Do You Care About Owning Music on Vinyl?

Recently, I saw that one of my favorite bands, the Magnetic Fields, would be releasing its full catalog on 12-inch vinyl records. I do actually own a record player, and yet I still couldn't decide if I really cared about hearing all the Fields' songs on vinyl rather than on the CDs I already have.

Some people are purists and believe that music just sounds better on vinyl. Others are totally content with hearing songs on CD or MP3. What about you? Are you a vinyl lover, or are you just fine with your albums coming in other forms?

i have a record player, but not the right "connector" to hook it up to my stereo, so the sound isn't as great as it could be. i actually have tons of vinyl - all really great albums that my friend/roommie and I picked up when we lived in Calgary...so many memories of buying all of it! still, i think we'll sell it all and the player because it takes up a lot of room and we don't listen to it often (because of the annoyance of connecting it)...and when we move across the country in 2 years it'll be too much of a hassle to move the heavy boxes of records. sad. but - what to do?

I agree that the sound is just stellar on vinyl. I also love the ritual of flipping through all of our records, sliding the record out of the sleeve, and putting it on the turntable. Also, the artwork is so much cooler to look at it when it's on a record!

I really want to buy a record player and own some vinyls. I recently stashed my old stereo in the closet so now I just have my Ipod stereo/alarm clock.

I don't think anything sounds as good as vinyl. We have a lot of LPs. Mostly stuff like Fleetwood MAC, Simon and Garfunkel, Heart, The Mamas and the Papas, The Eagles, etc.

The only reason I would buy vinyl would be if it were valuable, or would increase in value. Or if I were creating some kind of craft or DIY home decor that used old records.

The only vinyl I have are the records my parents gave me from when they were younger. I have some Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Janis Joplin...that kind of thing. I like busting them out occasionally, but I usually stick to mp3's or cds.

Vinyl = how music is supposed to sound. CDs are okay, but I generally only purchase them if I can't find the album or the price isn't reasonable. I cringe at the thought of mp3s.

I actually bought a Fisher Price record player on Ebay recently, & I love it!! I started to scour thrift stores & garage sales for records and it's so much fun! I don't look for contemporary music though, I like to get "oldie" records like Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkle....that type of music just sounds cooler on vinyl. I've got a prety cool collection now. =) But I still listen to my ipod too, can't beat the convenience of itunes!

I only have one vinyl and that is of The Doors performing live. It was that great moment in my life when I was walking through Greenwich Village with some friends and this small record shop was selling it. I also bought Wish you were here from Pink Floyd for my BF. They are in the plastic to keep as art pieces. My dad however, just recently installed a record player through his surround sound and we listen to Michael Jackson's thriller on that, which is quite fun :)
