who are disappointed in these formerly "great" characters. But truly, they are so reflective of real life. We meet people with whom we spend a lot of time, and we may regard them one way or another. That always changes though. As we get to know them, we also get to know their flaws, and we see them make mistakes and act selfish. We may get mad and change our minds about them, and not want to be friends anymore. But in my experience, those friends usually come back into my life and I once again see them in a respected light. They are just human, like we all are, and we have to forgive each other. I love the humanity of this show, and the frailty of the characters, and I love when they suddenly see the big picture.

Ugh ugh ugh. I'm so bored of all the ridiculous drama on this show. Can't anyone ever be happy?! I totally agree that Shondra might need a little therapy. And, honestly, can there be at least one non-neurotic, strong woman on this whole show? It used to be Callie, but this whole "bandaid baby" thing with George, and her not confronting Izzy is making me CRAZY. Basically, I'll keep watching next season, but I'm getting sick of ending each episode with an eye-roll and an exclamation of "Oh my god, I hate Meredith."
omg omg omg i was so distraught and upset after the finale! i needed someone to talk to lol. anyways, burke and christina are by far my favorite couple and it crushed my heart to see him leave... he is such a good man and they love each other! why can't they just be together?! his vows were amazing.. made me love him. argh! there were no happy endings!! meredith and derek are never really stable and i can't stand how she didn't make even the slightest effort to hold onto him even after he said she was the love of his life!

Of all the things I yelled at my tv, I yelled, "shut up Izzie" the most. Although I hadn't liked that storyline before, I really hated her last night. Just no. Aside from that, everyone was very effective.

I'm really starting to not like Meredith. Get some counseling already. I'm going to miss Christina and Burke, he was kind of the only thing that made her human. For the first time ever I felt sorry for Alex. Torn of the whole Callie, George, Izzy thing.

This season was just so...yucky. I hate George and Callie together, they started out as a cute couple, but now..total ick factor. I like Izzie, but no way is she over Denny, so why is she so hot after George? All the other story lines were predictable as heck. And, I can so see them putting Lexie and George together romantically...and then what kind of drama is that for Mer and Izzie's relationship, and Callie's. They will all hate Mer as much as the public at large does. No, I don't think I'll be tuning in for that...seriously

I hate Meredith, make up your freaking mind, and the way, at the end that she told the audience at the wedding "it's over" she rudely said "it's so over" under her breath, and I think she was saying that to Derek, which is the only thing she has pretty much, and he's been nothing but 100% charming and sweet, and patient with her. The new interns thing is going to make me mad if they replace key people. George the entire show seemed weird, Izzie is out of control, Callie getting chief?!!! what the heck?!! Out of all of them, the 30 year old?? What about Miranda? So next season, Callie will have a baby, and george will be a stay at home dad? Then the I am free crap by Christina, etc..Grey's has lost it's touch, the writing isn't intellegent. What happend to Izzie's 11 year old daughter? What happend to Meredith almost killing herself, dying and then coming back to life unrealistically. What in the world were they thinking with "Ava" she was annoying, and unrealistic, And the the dreadful spinoff with Addison and telling us it would be a "2 hour greys" It doesn't tie together, it's gotten sloppy and predictable. Burke left on that note, George is leaving most likely, Addison is too, so what's left? And how would Meredith's "sister" not know Meredith was an intern? She was getting to know the girls mom?! Seriously.

this is one frustrating finale. i wanted izzy to just go away and be killed off. she's the biggest drama queen ever. havcing her on the show is not really helping anyone. meredith shouldn't have done that to derek. derek wasn't really the best of guys but he was his very best with her. he did what he could with her but she won't let him. she pushed him away. i hope things are not really "over" with them.. coz that's just messed up. shonda likes playing with everyone's mind and honestly.. she's starting to suck. i can't believe burke left xtina. they were such an awesome couple. the breakdown scene was just brilliant. sandra oh rocked it!

they needed more mark in the episode he was only in like what one or two scenes? the finale was okay i guess, it was sad cristina and burke broke up but if lexie and derek get together that would just seem wrong. What annoys me the most tho is that Rebecca-Ava character, i dunno why..maybe Izzie and Alex should get back together just like old times haha but thats never gonna happen cuz izzie claims to be "in love" with george..as if she completely forgot about denny.. I liked Richard's story the most in the finale, and i hope he stays with adele.

i cant believe that was it. the rest of the season was much better. i am soooo upset about burke and cristina i loved them together and it seems like thats it for burke--hes gone no more burke. and if mcdreamy and lexi fall in love? ughhhh they are just flushing it down the toilet.
