A lot of shows that were taken off the air during the writers' strike will be hitting the reset button when they return over the next few weeks, jumping weeks or even months ahead of where we left them. But that's nothing compared to what Desperate Housewives could be planning. According to TV Guide's sources, the show is considering flashing forward five years in this season's finale . . . and then staying there for the rest of the time the show is on.
Or, maybe they have another idea. Insiders told the same TV Guide reporter that the show might actually jump back five years, returning to a time when Mary Alice was a vital part of the Wisteria Lane gang, Lynette never had cancer, and destructive tornadoes were simply a paranoid nightmare.
They're both interesting ideas, and I think they'd make cool episodes of the show — but I'm not sure it's worth completely restructuring the entire series around a new timeline. The flash-forward scenario, especially, seems to veer a little too close to Lost territory, and the flashbacks would probably mean losing characters like Katherine (not to mention, what would happen to all the teenagers? I doubt they can just be made to look five years younger). But, I admit I would love to see more of Brenda Strong as Mary Alice, so I'd be up for watching a significant story arc set in the past, even if going back for the whole remainder of the series would be taking things a bit too far.
Who knows if these ideas have real weight behind them or if they're just crazy things the writers dreamed up while they were hoofing it on the picket lines. Regardless, it's worth asking: Would you prefer your Housewives in the past, present, or future?

I hate the idea of completely restructuring the series. I love flash back episodes (the ones on Friends were always my favorites), but when you flash forward, you're pretty much stuck with it, unless it turns out to be a dream. Housewives is a good show and is doing well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
1Desperate Housewives went from a suspenseful, kinda funny and outrageous show to something incredibly ridiculous. They can't keep the show alive and this is just one trick to try and keep people interested...I don't think it will work. This show doesn't have enough substance or storylines that would be interesting.
2I don't mind a flash-forward, actually, but only if it's done really well. It theoretically could allow the writers to start up some storyline they've devised that somehow needs 5 years of build-up they don't want to have to show and would prefer to recap. Doesn't necessarily need to go into Lost-land. The show could be almost exactly what it is now, just set 5 years in the future. I allow it could be awful, but would still give it a chance. A permanent flashback doesn't appeal to me at all. I'm with you completely on that one, Buzz.
3I'm with GeriAnne, this sounds like a stunt to get people interested in watching the show, and may get a ratings boost at first, but it will not last.
4I haven't watched the show in a season or 2, this may bring me back for a while.
5That show has gotten incredibly goofy. I think flashing back in time might allow them to go back to the fun petty drama instead of...well, tornadoes.
6The tornado was pretty ridiculous, as was Lynette's cancer, at least the way they portrayed it! I honestly think this idea could give them a way to keep it fresh without resorting to such silly plot devices.
7i'm still a big fan of the show, even though it is kind of "campy"....A flash forward would be interesting....bt I agree, what about the teenagers and kids? I guess we'll have to wait and see!
