Well, if you think about that title, you might get a basic idea about what goes down on this week's Grey's Anatomy. Derek returns to the hospital to be one link in the giant chain of doctors now trying to save Izzie's life. Meanwhile, Izzie tries adjusting to being a patient instead of a doctor, some disturbing things happen with Owen, and George . . . has a couple of lines. Ready to chat? Just read more.
Let's talk about Derek's Elevator o' Love, wallpapered with brain scans of patients whose lives he and Meredith have saved together. It's his grand gesture, his giant candle house in the woods. And, like the candle house was for Meredith, this is Derek's way of communicating that he's OK. Meredith doesn't have to worry about him wasting his talent on drinking and can batting in the woods; he's going to be fine. And with that, he doesn't need to ask a question; he simply tells her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. It's not the proposal I was expecting from Derek, but I actually like it better than a room full of roses and candles.
They're engaged, but they're not celebrating — at least not right away — because they both have some work to do helping Owen and Cristina. Speaking of things I wasn't expecting: I knew the writers had been building up to something with Owen's PTSD, but strangling Cristina during a nightmare? That's big. And Cristina wants to pretend it's not. She wants it to be OK, even if that means she's wearing a turtleneck under her scrubs, even if her friends are standing guard to keep Owen away. Owen is terrified he'll really hurt her, but Cristina says again that she'll decide how much she can handle. And later in the episode, she does: After television's longest sex scene (I mean . . . they're good-looking folks, but that was a while), she tells him she's afraid to fall asleep. That's how postengagement Meredith ends up crawling into bed with Cristina; that's why Derek stays at the hospital to get a scan of Owen's brain. It took a while, but Owen finally realizes he needs help.
Meanwhile, Izzie Stevens is still alive — no thanks, as Bailey says, to the friends who didn't bother to visit her. Yeah, Izzie told them to go save lives; sure, she has her knitting. But guys, she's having brain surgery. At least stop by? Bailey won't let Izzie down, though, even quizzing her on surgical skills in between medical procedures — probably the vote of confidence Izzie needed, especially when her new oncologist is so brutally honest (and sometimes downright negative) about the whole endeavor. Callie won't visit because she feels bad about wishing Izzie dead; George won't visit because Izzie didn't tell him first and because he really doesn't want to lose his best friend. But the saddest story of all is Alex's. He's so used to crazy girlfriends that he didn't even contemplate that something could be seriously wrong with Iz. And now he's conceiving lab babies and wondering if he and Izzie have gotten together just in time for her to die. Karev is still Karev, though: His first line post surgery — well, after "I'm here" — is about his cup of "swimmers." Nice.
Some other thoughts:
- Now every time I see Owen, I'm looking out for helicopter noises. Was there always that "whap-whap-whap" in the room with the hot vent?
- "People are better than no people" is such a classic Grey's line, and I loved the old woman who just wouldn't die.
- Also love Karev delivering his cup to the Chief in the middle of lunch. "I'm eating here, Karev." "I washed my hands."
- How cute was Bailey wearing Izzie's scarf?
So Izzie's through surgery one, but she's got of fighting left to do. So does Owen, if he wants Cristina back. And do you think we'll see a Mer-Der wedding before the end of the season, or can they stretch that out another year?

- I hadn't noticed the helicopter sounds in the vent room either, nor had I noticed the fan-blade-like shadows on the wall. And you're right, that was a loooong sex scene. I was almost tempted to fast-forward after a while.
- I loved Derek's proposal. I feel like it was very him & Meredith, and she's growing on me more and she gets more stable and less whiny.
- Alex's scene in the room with Meredith was so heartbreaking, but at the same time he had some of the funniest scenes of the night too. When the Chief knocked on the door to see how things were "coming" and then caught himself just in time, I cracked up.
- I'm so glad Iz made it through!
1i wonder if the wedding is going to be izzy and alex? maybe she will suggest it so alex doesnt have to go through what izzy went through with denny (obviously if she dies alex will go through hell but at least they would have been married even if for a short time).
2One thing... can we just talk about how there were no previews? Now that I'm falling back in love with Grey's, how long do we have to wait before another new episode?!
3First of all, I still looove Owen and Cristina. I hope he gets his issues sorted out soon because I want them together like now.
