Dakota Fanning to Rock Out in Joan Jett Movie

She's not playing Joan Jett herself — that role has gone to Kristen Stewart — but Dakota Fanning is in talks to join the cast of The Runaways as the lead singer of Jett's all-girl band. Here's more:

At 15, Fanning is the same age [Cherie] Currie was when she made her debut with the Runaways as the lead singer who belted out hard-edged tunes like "Cherry Bomb." Currie became caught up in drugs and a hard-partying lifestyle.

Now, I know Fanning has done dark stuff as she's gotten older and moved away from some of the precious little girl roles, but a hard-partying rocker? I'll be very curious to see how this turns out. In general, I'm fascinated by Fanning's career as she transitions into adulthood as it's a rocky path that not every actor seems to be able to navigate. Do you think Fanning is able to pull off these heavier, tougher roles?

I'm ok with KS as Joan Jett, and I really hope Dakota can pull this off. I have detested her cutesy-ness for years. It would be nice to see her do something different and change my opinion about her.

Who's gonna play Lita Ford? I hate Kristen Stewart. The girl can only conjure up one personality. Dakota Fanning has got it in her to kill this role. I think that she is an interesting choice for this film.

Now I'm not world's biggest Kristen Stewart fan and I've only seen Twilight once (trust me, that's a lot less than my friends) and maybe it's just the two pictures, but she (Kristen) actually looks a bit like Joan Jett (on the pictures above, anyway)!

thank God I am not the only one who absolutely detests Kristen Stewart - just because she knows how to not comb her hair and look like a drug addict at the many Twilight premieres does not nullify the fact that she is a terrible actress! and I agree with Bella; I don't think anyone could do the great Joan Jett justice. as for Dakota, we'll see. she, at least, is a good actress, and who knows...

Ugh, both are bad choices, but I can see Dakota Fanning pulling off Cherrie Curie better than Kirsten Dunst pulling off Debbie Harry.

Kristen Stewart got to be one of the worst actresses I've ever seen, plus has no charisma and is not likable at all. Dakota is better than Kristen, she can pull it off.

Dakota is a great actress, but I'd cast Evan Rachel Wood. Looks like the original character and she has both a 'teen' and 'vamp' side to her... Casting Evan Rachel Wood would be typecasting, but they don't call it 'type' casting for nothing.. :)

I am a joan jett huge fan too but I think kristen is going to do it great, shes got something that remind me to Joan... and about dakota I dont know, shes still a little girl.
