Ben Affleck to Join The Great Gatsby as Tom Buchanan

Ben Affleck is about to take up residence in East Egg. The actor is in talks to play Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby, the role that Bradley Cooper has had his eye on. Buchanan is the husband of Daisy (who will be played by Carey Mulligan) and is the man who stands in the way of the love between his wife and Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The only thing in the way of Affleck's participation is a scheduling conflict with this film and his next directing effort for a movie called Argo. I for one hope it works out; I love the idea of Affleck as the wealthy Buchanan in 1920s garb and DiCaprio's romantic rival — even if it is in 3D.

Ben is a good actor anyone that has seen Hollywoodland knows that .Bradley Cooper would have been great also but Paul Rudd? He's mediocre at best.This would be great with a good script.But adding Baz Lurhmann and 3D makes it sound way cheesy
If this makes any sense...I think Ben is like Tom in real life when at his worst but if he tried to ACT like Tom as though it was a stretch for him, he couldn't. It would be very affected...I think this is why I think people would like him in the role. He fits the bill in real life but ultimately, he can't do it. I love the version with Paul Rudd as Nick.
Ben is Tom in real life but he can't "act" the part, if that makes any sense.

Not, Tom and NIck are friends from college and both around 30. Daisy is much younger and is in her early 20s (around 22-23). Gatsby is 30 too. I rather like the casting, I think Ben can pull off boorish.

I think this is terrible casting! Wasn't Tom Daisy's high school/college sweetheart? I love Ben, but way too old for the role when Daisy is being played by Cary Mulligan. If it were January Jones (my number one choice for Daisy, I could see it, but not with Cary). Bradly Cooper would have been perfect. It's the same role he played in Wedding Crashers and he NAILED it there. Ben looks nice, even in his bad boy role, he comes off as a charmer, sweet guy being worse than you would believe him capable - not a football meat-head.

briggs313, Tobey is playing Nick, not Tom. Nick is the narrator/Daisy's cousin, Tom her sleazy, selfish husband. I never thought about Ben for this role, but I think he'd be great! He's really grown as an actor over the years and I think he's under-appreciated. I LOVE the casting for this movie so far, especially Carey as Daisy and that I get to see BFFs Tobey and Leo in a movie together. Now who for Myrtle, George, and Jordan?

normally i object to Ben Affleck as a serious actor but after the Town he changed my mind. What happened to Tobey McGuire playing this role? Tom is supposed to be dorky and mousy, but I suppose I can get on bored for a hot Tom aka Ben.
