"Grey's Anatomy" Recap: Episode 16, "Drowning on Dry Land"

Updated 02/22/07 3:00 AM · Posted by BuzzSugar · 72 comments

I can only think of two words to describe this week's episode of "Grey's Anatomy," and I think you "Grey's" fans know what they are: Seriously? Seriously??

On the one hand, this was the most obvious direction the story could have taken. On the other, I'm still not convinced I know where it will end. Spoilers ahead, of course, but we can discuss if you read more

So Meredith dies. Maybe. We're not sure. My instinct is to say she's coming back, because that's what happens on TV. She woke up in a flash of light, sandwiched between Dylan and Denny; it seems like a plot device we've seen since television began.

And yet, maybe she's really dead. Right?

If what comes out of this story line is that Meredith's just fine, and her "death" was only a sweeps-week fakeout, I'm going to be disappointed. "Grey's" doesn't need a stunt; it's a better show than that.

But I don't want to project my (possibly premature) disappointment in the whole story onto this episode, because as pure entertainment, it worked for me. It hit at that slightly giddy place people reach during a tragedy: Izzie giggling after she drills into the guy's skull on the boat; George saying Bailey might change her son's middle name to Tupperware or Elvis if he doesn't find their patient's child. We know something big has happened; we see Derek pull Meredith out of the water, limp and blue. But the other doctors don't know that; they're satisfied with their small victories — Izzie and her drill, Alex and the families, Addison and her Jane Doe. Even Cristina's whining about not being able to find Meredith felt poignant — she doesn't know her "person" (remember that from season one?) is in the water.

The action picks up straight from last week. Izzie is about to give up on the man on the ferry (and, essentially, on herself as a doctor), but she decides it's worth another shot. She phones the Chief, who along with Mark talks her through drilling holes in the man's skull. The Chief takes her off probation, which felt both sudden and expected, but it was good to see tough Izzie back.

Alex hits on an effective, though ghastly, way to help the waiting families get information: He takes Polaroids of the patients in surgery — and later of the ones in the morgue — and asks people to identify anyone they recognize. He's cold and detached until he finds the man he thinks is the husband of the Jane Doe he saved; he really wants that story to have a happy ending. Addison, meanwhile, seems to be realizing how alone she is, wondering aloud if anyone would notice if she disappeared — and Alex ultimately says he would.

George tells his patient he's found her son, which is a total lie. Bailey yells at him for again making promises he can't keep, but George says if his lie saves the woman's life, he doesn't mind. In the end, he learns the boy has been in surgery with Callie the whole time.

And then there's Derek. The creepy girl points Derek toward the water, and he pulls his "knight in shining whatever" move by diving in and dragging Meredith out. I loved Derek tonight; he looked so broken as he tried to literally breathe life into Mere. And watching all of the other doctors learn what had happened to Meredith was one of the most powerful parts of the episode — they go from celebrating the lives they’ve saved to crashing in the most spectacular way.

There are some small moments from the end of the episode that will stick with me: Derek getting kicked out of Meredith's room; Addison urgently trying to save the woman who broke up her marriage; Mark squeezing Derek's arm. It didn't matter who'd ruined whose relationship or who was going to be chief; bigger things were happening.

The vulnerable Cristina will stick with me, too; she really wanted to believe there had been a mistake and Meredith was fine, which is the sort of thinking she usually ridicules. I loved Izzie saying that believing in survival is what makes us survive — but her speech lost me when she told George he'd made a mistake in marrying Callie. I think she was having a "life's too short" moment and wanted to make her feelings known. It's in character for Izzie to not realize the timing wasn’t right, but her insensitivity took me out of the moment.

And the moment matters, because while Derek waits in the hall, Meredith's heart starts to fail. And though she seems to be technically still alive, she snaps awake on a cot between Dylan and Denny, who inform her that she is, indeed, dead.

Or is she? Is it a fantasy, a dream, an alternate reality? Could it be real? Your theories, please.