Poor Alex. Finally realizing what Izzie's hallucinations about Denny meant, and that he could've seen it sooner... aww. Also, I really hope we get some Izzie/Alex babies.
tehe.
Grey's is really picking up again. I'm glad.
4melly the next episode is april 23rd.
5Ugh we have to wait that long? It's finally getting good again. What has been going on with the shows this season? Everything has been going on hiatus for weeks at a time.
6KJ1185 — networks always try to put on new episodes around sweeps in November, February, and May, but this year, the February period was technically pushed to March. So we maybe got more new episodes than usual in March, but now we have to wait longer for things to start again. It's frustrating!
7I thought this episode was really good. I REALLY love Christina and Owen. I like that she's not scared of dealing with his problems (because they are really real and so many real life people can't handle and deal with it). I thought it was really a realistic portrayal. I'm glad he's getting help.
I couldn't stand Izzie for the longest time and these last two episodes reminded me why I liked her in the beginning. I love that the original core group is being brought back together because of this.
The Derek/Meredith proposal was perfect. I laughed when the chief wouldn't let her get on the elevator. I'm happy he got his chance to help with the proposal!
8April 23rd?!?!?! Stupid networks.
9I know that TV shows arent supposed to be realistic, but they would have SHAVED Izzies head for that surgery. (I work in hospitals) That bothers me, I dont know why.
10i started to cry when alex did. as annoying as izzy is, i started liking her again and i really do think alex and izzy should be together.
11Yeah, I hate how we have to wait for forever for new episodes, I think all shows are taking a month off, which means re-runs and reality shows... ugh. The episode was good. I loved Derek's proposal. I like Owen and Christina together, but I was pretty freaked out about how intense it got. I'm glad Izzie made it through the first surgery, but that cancer surgeon/doctor drove me insane questioning Derek's abilities. Of course she should doubt him since he took off for a couple of weeks, but her tone was annoying. I love that Alex got a ton of airtime this episode, his scenes with the Chief were funny, and he was so sweet at the end.
12did they actually play the stars in this episode?
13CaterpillarGirl — that drove me nuts too! I was like, nice that she had a procedure that let her keep all her hair. (Though I guess we never saw the back ... but I figure they'd have shaved it all or at least bandaged her up like they did for Jennifer Westfeldt's character a couple of weeks back.) Also, I'll be curious to see if she loses it for chemo.
14that scene with owen and christina was more raunchy than the show has really thought to go in the past .
i loved the dancing scene with arizona though - she's really funny -and to see the 2 ladies finally getting along and being in the dating thing that was building up for so long - that's just a good thing.
15Buzz maybe they will write it in...a cute gesture from one of the characters to bring her a wig or something?
Loved the elevator proposal
And loved Christina and Owen, it felt very real and
raw...especially the way it was shot right in the beginning when she was running to the bathroom...
16I myself am sick of any dancing scene on this show. Yes people dance but its not good tv anymore. its old.
17loved this episode!! three good ones in a row...
am i the only one that was surprised and a little disappointed that derek didn't get on one knee or even ask meredith to marry him????
also, really hoping that izzie makes it through this. i can't handle watching alex and derek go through that heartbreak
18also, forgot to say that i am really impressed with the way this show is addressing PTSD. very important issue!
19Blondie - I'm with you! I think I actually yelled at the TV when he said he wasn't getting down on one knee. I get why he didn't, but I really wanted him to and I think it's such a sweet/gallant type thing. Maybe it's just not their character, but I wanted to see it.
20I'm with CaterpillarGirl on the dancing. I'm getting sick of it.
21I actually thought Derek's proposal was incredibly romantic! He remembered, in vivid detail, every moment that made Meredith amazing, and showed her precisely why he admires and adores her.
I cried through most of this episode, I think.
22@CaterpillarGirl : I remember trying to entice my mother into watching Grey's Anatomy when it first started ("Mom ! There are good looking guys in there ! And it's in a HOSPITAL ! You're a doctor, you should relate to it !) and she watched the first episode with me. When it came to the scene when Shepherd - neurosurgeon - shaves his patient, she burst out in laughter and said "Yeah, like a SURGEON is gonna do that himself !". And after that, she couldn't watch the 2nd episode because she told me all the inaccuracies would drive her crazy...
