Beatles Night on American Idol: Awesome or Blasphemous?

When the top 12 American Idol contestants take the stage tonight, they'll be singing Beatles songs for the first time ever in the competition. I have to say, I'm feeling torn about it. On the one hand, Beatles songs are covered so often and so much I'm becoming desensitized to it (Target's version of "Hello Goodbye" with the pun "good buy" has stopped being so irritating, for example). On the other hand, stop butchering the Beatles!

What do you think about American Idols covering the Beatles? Is it going to be interesting and cool, or totally blasphemous?

There is nothing wrong with the Beatles' music. They were overhyped, but that was not their fault. They made a lot of changes to music, and were the first rock group to become popular on a large scale. As their talents evolved, so did their music. They were very clear about their influences - Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, etc. People who have been influenced by the Beatles have also been influenced by these artists, too. The Beatles don't get all the credit. This isn't about who likes them. The producers didn't consult you people before creating this theme night.

Aussie Idol did Beatles night a few years ago and from memory it was a bit of a disaster. If they messed up they would go on about how they're to young to know the Beatles and blah blah blah...

and it's most likely the people are created rock music influenced the beatles mostly. which means they have more influence on today's music but only the beatles get credit for it. But not everyone is going to enjoy the beatles. Doesn't mean they have bad taste in music or don't appreciate their work

Anyone who says they don't care for the beatles needs to re-examine their musical influences... I guarentee the Beatles inspired ALL of them.

i don't care for american idol at all and i don't think their contestants or audience have the brains to do the beatles any justice. i used to think the beatles were overrated, but they have emerged as my favorite band. their songs are timeless and have influenced so many other artists. i can always listen to them. they have taken up so much space on my ipod, just because they can create so many different sounds

i have no clue how it did in the box office but kids between the ages of 13-21 are obsessed with this movie. It's definitely has become a cult favorite. I didn't particularly enjoy the film but people are obsessed with it.

It could be interesting but I bet they are all going to pick the songs everyone knows like "Hey Jude" and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

Ok, I was just about to chime in with my will they or won't they butcher the Beatles, but something way more important has obviously come up - WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?!?!?!?! How can anyone hate the Beatles? Seriously - I feel like I entered some weird alternate reality universe when I pressed the "View Comments" button

Yeah, it is THE BEATLES. It's nice they finally have the opportunity to sing their songs. My opinion about The Beatles won't change any just because of American Idol... The Beatles are the best rock band ever to hit America and the numbers show it. :) Peace & Love

it's not a surprise since Across the Universe was a huge hit and now a younger crowd are exposed to their music more now than ever. But... i'm scared to death they will make me hate certain songs.

i'm interested to see what some of them will pick as there is just a HUGE catalog of songs to pick from. it could suck wholly and completely or it could be as good as "Imagine" was.

OK, I know I'm like the only person in the world, but I don't care for the Beatles. (Gasp) So I probably won't like the show anyway. Sorry to offend anyone!
