Do You Watch More or Less TV Than Average?

TV watching in the US is now at an all-time high. According to a new Nielsen survey, the average US household has the TV on for eight hours and 18 minutes each day. That's more than a third of the day!

Granted, that doesn't mean people are actually watching closely — having the TV on in the background would count toward that total. But still! Eight hours! Not to say I've never done it, but I assume I watch more TV than most people. But I could be wrong, so tell me — how does your TV watching compare to the US average?

I crave the background noise even if I'm not watching it. I know it sounds crazy but it also helps me study. If I have music on its way too distracting (could be due to the fact that I used to be an audio engineer) but the tv on at a low volume is the perfect white noise.

it depends on the day, weekends are a lot since we are broke so we don't go anywhere ha-ha.During the week I would say about 5-7 hrs but it varies on my fiances schedule.

I'm sorry but watching shows on the computer counts as watching TV - I hate when people get all anti-TV and say they don't watch it at all, but still torrent shows and stream video. Um, still watching TV, just on a computer monitor!

I probably watch around 8-12 hours a WEEK, and that includes DVDs.

during the week i say i only watch about 2 -3 hrs of television but the weekend is a non-stop marathon of catching up on all the shows i tivo'd during the week. so yeah sat and sun i avg way more than 8 hrs a day. so sad... i should be outside enjoying the weather.

I have the TV on 24 hours a day. I listen to nick at night as i fall asleep, and I watch news as i get ready for work on the morning. I only actually watch about 3 hours a day though. Less if it isn't wednesday, thursday, or sunday.

8 hours... Sounds like a lot, but I realize that I basically shifted my TV watching to Internet surfing. I generally watch 2 hours a night at most.

Not even close. I have the tv on for about 30 min in the morning to hear the weather, traffic, and news. Other than that, it's not unlikely that the tv won't be on again. If it is, the most would be 2 hours and on a bad night maybe 3. I can't believe that people seriously spend THAT much time in front of the tv. I'd go stir crazy.

I watch TV a lot less than that. I think the difference is that I only turn on the TV to watch a specific show. Most people I know flip the TV on as soon as they're bored, or they'll keep it on all day while they're doing other things. I think they waste so much of their time without even realizing it. I watch a few shows loyally throughout the week, and I also like to watch an episode or two of a show online or on DVD to wind down before bed.

We just recently got cable again after going 2 years without (or satellite or antennae)... and we were immediately overwhelmed when we started watching TV again. We have to retrain ourselves to be able to handle the amount of loud, obnoxious commercials they throw at you. We'll watch maybe 30 minutes on an average day, if that. An hour at the most. I do watch a good handful of shows on Hulu and what not, though.

i think i watch about an hour or two a day, but most of the time i'll just get the torrents on my laptop. my fiance has the news on a lot though....thankfully this question isn't 'how much time to you spend online in a day'... yikes.

The only shows I care to follow are Girls Next Door and Gossip Girl. Other than that I just watch Seinfeld or I Love Lucy reruns. The only day I really watch tv for a long time is when I'm sick..then I watch TVLand and those mindless MTV reality shows.

karlotta, I'm with you. My husband and I do own a t.v. but we use it for the PS3 and movies. Anytime I go to a friends' house I get mesmerized by what is on. I'd rather be on the computer, it's a lifestyle that fits us better. I get to read what I want when I want, watch what I want when I want online. 8)
