Pretty Little Liars: Why Ezra Might Still Be "A"

It just goes to show you: when it comes to Pretty Little Liars, you never know. Even when you think you know, there's still a chance you don't. I was absolutely floored by this week's episode, where Aria finds out that Ezra probably isn't "A" after all. But, as we just said, you never really know. So, is Ezra innocent or not?

It's been almost six months since the Summer finale, when Ezra first blipped onto our "A" radar, and the evidence and tension have been steadily mounting since then. So, who is Ezra really? Can we trust him? Let's figure this out.

Why Ezra Might Not Be "A" After All

  • Marlene King, the creator, confirmed it. "Ezra is not A, but he is a pretty little liar," King said in an interview with E! after the episode aired. Well, it doesn't get clearer than that.
  • He's never dressed like "A." As King also points out in the above interview, Ezra's default outfit for mischief was a black baseball hat and a black jacket. "A," on the other hand, wears that signature black hoodie. And if Ezra was the evil genius terrorizing the girls, they wouldn't have continued to show the hooded figure.
  • Ezra's been hurt by "A" before. Let's not forget that Ezra and Aria's relationship has constantly been at risk of exposure, and if Ezra's to be trusted, maintaining that relationship is vital to his book.

Why Ezra Might Still Be "A"

  • Marlene King might be bending the truth. The biggest part of this show is preserving the mystery. King has had to tiptoe around the truth before — like when Toby and Spencer were members of the "A" team, but they actually weren't — so it would make sense for her to keep doing it.
  • Some of the evidence is still suspicious. Even if Ezra is writing a true-crime tell-all, why does he have surveillance on his apartment? Why is he having photographers stalk and trail the girls? Why does he need that whole high-tech lair? And why did he tear apart Hanna's room to find Ali's diary?! There are certain things you just can't undo.
  • He lied before; he can lie again. If he's admitting to Aria that he's a liar, who's to say he's not weaving a new web of lies? Who's to say he's not covering his tracks? I'm going to keep giving him suspicious side-eye, because as we've learned, you never know. Trust no one.
