Jefferson Hack Announces Monthly "Digital Cover Star" Concept for Another Magazine

>> Just a couple of weeks ago, Jefferson Hack told The Business of Fashion: “The old media model is a frozen moment in time; a monthly magazine, a seasonal trend — it’s over. Digital culture is a constant stream. Either you adapt to it, or you are a dinosaur and you will die.” He added: “This is a new era of digital beauty.”

In light of his recent comments — and in efforts to put his money where his mouth is — Hack's bi-annual Another announced via statement today that Charlotte Gainsbourg is the magazine's first "Digital Cover Star," in an effort to "transform the concept of the magazine cover star for the web."

Every month, a new "Digital Cover Star" is planned »

French Beauty Is Easy — Kind Of

Singer/actress/face of Balenciaga Charlotte Gainsbourg has the kind of style that seems to be encoded in French DNA.

Singer/actress/face of Balenciaga Charlotte Gainsbourg has the kind of style that seems to be encoded in French DNA. At yesterday's Balenciaga presentation in Paris, she showed off her typically understated brand of beauty: minimal makeup and the tousled, fringe-in-face haircut her mother Jane Birkin made famous. This look is especially appealing for those of us who don't want to spend an hour primping each morning. (Ahem, me.)

Of course, this style just looks easy. Charlotte's glossy hair and glowing skin are most likely due to a disciplined beauty regimen. From traveling, I've noticed that skin care is a much larger part of grooming in France than it is here. For many French women, a spa facial isn't a luxury as much as it is a necessary discipline in their skincare routine. And while makeup counters exist in stores like Printemps, the bigger focus is on skin care. I have no idea what Charlotte does to get her beautiful complexion, but seeing it is a reminder that it has been far too long since my pores have been properly purged.

Musical je ne sais quoi: When you have Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck teaming up to write an album, it better be good, and IRM doesn't disappoint. Taken from the French acronym for an MRI, Gainsbourg drew inspiration from her own MRIs following her water-skiing accident (and resulting hemorrhage) in 2007. As such, "Master's Hand" includes the lyrics "Paint my bones/ Drill my brain/ All full of holes" and the title track incorporates robotic, machine noise. Sounds dismal, but the overall affect is often beautiful and mysterious, sweeping strings paired with Gainsbourg's sexy, whispered sing-talking. And of course you have Beck and Gainsbourg's catchy duet "Heaven Can Wait." In a word: IRM is just cool.

Soulful healing: Ever since Corinne Bailey Rae's husband died of an accidental overdose nearly two years ago, the singer has been laying low. Now, she's back in a big way, delivering a rich, layered sophomore album titled The Sea, and surprise — it's actually eerily comforting and uplifting. "Love's on Its Way" conveys some of Rae's despair, but a nice build makes for a pretty, haunting track, and on "The Blackest Lily" she takes on a harder-edged sound. Both are excellent, but my favorite is "Paris Nights/New York Mornings" which feels happy-go-lucky and romantic (and makes me want to dance!) all at the same time.

Anne Leads the Celebrity Couture Guests to Paris

The Spring couture shows are currently underway in Paris, which means it's time for star-studded front rows.

The Spring couture shows are currently underway in Paris, which means it's time for star-studded front rows. Anne Hathaway was Giorgio Armani's guest of honor yesterday for his presentation, though she was able to tear herself away from his runway full of red carpet-worthy gowns long enough to exchange loving glances with her boyfriend Adam Shulman. Anne recently found out she's the year's female recipient of Harvard's Hasty Pudding pot, and she's also set to announce the Oscar nominations back in LA on February 2. Elsewhere in Paris, Hilary Swank joined Inglourious Basterds's Melanie Laurent at a collection from Etam designed by the model Natalia Vodianova. This morning brought Karl Lagerfeld's latest collection for Chanel, which went with a "neon baroque" theme. Pregnant Claudia Schiffer was there to join Alexa Chung and the always attention-grabbing Kanye West and Amber Rose.

Natasha Poly, Lily Cole, Carine Roitfeld and More Fashion Figures Surface at 2009 Cannes Film Festival

>> The Cannes Film Festival is well underway and with the red carpet fashion such a focus, it's no surprise that some of the industry's finest are out in full form.  Roberto Cavalli, who like last year continues to offer his yacht up to guests and score a number of red carpet moments — including dressing Natasha Poly for today's Inglourious Basterds premiere — was spotted riding around atop a Segway.  Georgina Chapman is also in town, cinching Marchesa dress appearances on the likes of Penelope Cruz yesterday and Diane Kruger today.

Lily Cole, in Cannes for her own upcoming movie premiere, stepped out with boyfriend Enrique Murciano on Monday. "I've been studying the history of art in college," she told FWD. "But the gorgeous beach and sun is what everyone needs with two weeks left in the semester!"  Carine Roitfeld, who will have her big red carpet moment tomorrow at the amfAR benefit, appeared in lacy Balmain at a premiere today with Patrick Demarchelier.

Balenciaga muse Charlotte Gainsbourg debuted a Fall 2009 dress from the label at her Antichrist premiere, Eva Herzigova showed up in a sheer dress for the second year in a row, and Doutzen Kroes also popped up wearing Alaia, of which she tweeted, "So excited he lets me wear his dress!!"

Fab Ad: Balenciaga Fall '08

I've always thought of actress and daughter of Jane Birkin Charlotte Gainsbourg as a cool girl, but not as a model.

I've always thought of actress and daughter of Jane Birkin Charlotte Gainsbourg as a cool girl, but not as a model. Still, the best friend of Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere has been chosen as the newest face of the house's Fall '08 advertisements. This is not the first time Charlotte has taken a stab at modeling, though; she was once the face of French handbag line Gerard Darel. She may not look like most models out there, but her svelte body is perfect for Balenciaga's latest crop of dresses and slick suits. And her robotic posing goes hand-in-hand with the paired-down but bold collection. What is your take on Balenciaga's Fall '08 ads?

On Our Radar: Jane Birkin Designs For Lutz & Patmos

Lutz & Patmos have been crossing their fingers for this opportunity to arise and now it has; the brand has enlisted British actress and singer Jane Birkin as their latest guest designer.

Lutz & Patmos have been crossing their fingers for this opportunity to arise and now it has; the brand has enlisted British actress and singer Jane Birkin as their latest guest designer.

“She has this really relaxed, nonchalant style without being overtly sexy, which is very sexy,” said Lutz who also mentioned that Birkin, mother to models Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, has played their unofficial muse for quite a while.

Look forward to seeing Birkin's alluring, low-key style translated into organic cashmere sweaters and slim-fitting tanks detailed with raw necklines and crochet. Prices are to be determined.
