Maybe the Academy was afraid to be edgy after last year's Anne Hathaway/James Franco hosting debacle, but it made this year's show decidedly boring. That is, except when one of the big winners was on stage, because the acceptance speeches were fantastic. There was Meryl Streep's "whatever," Octavia Spencer's genuine tears, Christopher Plummer's musing where his Oscar had been all these years, and Jean Dujardin's very French, very delightful declaration of "I love your country!" These heartfelt moments reminded us of what the Oscars are really about.
