4 Reasons the Flight of the Conchords Movie Needs to Happen

Will the Conchords fly again?

Will the Conchords fly again? According to Bret McKenzie, it just might happen — and this time, on the big screen. The actor recently told The Hollywood Reporter that there's definitely hope for a Flight of the Conchords film, saying, "We’re gonna try and do a movie. We just need a story." Though the HBO comedy series fizzled out after just two seasons, the show's 23 episodes are enough to convince me that these guys have what it takes to be movie stars.

  1. The Muppets movie made me miss the Conchords' quirky songs. The Muppets was a reunion for McKenzie and director James Bobin, who co-created Flight of the Conchords. McKenzie acted as the music supervisor for the film, and the songs in the musical absolutely have an eau de Conchords. Who else could write songs like "Me Party" and "Man or Muppet?" Clearly McKenzie hasn't lost his touch, and the fun, silly musical numbers in The Muppets prove he's got the chops to take his show to the big screen.
  2. The HBO series burned out too soon. It's pretty much consensus amongst Flight of the Conchords fans that the first season was genius, but the second was subpar. It was hard to top the random hilarity of the first batch of episodes, and it was clear that McKenzie and Jemaine Clement had some issues coming up with new songs to fit another season, but that doesn't mean we've given up on them.
  3. Bret and Jemaine need to be bigger stars than they are. This is the first I've heard about McKenzie since his days with the Conchords (other than the news of his upcoming small role in The Hobbit), and Clement has been mostly under the radar as well. Both of these guys are talented and hilarious, and a movie is exactly what they need to get back on the map.
  4. A movie would give them time to develop great songs and a fun story. It seemed like part of the problem with the second season of the TV show is that the guys were pressed for time, but there would be no rush on a movie. Plus, with a brand-new story, maybe the Conchords could finally get their big break?

I love a good TV romance, but the really enduring relationships on the small screen are the friendships.

R.I.P. Flight of the Conchords: My Favorite Musical Moments

Even though evidence has been mounting that Flight of the Conchords wouldn't be coming back for a third season, I'm still supremely bummed that Bret and Jemaine have confirmed that they won't be coming back via their website.

Even though evidence has been mounting that Flight of the Conchords wouldn't be coming back for a third season, I'm still supremely bummed that Bret and Jemaine have confirmed that they won't be coming back via their website.

So, since the majority of you said that you'd also be disappointed if the show didn't return, I think you'll appreciate my video tribute to the Conchords. Sure, the humor of the show was hilarious, but the guys' biggest impact came from their original songs like "Business Time." Luckily, with their albums and DVDs, I can still count on the guys to make me feel like the most beautiful girl in the room whenever I need a pick-me-up.

The Conchords May Not Fly Again — Are You Bummed?

The Flight of the Conchords released a new album just a few weeks ago, but we may be seeing less of the goofy New Zealanders in the future.

The Flight of the Conchords released a new album just a few weeks ago, but we may be seeing less of the goofy New Zealanders in the future. In a recent interview, Jemaine Clement hinted there might not be a third season of their HBO series. He said, "It very likely might not. . . We've got to write the series, but we've also got to write the songs, and just dividing your time into those two writing tasks is really tricky."

I still love watching (and listening to!) the Conchords first season, though I admittedly was less enthused about the second set of episodes. Still, I would be sad to see them go. What about you — are you bummed about this news?

What to Download: New Music Today

It's one of my favorite days of the week: Tuesday!

It's one of my favorite days of the week: Tuesday! Which means I get to add DVDs to my Netflix queue, along with some brand new tunes for my iPod. So check out today's music releases for what you should download. (And if you like to review albums, don't forget to take a peek at the Music Review Group in the community.)

A smooth ride: Sufjan Stevens takes a breather from his states project with BQE, an ode to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. He originally performed the work to accompany a film about the road, but the music stands on its own as a beautiful orchestral arrangement. Warning if you like Stevens's mellow voice: BQE is all instrumental. Still, it proves that he has what it takes as a composer, and I'd like to see him lend his talents to more of this sort of work. My picks: Movement II: Sleeping Invader, which sounds like a ballet dream sequence, and Traffic Shock, which mixes in clashing electronic sounds like a busy gridlock.

Pretty packs a punch: If you haven't heard of Florence and the Machine, get ready. Florence Welch is the latest spunky Brit singer on the scene, and her debut Lungs already went platinum in the UK. Today, it's available to buy stateside. She's the singer I'd want to be if I had my own band — a woman who wails while banging the tambourine — and her album veers between tough-chick anthems and haunting ballads a la Sarah McLachlan. Make sure you try the hand-clapping, feel-good Dog Days Are Over or the romantic Cosmic Love.

Is Flight of the Conchords Coming to Rock Band?

Last Sunday during the Primetime Emmy Awards, red carpet host Chris Harrison jokingly asked Flight of the Conchords duo Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement if they had any plans for a Flight of the Conchords debut on Rock Band.

Last Sunday during the Primetime Emmy Awards, red carpet host Chris Harrison jokingly asked Flight of the Conchords duo Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement if they had any plans for a Flight of the Conchords debut on Rock Band.

A serious-sounding Bret leaned forward into the microphone and said, "We have three songs on the next Rock Band." A lot of people think he's joking, but I detected a note of seriousness. With a duo this funny, it remains to be seen if they're serious, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll soon be singing, "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" on Rock Band!

Flight of the Conchords: Season Two
If ever there was a DVD set to bring home and enjoy over and over again it's one for Flight of the Conchords! This show is a neverending source of joy because Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie are so very funny. Plus the songs are actually quite catchy.

In the second season of their HBO show, the two guys continue to struggle to make it in the music industry and meet the ladies of Manhattan. Some of the DVD extras include outtakes, deleted scenes, and Dave's Pawn Shop commercials.