Great recap. I think Mer went towards the bright lights only for a second, to chat with Denny and Dylan, and then in the nick of time she will be back to pumping blood through her body.
Meredith - not dead. she'll come back to life spiritually enlightened. I find it difficult to believe her rescue, though. Perhaps I should get over it, but the whole show spanned many minutes and if Mer couldn't swim and was, as the show showed, drowning and falling deeper into the water, how in the heck could Derek have gone in the water (if i was so cold, how come he wasn't affected and i'm just assuming the water was so cold that it sent Mer into a shock and THAT'S why she couldn't tread water back to shore) and found Meredith without any diving equipment? Okay. Whatever. Cristina - I don't find her charming. Just annoying. She was a little too selfish for me and that seems to be her only character point as of late. "No, George, I can't help you find the missing boy because I need to know where Meredith is so I can tell her about my engagement that I may or may not be excited about." Izzie - Stops speaking NOW. I hate her speeches and her "I know everything in the world I am the voice of reason and knowledge" spiels. Who talks like that? I didn't even care that she called out George. Maybe George needs to be called out for sometimes acting like a little boy (i.e. not being professional with his wife at work). George - see above Yeah, those are all the characters and plot lines that I dislike so far. Blah.
I was so happy to see Denny, I had heard he was coming back, but I just thought that it was going to be through Izzy's dreams, or something. I really don't think that Mer is dead, that would just be weird, but I do like how that made it look like she dies (unless she really is, but I don't think so). I was kind of upset when Izzy was telling George how he made a mistake about Callie, I just thought that that was a little mean. On the other hand I thought that she really was a "rockstar" (as she put it so cutely) with the drill!! I am torn.... I also must say that I was really impressed with Alex, he really stepped up with posting the pics. While I don't think anyone wants to see a pic of their dead loved one, I think that that was the only way to deal with that. Way to step up Alex!! I'm very excited for next week!! :)
I have a feeling Meredith might be actually dead, but I'm really hoping she's not. Did anyone else cry seeing Derek so sad? Just me? I thought so.

Ok, so I am on the dividing line here. First I think, they can't kill Meredith off. She's the center of the show. It's freaking called "Grey's" Anatomy. But then I think, well, that was the name of the book that taught all of the interns int he show. It was the book her mother wrote. And it wouldn't be like she never happened. They would probably do something like what they did with the Denny memorial and her "spirit" would stay forever with the show. Personally, I am hoping that it is a sweeps week ploy, because if not, there's only going to be more sad, sad episodes. I like the show because it's witty, charming, and daring. But if the daring goes too far and loses the witty and charming aspect along the way and just ends up sad, then that would just be...sad. And personally, I have a love hate relationship with Meredith. I hate to love her...but I do.

I just don't see how they could kill off Mer. the show is called GREY'S after all. why the hell did Izzy say that to George? I love her & all but I'd smack her if I were George (how is a fictional character, but whatever)

LaLa-Yeah I was pissed that Derek MAGICALLY found Mer in the water, especially since devil child over there pointed far out to sea. So its like, how in the heck would he know where to start looking? Even if he could magically see in the water, which you know is dirty because all the ships come to port there, the water would be cold and he couldnt have enough energy to swim all over tarnation trying to dive down and find Mer. I mean, since she became hypothermic and is on the brink of death, I totally hate that he gallantly carried her out of the water. Wasnt he pale, out of breath, tired? NO, he jauntily runs up with her in his arms. HELLO, NOT POSSIBLE. Also, as a point of clarification to a point someone made above, I dont think Mer 'drowned,' I think she made a choice to let herself sink in the water. Right after her monologue about her choice to disappear and how she had so many things left to say or whatever. LAME. You dont let yourself sink to your death. Flail your arms, scream for help. All she did was blindly stare towards the chaos on land.

