First Look: Alvin and the Chipmunks

When I first learned they'd be making a live-action and CG movie of Alvin and the Chipmunks, I cringed. I guess I don't agree with remaking a classic favorite simply because we now have the technology to make the chipmunks look more lifelike. But alas, Hollywood doesn't listen to me nearly as often as I'd like, so here we are with the first trailer for Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I'm a little comforted by the fact that it's directed by Tim Hill who co-wrote the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, which I'm not above admitting I saw in theaters and loved. And to some extent I think the beginning sequence of the trailer is cute with the screaming crowds and the voiceover saying that they caused a media sensation years ago and now they're back. But then they get into actually showing the chipmunks and their David (Jason Lee). I found it painful to watch, and even more painful to live with that song in my head for the rest of the day. Well, the chipmunks are really cute. I don't know why they would change their whole appearence. I guess it will work with kids who have never seen the cartoon before, but of course for us "old folks" it's just plain wrong.

So Alvin's voice is right, Jason Lee is awesome, and the chipmunks are as cute as can be... so why do I still have such a bad feeling about this?

I went to see the Simpsons movie yesterday and they played in the theater during the previews, I almost died laughing at the idea.

The only good thing I can say about the trailer is the fact that the voices for the chipmunks are the ones from the 80's cartoon, which is the one most of the people on here probably grew up on. If they're not the same exact actors, then someone is very talented at imitating voices because Alvin and Theodore's voices were spot on.

The chipmunks look cute, and their voices sound almost dead on to the original actors, but I don't know. I was a total fan of the cartoon and movies, I'm not sure if I'll like as much seeing them in CG. :/

That really made me wince. Why do children's movies have to be rife with scatological humor these days? I think this might've looked better if they did CG all the way through.
