The Fifth Estate Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch Is Julian Assange, WikiLeaks Founder

The first trailer for The Fifth Estate — aka The WikiLeaks Movie — has been released, and it's a doozy. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Julian Assange, who, along with Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl), founded the international secret-sharing organization WikiLeaks. The thriller is based on the real-life story of Assange and Domscheit-Berg as they started WikiLeaks, the arrests that resulted from the information that appeared on the site, and the eventual media circus surrounding the legality of the site. Laura Linney and Stanley Tucci star as US government employees attempting to take down Assange, and for good measure, Anthony Mackie is in there, too.

Cumberbatch quoting Oscar Wilde ("Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, he will tell you the truth.") as Assange gives me the chills! It's almost scary how closely he can imitate the polarizing figure. I can't wait until The Fifth Estate hits theaters on Oct. 11, and not just because it looks like it could be an Oscar contender or because it's especially timely in light of this year's Edward Snowden controversy. What I like about the trailer is that it seems to focus a lot on the evolving personal relationship between Assange and his partner, a dynamic which reminds me fondly of The Social Network. Watch the trailer after the jump.