As much as I want Meredith to die and take Addison with her, it's gonna happen.
Ya about the textbook they teach in med school, "Grey's Anatomy", I was thinking about that this morning at the gym. I head these guys gushing about last night's episode, which made me giggle because I was thinking about "why if I ever heard my boyfriend gush about Grey's like this" heehee. One guy was saying how they can't kill Mer because that is the name of the show, and then the textbook name hit me, that is a good point! Still I don't think they'll kill her, I don't want them to as annoying as she can be sometimes. What Izzie said to George just bothers me so much, so much so that I'm stating that again.

you nailed it. my heart broke for derrek and i completely agree with the izzy monologue. what she said to george was too abrupt / awkward. i love your grey recaps!

I think she'll pull through.

I agree, Sashak. Izzy shocked me with that comment. Do you think she has feelings for George? I thought at first it was just jealousy because she couldnt marry Denny but there has to be more to it. I love Callie - I want it to work out with her and George. Meredith will be back, either in some parallel universe, haunting the hospital, or she wont actually die. I am leaning toward the second option (there is that third episode in the trilogy), but I have been way wrong on my predictions thus far, so I dont really know.

I agree that Izzy was way off telling George he made a mistake, and being VERY clear he knew that. So not the time... And I dont think it was a mistake, a bit premature, but a horrible mistake--not so much. I do not agree that Izzy likes George. I think she is just concerned about him, as best friends are. If she liked him, should would reiterate that they are best friends, shed try another angle.

I didnt think the possibility of Mer dying would bother me so much, but last night it did! and seeing my McDreamy crying and then McSteamy sitting next to me....best scene in the whole episode! and with every episode i start to like the idea of Adison & alex more and more!! It was nice for a change to see Izzie in an uplifting mood, even though her speech annoyed me! Still my fav! and thank goodness Georgie found the little boy! 'Callie O'Mally'-I dont think that will ever get old!

OMG I was just thinking. Was Meredith basically trying to drown herself in the tub foreshadowing for what happened last night?
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Yeah, Id call that foreshadowing!

Grey's better be careful or they are going to jump the shark. Killing of Meredith would be a terrible idea. I am really curious to see where they go with this. While I love Izzy's character, her rant in last night's episode was good until she turned on George. That was ridiculous. No one would bring that up in that moment. No one.
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Yiddidea - I totally agree! Were you reading my mind! I think they already jumped the shark with the whole Mer even possibly dying. I was thinking that reading through the posts and then I saw yours! And loved the speech until the George/Callie comment!
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Oh - Love George - Callie O'Malley - when you get home tonight... LOL I really like George and Callie together. I hope they prove Izzy wrong. Her whole comment two weeks ago about the small diamond - is a direct smack at George and now this speech about them being a mistake! She sounds like a witch talking to George lately!
- 5 years ago Report Comment
I thought the comment was completely hilarious (mean, yes of course), but very entertaining. If you think about it, why would she want some huge honkin ring anyways? To prove to the world that shes a doctor and so is her husband and they have money? No, shes more down to earth than that. Plus, if youre in surgery all the time, you will either be leaving the ring at home a mighty lot, or it will just be too cumbersome. Thats probably another reason why Cristina have Burke the ring back. Yeah, shes not girly, but surgeons dont need bulky jewelry getting in the way. So, I think Callies ring is just perfect!

I am guessing that they are going to drag out Meredith's "death" for awhile...and then somehow bring her back to life. But, if she isn't dead...then will SOMEONE else die? I mean, we were told someone dies. Just watch, grey will come back to life and then someone else will get run over over in the parking lot. I hate that. I'm sorry but Izzie's speech was ANNOYING. I think she's cute but her voice is stupid when she goes on her little speeches and repeats everything to herself. Not cute. Any why does she have to be so mean to George? What is wrong with Callie O'Malley? Nonetheless, I couldn't help but cry at the end. haha...anyone else cry?

I half want Mer to die because I CAN NOT stomach Ellen Pompeo. But if she got killed off, I would def miss Mers character.
Hey speedbump, someone else dies, because they have been saying someone dies within the 3 episodes. I have heard many rumors and won't say anything here because some people might not want to know. If you really want to know you can send me a message and I'll let you know what I heard, whether or not it is true I have no clue.

