The last thing I was expecting from Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes when a bunch of reporters descended on the Private Practice set on Tuesday was a spoiler. But she must have been feeling generous toward the TCA crowd, because we didn't even have to work for our news: Dr. Miranda Bailey of Seattle Grace (the Emmy-nominated Chandra Wilson) will be guest-starring on the third episode of Private Practice's third season.
I suppose it would be too much to ask, though, for Rhimes to reveal exactly why the crossover takes place. The most we could get was that she'll be "performing a very interesting medical procedure" and "will have her own comments about what's going on" over at Oceanside Wellness. I like the sound of that second idea: I think the Southern California doctors could use a patented Bailey smackdown every now and then.
The Bailey visit wasn't the only thing I learned on the set. What follows is spoilery, but if you want to hear details of Violet's fate after that freaky season finale and what's up next for Addison's romantic life, just read more.
Amy Brenneman was on set, so it was clear pretty quickly that Violet survives the attack by her unstable patient. But that doesn't mean she's unharmed. "She gets hurt. Big time," Brenneman said. "She is saved — I mean, she survives. But she gets hurt. It's ugly." We won't have to wait long to find out the details: The first episode of the new season picks up just 20 minutes after the last scene we saw.
After that, though, the episodes will jump a bit forward in time, and things in Violet's relationship with Cooper won't be the same. "There is an emotional fallout for him," Brenneman said, explaining that not only are Violet and Cooper no longer roommates in the first part of this season, they haven't even really spoken for a while. Added Paul Adelstein: "Cooper is kind of avoiding her. He's avoiding going back to the house. . . . He's trying to pay a lot of attention to her, but he feels this guilt that he can't even quite identify, I think." Adelstein said Cooper thinks he's just giving Violet space to bond with her baby — which means, yes, there is a baby!
Some other hints about the new season:
- Cooper and Charlotte are still together and just as dysfunctional as ever — and the stress of dealing with their own reactions to Violet's trauma isn't doing them any favors.
- Naomi really has moved downstairs to the other practice (her on-set office was practically empty).
- "There's a lot of Pete" and Violet, Brenneman said — though Sheldon will also continue to appear. The first episode of the season involves a lot of flashbacks with Violet and Pete, including Pete's early days at Oceanside.
- Addison is going to start the season single. "And maybe to a comedic extent," Kate Walsh said. "There might be a pet cat involved."
Will you follow Bailey to Private Practice? Do you have thoughts on what's next for Violet? And are you glad Addison will try to be happily single for a change?

PPQ
Bailey's appearance will get me to watch PP for sure. Love these TCA updates, Buzz. Looking forward to learning more. Thanks!
1well i think that i'll check it out just to see what happens, but i think that we all kind of guessed what would happen to violet to some extent so that's not really surprising.
i do kind of wonder though why they keep doing these cross overs. it's not like they really help one show or another with ratings...and you'd think that they'd be more involved but last season showed us that it wasn't really the case.
2Yay for Bailey! I love Addie/Bailey scenes.
A cat? I don't care if Addison is single. However, I have waited for 4 seasons (2GA and 2 PrP) to see Addison in a real relationship, now her big love story is going to be with a f**king cat (nooffense to cats). Seriously?
As for the Violet/Pete/Cooper crap, YAWWWWNNN. I could care less!
3Word to Anon. Addison and a cat. Seriously ???????????
4Is the cat serious or is Kate joking ? I can't imagine Addison with a pet anything. As soon as it claws at her fab wardrobe she'll be giving it to Maya.
5This show has become such a mess that Bailey's appearance isn't even an enticement.
6On the bright side, Shonda is admitting that the first 2 episodes, and the Violet/Cooper/Pete/Sheldon/Charlotte are such a piece of crap that she has to do a cross-over by the 3rd episode to keep people interested. She is acknowledging the yawns of the fans.
7I can't wait for the season premiere! I really want to see how Violet gets out of her mess. Holy crap. I'm so excited.
October 1st, where are you?!
8good...i'm happy that Violet survives b/c i really like Amy Brenneman and i love seeing her back on tv!!! although i really don't care for her love octagon (instead of triangle) w/ pete/sheldon/cooper/charlotte.....
oh man, october?? uggghh thats so long!
9Bailey on PP!! that's great news! Can't wait to see her at LA and have a talk with Sam, Love them in the crossover...
10About Violet and Pete, crap!! I really wanted a Paddison story!!!!
and about the cat, although I hate cats I think it could be funny to see Addie interacting with her cat
I'm excited about the flashbacks. I hope that we finally will find something about Pete's past. It's about time.
11What a stupid spoiler about Addison. I couldn't care less about her and her cat. Couldn't they hit her by a bus, like George in GA? We would be free of her annoying character and Kate Walsh's bad acting.
12Seeing Addison with a cat will be fun, but I want her in a relationship.
I hate Violet and her drama.
13Kate Walsh did another interview and said that Addison will be dating later on.
In another interview from Brazil, she said more Addison family members will be coming.
14I only watch the spinoff for Addison.
Without her this show would already have been cancelled.
They should bring her back to Greys (which needs her badly), or free Kate Walsh for another show that is worthy of her talents.
The writing on PP is largely appalling.
15I hate Violet. She seems to be the character most people dislike on this show. So selfish. Grow a spine and find out who the father is and as a Doctor introduce yourself to birth control.
Nothing about Naomi or Sam ?
Addie and cat should be very funny but it sounds like Addie will be in a love triangle soon enough.
16Addison and a cat should be hilarious !
17I watch this show only for Tim Daly. I'm happy that finally he will get a storyline (the flashbacks about his past). I hope it will be something worth his talent. So far he's been wasted on this show.
18Yay for flashabacks from Pete's past. I hope we will find more about his past. He is my favorite character.
19I'm also excited about flashbacks about Pete and Violet past. But I hoped for even earlier flashbacks, when Pete's wife was still alive, so we would find more about what happened to her, why their marriage was so unhappy and also I want to know what was his previous medical specialty and why he decided to switch to alternative medicine.
20Whatever, I will get any storyline with Pete. I love him! And I adore Tim Daly.
I didn't expect that the baby would survive. So I guess Sheldon is going to be the father, because there must be some drama. I guess that it will be an obstacle for Pete and Violet relationship. I hope they survive as a couple, I love them. They are cute together and have fantastic chemistry. Pete/Violet and Cooper/Charlotte are reasons why I watch the show.
21I cannot STAND Violet. She is a psychiatrist who is supposed to be helping people deal with their problems when she cannot even deal with her OWN?!? No practice would keep a nut job like that on!
