Ryan Gosling and his Drive director, Nicolas Winding Refn, teamed up again at Cannes this year to debut their hyperviolent Only God Forgives, and reactions to the bloody noir have skewed toward the negative; the film was loudly booed by one audience yesterday. Some are calling the movie beautiful and breathtaking, but others have derided it, along with Ryan's performance, as catatonic and devoid of feeling.
The lukewarm reception for the movie was in sharp contrast to Ryan and Nicolas' last Cannes outing together with Drive, which was one of the most popular films at the 2010 festival. Ryan, however, wasn't on hand to field the negativity this year. He remained in the States, where he's busy shooting his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster.