Wonderful recap, Buzz! I, too, am annoyed with Izzie's sniping at George, but I did enjoy her "rockstar" moment. Mark and Derek in the hallway and Christina's vulnerability will stick with me too. Until the final minutes, I was struggling to really care about the story lines, but those small moments at the end made the show work for me last night. (Maybe if Mer does die, she will stick around to do the voice overs like those on Desperate Housewives or re-appear like the father did on Six Feet Under. Just a thought.)

Meredith is defiantly going to "see the light" and then come back to life. Hopefully Denny will give her a message for Izzie!

The book is titled "Gray's Anatomy" with an a....not "Grey" with an e.
I don't really care for Meredith, but I don't think the show would be as good without her. But for the record the past few episodes have me hooked; I was waiting for the show to come on like a teenage girl waiting for her date on prom night!

Buzz my mom loves your recaps. Last night she was working and barley paying attention to her shows and I asked her how come she wasnt more into watching and she said, "Oh I'll just read the BuzzSugar recap tomorrow".

I cried when Alex told that guy about his dead wife, not so much with Meredith, because I guess we knew it was coming. I am still so in love with Alex and Addison. All the other couples - Meredith & Derek, Cristina & Burke, Izzy & Denny, even Callie & George - annoy me at some level. I don’t know if I ever want Alex and Addison to actually hook up - I am really enjoying the flirting.

I really just can't stand Meredith or Addison. The fact that Addison slept with MY McSteamy bothers me on so many levels! UGHHH!

What a great episode! I seriously can not believe that anyone would want the Meredith off the show! I really watch primarily for her and Derek (I mean I do love the whole show of course!)-I want him to be a knight in shining armor damn it! It would be nothing without her and Derek. She better come back alive! I also hope Derek is feeling so stupid and regretful about his comment about not wanting to get married the week before (I know she said she didn't either but that was just defensive!). How could Derek tolerate being thrown out of the room! If I were him I would try to stay in there and at least keep touching her hair no matter what the chief said! Izzie's speech was very annoying, very annoying. The whole way the 'friends' have of communicating to each other- one confiding or saying something about themselves followed by the other not responding to what they said, instead saying something about themselves is weird, irritating, overdone, and unnatural. My husband is insisting that I add that he "has heard from some of his friends who know people in Hollywood" that Ellen wants to leave the show to return to the east coast (sorry- he is insistant on adding his two cents, is sitting right here, and is pretty cute!)
Well, I am still in shock from Thursday's episode. I really dont know how Grey's Anatomy would be Grey's Anatomy without Meredith. I would seriously stop watching the show forever. Izzy's speech, though. Irritating, much? Seriously. if she thinks George is her BFF, then she shouldn't say such horrible stuff to his face about him "making a horrible choice marrying Callie." all of the interns were about to discover that Mer was dead? (well, at this point, I have no idea if she is dead or not) As for Addison and Alex-I REALLY REALLY want them to be together, even for a tiny bit. They make the most adorable couple, and when Alex told Addison that he would notice if she dissapeared, it was the cutest thing I have ever heard. I must say I agree with everyone that said Derrick's rescue was annoying/confusing. The water is probably 50 degrees or less, and for him to jump in, swim and find Mer, who, by the way, was probably 20-30 feet under at the time, and then pop back up to surface, barely wet or cold looking, ehh... And even though it hurts to say this, it would be interesting to see what would happen if Mer was killed off. Maybe she will be, and that would be the end of Grey's? I hope not! Buzz-GREAT RECAP :) can't wait for next week!

I hope that George grows a spine and either yells at Izzie in the next episode (in front of everyone, of course) or stops speaking to her for a while. She wants to "protect" him like she's his big sister but even if my big sister spoke to me that way, I'd have to break her nose. I'm predicting that Addison will be the one who ultimately saves Meredith. Then that will add an interesting dynamic in the Meredith/Derek/Addison friendship.

