Christian Bale Shows His Softer Side After a Best Supporting Actor Win

Christian Bale was crowned best supporting actor for his role in The Fighter at this evening's Critics' Choice Awards in LA, and after making a moving acceptance speech on stage, he came into the press room. He spoke about his radical transformation into Dicky Eklund, but also sweetly spoke about the importance of family and his wife Sibi Blazic. Christian said:

  • On how he unwinds: "Family. And there's nothing like getting on a motorcycle, it's just extraordinary . . . That's something I truly love."
  • On tearing up when talking about his family during his acceptance speech: "I know! I didn't think I was going to do that! I get choked up about that stuff. I'm an Englishman and everything — stiff upper lip. I guess I've been in the States too long!"
  • On the support of his wife, Sibi: "It's everything. I truly believe you can't celebrate something like this without having your partner with you. Making movies takes so much time, and it ain't just the time that you're filming, the character's going home from the first day of shooting. She's had to be married to so many different characters over our marriage, and some women might say, 'Hey that's great! Variety is the spice of life.' I know that it truly would be impossible to do it without her, and she's such a good strong woman. I owe everything to her."
  • On the secret to a good punch: "Everything comes from the ass!"
  • On if prepping to play Dicky Eklund was like getting ready for his role in the Machinist: "It's Dicky, man. He's unlike any other character. The physical stuff, that's just the beginning. That's just a way to get into it . . . he's something else, I love him to bits. We're good friends now."
