Eagle Eye: Absurd . . . ly Fun

The story of Big Brother watching and controlling all of the helpless citizens in Eagle Eye might be more effective if it weren't quite so preposterous.

The story of Big Brother watching and controlling all of the helpless citizens in Eagle Eye might be more effective if it weren't quite so preposterous. That said, this movie intends to thrill and entertain, and it succeeds on all counts. It holds your attention with all the plot twists and the bombardment of explosions, the kind of explosions that make a certain audience cheer. Eagle Eye will probably not be an award-winner, but it's great for when you want to totally escape with a loud, ridiculous, big ol' Hollywood popcorn flick.

For starters, the two leads are seriously likable. I so enjoy watching Michelle Monaghan in pretty much anything (even crap like Made of Honor) because she seems so comfortable on screen. She's like someone we all might know. Not average, really, but familiar in a comforting way — smart, nurturing, sweet, tough. And Shia LaBeouf is utterly adorable in this film. It doesn't ask much of him, but he delivers nicely nonetheless. He plays Jerry Shaw, a slacker living in Chicago and having trouble making ends meet. The sudden death of his estranged twin brother Ethan sets off a series of baffling occurrences for Jerry, starting with a strange woman contacting him on the phone just as he's being set up to look like a terrorist. Oh, this is only the beginning, though, so read more

You all aren't huge fans of Megan Fox, but the sexy siren held her Transformers costar's hand as they walked down the red carpet. Shia's costars in the movie at hand last night, Michelle Monaghan and Billy Bob Thornton, looked beautiful and creepy respectively. Billy Bob, Ashley Olsen, Basinger Are The Informers

Check out this interesting-looking cast.

Check out this interesting-looking cast.
This film project brings together some interesting folks: Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Ashley Olsen, Brandon Routh, Jon Foster and Lou Pucci are all set to star in The Informers, based on a collection of short stories by Bret Easton Ellis.

What's it about?
Well, in typical Ellis fashion (this is the man who penned American Psycho and Rules of Attraction), I'm betting on a healthy dose of rape, drug use and general depravity. Variety describes the plot thusly: "The drama is set over the course of a week in 1983, in the chillingly nihilistic world of Ellis' youth in Los Angeles. Seven storylines intersect, involving movie execs, rock stars, a vampire and other morally challenged characters."

Ashley Olsen? Really?
Molly thinks this is a mistake, that reporters on this story are mixing up Ashley and Mary-Kate. If this turns out to be true, it will be pretty amusing.

TV Tonight: Friday Night Lights, the Movie

Before it was a fantastic TV show, Friday Night Lights was a bestselling nonfiction book about a Texas high school football team that became a 2004 movie starring Billy Bob Thornton.

Before it was a fantastic TV show, Friday Night Lights was a bestselling nonfiction book about a Texas high school football team that became a 2004 movie starring Billy Bob Thornton. The movie premieres on FX tonight, and it's a great mix of character drama and thrilling football action.

The movie sticks closer to the book than the TV series does, but both show the impact of the team's victories — and defeats — on a dusty, depressed small town that doesn't have a lot else going for it. Fun fact: Connie Britton, who totally deserves an Emmy for her role as the coach's wife on the "Friday Night Lights" TV show, also plays the coach's wife in the movie. To see the trailer, read more