Oh and it was SOOOOO nice to see bomb squad guy again. hehe :)

It was nice to see the bomb squad guy... there's replaying parts one and two of those episodes tonight! I thought Denny's line to Meredith was so creepy though, lol. I'm thinking that, given the title of the epsiode and the title of the show, she'll pull through.

sorry, to bust the bubble of those who are sitting on the edge of their seats but this is SWEEPS month...although her mother is also surnamed Grey, she's too much of a nutter to be a lead character? Who would break Derek's heart like that? So NOPE she can't die...I don't think Ellen would appreciate being unemployed so early in her success. So maybe she might return with no recollection of Derek and their love which would make him pine for her the way SHE pined for him and annoyed many (not me, i felt sorry for her). That would force Christina to lean on Burke. Yet, that's alot of turmoil for everyone and alot of writing in several directions. The writing is awesome, but what made last night's episode was the photography...capturing the actor and moving me to tears even though I KNOW she's not going to die. I feel their pain. Most of all Alex. His concrete exterior is cracking. His humanity escapes for public viewing more and more. The Derek finding her immediately was cheesy, but whatever it's television. I watch it for the fiction of it. Same reason we watch crime dramas solved in an hour. I love this show, and all the flaws. Oh, and yes the Izzie randomness of Callie was weird. Yet, she's weird. So no biggie.
That was such an awesome episode! I cried when I saw Dylan and Denny again.

My man said they jumped the sharks. I said what? He said - "remeber when Fonzie jumped the tank of sharks on Happy Days. You just knew the show had gone too far and it needed to be over." I kinda of feel that way. Too much un realisitic stuff for not to sit there be super incredulous. McDreamy did look so amazing pulling her out of the water.

Does anyone think that everything since last years explosive superbowl episode could be a Merideth dream? Ala Jr Ewing on Dallas? Then she really would not be with Derek, Denny woul dstill be alive, etc? I know it is way out there - but I am obsessed with coming up with possible situations for this neatly tie together! LOL

I really like the idea people have mentioned that Meredith might wake up with amnesia (I don't care how often it has been done on soap opera's ect)it would be great to see Derek pine for her. He def. got off way to easily in the love department for hurting her the way he did. I want serious pining, and (I know it's so pathetic because I keep mentioning it ever post) serious wishes for marriage and babies with her ect. If she has the amnesia I don't want it to go on and on and on though. Def. don't want them to move onto other partners. I wonder though if Meredith getting amnesia is too much with her mother already 'not remembering.' It might be a nice link between them, especially if Ellis is really going to die, but still maybe to much forgetting???????

Missed it on Thursday, finally got to watch it online...OMG! Such a good episode! But we all know that Meredith isn't going to be dead, it IS called "GREY'S Anatomy" after all, but jeez that was an awesome episode, can't wait for next week's
i'm not sure how the show could really continue if meredith dies. but i also don't understand how the writers can retain credibility if they do such a cliche "she dies wait just kidding!" move. i think if she does die the story will have to deal with a lottt of things which could potentially make it interesting. also, i read an interview with the writer or someone and she said she hasn't exactly been following the "rules of tv" with grey's.

I'm a little late on this thread! I think Mer will end up in a coma! Hopefully, this will lead to a few epi's of her in her 'in between' state with Denny (getting words to take back to Izzy) and hot bomb dude. This would provide a some great reactions back on Earth.. maybe once Mer came to she'd be closer with Izzy once she shared news of Denny?! And she'd definitely be ready to commit to a specialty of medicine and more forward with her life.. make her mom proud, yada yada..

well, it's pretty easy. as this week's episode is calles "some kind of miracle" you can figure that meredeith will survive. The last scene with the "dead sandwich" ;-) was a cool misleading trick, though. However: They won't let Meredith die, even though i wished they would as she's way too neurotic and annoying. Just imagine the new developments after meredith's death: mc dreamy and mc steamy could get together. this way the show could finally show how very opne minded they are ;-) well, just a dream i guess - like last week's ending...
