Could Anne Hathaway Play Holly Golightly?

Relax: This is just a tiny little rumor and nobody is remaking Breakfast at Tiffany's (yet). But apparently the idea of a remake has been bandied about for a long time now, with the major issue being, of course, who would take on the iconic Audrey Hepburn role, Holly Golightly?

In Variety, Liz Smith claims that "if anybody could be Holly Golightly in the 21st century, it's Anne" Hathaway who, Smith says, "has an unusually alert, charming way about her — elfin, sexy, princessy, without being prissy."

Do you agree with this assessment of Hathaway? She's certainly been getting a lot of attention lately — do you think she could pull off this role?

Anne Hathaway is as wrong for the part of Holly Golightly, as was Audrey Hepburn. In the book version of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," Holly had albino-blond and yellow hair, and was just nineteen years old. Actually, the Lindsay Lohan of just a few, short years ago (think, "Freaky Friday") would have been perfect!

I think you would be perfect. Yes the majority of her roles are goofy, but she can also play a very serious, elegant roll. I think it's perfect for her!

WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE SAYING SHE'S GOOD FOR? Anne is a trashy, slutty, intolerant-bigot attention whore with a strong lack of talent, has a bitchy diva attitude and jealousy issues on top of being an unattractive clownface with way too much makeup (none of which the unconventionally gorgeous, sweet Audrey had BTW- kinda why this sucks). Who cares if they remake this? It was overrated anyway. No one ever needs to be compared to Audrey if they've got no class, talent, charisma, or beauty at all- and Anne lacks it. Natalie Portman is better but she looks nothing like Audrey in any way (warm coloring, classic beauty, etc.) and her 'talent' is very overrated. The only people who can come CLOSE to it are Rachel Weisz, Anne Walton (seen Hellboy 2 lately? She's the elegant elf princess. Sound familiar? She looks almost exactly like Aud!), or Audrey Tautou. Ugh!

She actually played Princess Penelope in an episode of the Simpsons and it had the famous moon river scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's. She actually did surprisingly well singing the song. Audrey's version is still my FAVORITE, but Anne's definitely was worth watching and hearing.

some movies should never be re maid it isn't the fact that she could play the part but that no one should other then Audrey Hepburn it would definitely ruin it for feature generations.

If we remade Breakfast at Tiffany's my jaw would just remain dropped in an astounded O. I love anne hathaway-I really do but no one could ever have the effortless style class and poise as Audrey

as a fan of Audrey, Natalie Portman or Kiera Knigthley can take a role of Audrey Hepburn. I like Anne but to place her as a Holly of Breakfast of Tiffany...well not....!

The only candidate who comes close, in my opinion, is Audrey Tautou--and she's already played a variation on Holly Golightly/"Breakfast at Tiffany's" in a recent French film called (in the US) "Priceless"---where she is a professional mistress who becomes romantically involved with a hotel employee. Adorable movie, if anyone hasn't seen it yet!

By the way, I meant to say "Is nothing sacred?" as a rhetorical question to the people who thought up this remake idea, it wasn't meant as a refutation to others on this post. Just thought I'd clarify ;)

Is nothing sacred? Seriously? This movie is a classic and no one could play Holly Golightly like Audrey Hepburn did. The only person who I could even consider in this role is Natalie Portman, but I think she would be more well-suited for an Audrey Hepburn biopic than a Breakfast at Tiffany's remake (please make this biopic soon Hollywood! while NP is young enough to play the part!) I think the only way that I could see this working is if they did an updated version, a la Clueless, like RCLDesignGirl suggested.

I think Jennifer Love Hewitt was wonderful in the remake a few years ago. I believe she is the only one that could pull it off. Anne may be a good Eliza Doolittle, why not do a remake of that?

I stand firmly against anybody else in that role. There's absolutely no valid reason to remake this classic. It was done perfectly the first time. I agree, some things are sacred. It would be a huge mistake for any actor to try to fill those shoes. I think they'd only end up embarrassing themselves.

Okay, this is quite different and really just an exercise of the imagination, but how about Emma Roberts? I don't think she has the acting chops, but she does have the look.

like girlnone said, the book is quite different than the movie. i don't see any reason to remake something so classic unless they're going to make the new movie closer to the tone of the book. i suppose a remade version set in modern times might be interesting, but (like others have said) the things that made the book/movie so shocking would be laughed off at today's movie-going audience. i just. we don't need to remake this movie. if someone needs to make more money off of it, how about remastering it so that it looks incredible on our shiny dvd players instead?

In casting this part there would be a difficult dilemma in that any casting director would be bound to looking for someone exactly like Audrey. Then they'd realize their search and point are futile because the perfect film had already been made of the short story. That said, if they were to make a version more faithful to the original Capote copy, and cast a racist Texan turned frenchified New Yorker...Leighton Meester! However she's already carving out her own niche as a Holly Golightly in the 21st century whose character already worships Hepburn and Tiffany's. It's a mute topic.
