I'm constantly amazed by how quickly So You Think You Can Dance sheds its dancers. Just a couple of weeks ago, we met our top 20 for the year; now, we're already down to 14. After Thursday's results show, two more dancers headed home — but which two didn't get your votes? And was it a couple leaving the competition or two halves of two different pairs? To chat about the results, just read more.
Well, not a good night for ballroom dancers on SYTYCD. After learning that Karla and Jonathan, Asuka and Vitolio, and Caitlin and Jason were in the bottom three, the six dancers performed their solos, and the judges gave us their decisions — unanimous for the girls, not unanimous for the guys.
The Girls — Caitlin's floaty solo earned praise from Nigel, who said it was the best of the night and shows that Caitlin's growing in confidence. Karla's routine had a quirky, unique style, but she seemed off-balance, and Nigel said she came off a little desperate. But that wasn't as bad as Asuka, whom Nigel called an exciting performer who somehow wasn't growing in the competition. So Karla was sent to safety, while Asuka headed home.
The Guys — Nigel had harsh words for all of the guys this week. Jason was the first sent to safety, but Nigel said he took a step back after last week's Best Solo Ever and presented a routine so full of desperation there was hardly any dancing. Nonetheless, he was the first sent to safety. Nigel said Vitolio's solo was all buildup but no delivery, and he needs to step up and start wowing everyone. Jonathan, meanwhile, once again delivered great gymnastics but isn't bringing his dancing up to the level the judges want to see, and he was sent home.

After this week's performances, I assumed Asuka and Jonathan would be the two most likely to go unless they seriously stepped things up with their solos — and after seeing them dance for their lives, I think the judges made the right call. I'm always surprised by what Jason and Vitolio deliver, love watching Caitlin, and am curious to see Karla perform with a more capable partner. Asuka, meanwhile, seemed stuck at the same level, and Jonathan just never wowed me. Are you sad to see them go? And how do you think Karla and Vitolio will work together?
Some other thoughts on Thursday's show:
- Nigel's tribute to Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson — especially the Michael Jackson part — was clearly heartfelt and emotional, especially given that he wouldn't have had much time to figure out what he wanted to say. I wish we could have seen even more of that "Thriller" clip. Nigel's right: I'm sure that inspired countless dancers (not to mention choreographers and judges) on SYTYCD over the years.
- Speaking of which, do you think Cat's outfit and hairstyle were intentionally Farrah-esque?
- I don't think I would have been able to peg that group number as a Tabitha and Napoleon routine had Cat not told us so.
- How adorable were the littlest Rage Boyz?

I'm so glad these two went home. I was pissed when Max left but I think these two are really the ones who deserved to go home.
1Auska irritated me in the last few days. I don't know why, she just did. I never remembered that Johnathan was on the show after it went of, so that was not a good look. I think Kupono or Philip will be the next guy to go and Karla will be the next.
2I definitely agree with the judges this week. Glad that Caitlin delivered on her performance. Nigel's insights into MJ's contributions to dance were honest and thoughtful.
3So glad Jonathan is off! His personality creeped me out. I'm thrilled Vitolio gets another chance and I'm excited to see how he does with Karla. Asuka wasn't very exciting and I never saw much personality from her, and I feel like Vitolio fed off her lack of personality. I think the next two to go home are Caitlin and Jason, not because they're bad dancers but because they haven't captured the audience's attention.
4Asuka has always rubbed me the wrong way, she didnt seem genuine and her dancing always seemed a bit forced.
Glad that Jonathan is gone, no more "so you think you can tumble"
5Great recap--agreed if I hadn't been told I would have NEVER known that Tabitha and Napolean did the first number. It was great though!!
I thought the right ppl went home---and felt bad for Asuka when she left (what she said about Vit. seemed so heartfelt).
I keep seeing on Pop Katie Holmes filming her stuff--when is it going to be on!??!
6Dimitri also helped with the routines.
7I didn't watch last night because I was consumed with MJ stuff, but I'm glad these two went home. I hope next week is a better show overall, this week was blah.
8I agree with superstar. None of the routines really blew me away this week. I love Philip but he really seems to struggle. His fans seem to be the only ones getting him through. For some reason, I just felt more connection to the dancers from last season. None of this season's crop has managed to really grab me... Still waiting for it to happen, although Jeanette is close.
@ Happsmjc, her cameo is reportedly going to be in the finally as a tribute to Judy Garland, I think.
9Happsmjc and bleached — I've heard it's for the finale, too
10TG! No more Asuka. My husband and I decided all she does is play with her hair - 10 times during her solo (we counted). I never thought Jonathan would make it long nor that he was as talented as the others since the beginning.
And buzz, now that I think about it - Cat's outfit/hair did seem a little Farrah-esque. Never would have thought of that unless you'd mentioned it.
11i agree that i dont seem to like this season as much as last. i liked almost everyone on last season, and hardly like any on this season
12I think the judges picked the right people to go home this time. And I also think Nigel's comments were a nice tributes to the three icons lost this week.
13I did enjoy so much more the show tonight because I thought the middle judge was so more professional . We could see her emotions without having to hear her screaming all the time.
14. So much BETTER. A lot more fun to watch. I did not feel stressed out like I notice I was the last few episodes. Thank Mary for restraining yourself. We see you more that way and appreciate you more as well.