About this week's episode : I've never really liked Alex, but he's growing on me because he shows some human emotions. I've always liked Izzie, so no change here. I just feel very compassionate for her and hope she will pull through (YES, I know she's fictional).
I actually relate to the story of the family who seems very detached at first by the potential death of their mother because they've been there for so many times their pain doesn't seem present anymore. I recently haunted hospitals because my grandmother was dying of cancer and seriously, at first, you take the news hard and then, you toughen up. You have to because time passes, the situation worsens very slowly and you still have to show up everyday. You can't be a wreck everyday. It would be too hard.
Cancer became my best friend, seriously. I could talk about it and "it affecting my grandmother" as if I talked about the weather or traffic. The only way to survive this.
23Tulipe - You're very strong... I don't know if I could do that.
24Well, I didn't really think about it before having to do it. You know, we are strong people and we can find resources to fight even though we didn't know we had these resources in ourselves. I won't lie and say it was a piece of cake. She died and I wouldn't wish the same experience to my worst enemy. I'm just saying you'd be surprised at the things you CAN do without knowing you can do them...
25i thought owen was going to get triggered by those shadows and attack cristina & then there would be no one there to snap him out of it, thank goodness it didn't happen though
i really hate that izzie's oncologist is so blunt and honest, if my oncologist were like that i'd be looking for a new one (thank god he isn't though!) & i really hated her popping in the surgery and just questioning derek's moves. she's meant to be smart right? cause her actions definitely weren't.
26Tulipe, I agree with you about Izzie...I love her character and hope she makes it too
27That was some scene with Owen and Christina. Lucky Sandra Oh!
28I want to keep watching! I am so upset that we have to wait!
29it's nice for alex to finally have CHARACTER. he was always so boring to me, but with this storyline, he's been the one that gets the most emotion out of you. actually, ever since denny's ghost has been gone, the whole storyline has been making me teary-eyed. i'm surprised no one tried to rationalize with george on why she didn't come to him to talk about what was going on. sometimes it's just easier to talk about your deepest darkest secrets to someone that you aren't quite as close to because you don't want to hurt your best friend or have him disappointed in you.
the scene between meredith and the chief at the elevator was definitely the most amusing part of the episode. so silly and cute.
30I agree that Alex finally has something to do now. I hated the storyline with "ava" or whoever she was (although I love Elizabeth Reaser in Twilight!!!). I am not sure how accurate the PTSD thing is though. I am an army wife and have many friends' husband's dealing with PTSD and I don't think you can diagnose it on a brainscan. Just my two cents.
31Izzie have cancer is totally a way to get viewers to like her again..... but it ain't working for me. I can't stand her and hope her character doesn't make it in the end. I know that sounds bad, but it's not like she's a real person or anything.
32Err, that should say Izzie having
33I love Izzie and hope she makes it. I thought Heigl wanted to leave Grey's, so I thought she would definitely die. But in an interview she gave, she said she wants to stay on Grey's if they want her. I really hope they dont kill her off. Also, we need more George!! I really don't understand why they don't give him more lines.
I did fast-foward through Owen and Christina's sex scene... way too long
34I feel like we are getting back to old Grey's. I did notice the fan in the boiler room. I was actually thinking that when the scene was playing. I'm so happy Derek and Meredith are FINALLY engaged. I hate that Cristina and Owen are in such a difficult place, but I'm glad Owen's character is getting help. PTSD is such a problem for today's vets, just like Grey's having it in the story line. As much as I dislike Izzy, the story line is getting to me.
35I agree with Bethinabox.
36LaurenG22 i agree with you. I was thinking the same thing about Owen getting diagnosed with a brainscan. I was like. Uhhh..i dont think thats how you fix the problem. Its not like he has a tumor or anything that can be surgically fixed. I think he needs too see a therapist.
37Actually, research has shown that adults with PTSD or mood/anxiety disorders exhibit abnormalities in the structure and function of certain parts of the brain. Brain imaging is used not in respect of diagnosis (I think there is no doubt to anyone on the show that Owen has PTSD), rather it is often used to evaluate which treatment may be most effective.
And I'm all for the show getting back to its roots and doing what it does best - interesting medical cases and interesting relationships (romantic and otherwise).
