Director Scott Rudin has already reportedly snagged the movie rights to a new biography about Cleopatra, called Cleopatra: A Life. The book doesn't hit shelves until November, but Rudin's team is already working on the film with Angelina Jolie in mind as the Queen of the Nile. It wouldn't be the first time Jolie tackled ancient history — she played Olympias in Alexander. What's your take — can you see Jolie as Cleopatra?

I read here to many ignorant people speaking about Cleopatra as if they knew anything at all. It is known for a fact that she was of greek heritage, hence she was closer to having white skin and caucasian features. So actresses like Berry or Hayek for such a role would be disasterous. The earlier Cleopatra films portrayed her as an almost too pale beautiful woman (liz taylor, Claudette Colbert- my favorite) - surrounded by other white females, even blondes... IMO Angelina - great for the job. Could even propose more wonderful white-skinned actresses for the role, but she'd do perfect enough.

Cleopatra was Greek, and it's very unlikely to have had dark skin because royalty in Egypt used to marry incestuously in order to preserve their bloodline. Angelina Jolie isn't suitable for the role simply because she doesn't look Greek enough, not because she's fair skinned.

If Angie looked the way she did in tomb raider 1 then yes! But other wise NO! Neither Catherine, nor Halle. Someone younger with a wise voice and strong presence. Not beyonce her acting is not strong enough to play Cleo. BTW Cleo was egyptian and I knew a few. They can be fair or tanned. They are usually very tanned if living back home where the sun is always blazing. But in ancient times - I believe they tried to avoid getting too dark at lease royalty. They spent most of their time being shaded or inside the coolness of the palace. I would say Jessica Alba...but her presence is not strong enough for a role of power. Angelina is... Scarlett with a tan and black hair....Natalie?...Eva Mendez...Monica Bellucci

To argue the history of human kind is not what we are discussing here if so we are all "fish" and than amphibians, because that is where life began in the sea. Depending in your your beliefs is either God or evolution. The Ptolemaic dynasty married within their family, brothers to sisters, uncles to nieces, fathers and daughters and so forth as most royals throughout history. Cleopatra VII did not have "some Greek heritage" she was all of Macedonian heritage ie: Greek. HoneyBrown, you are making this into a race issue. American Institution of higher learning has not "overzealously white-wash and it should never be considered as truth". THIS IS A HISTORICAL FACT AND THEREFORE THE TRUTH AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO EXTREME RESEARCH. Yes, the region was mixed but then as now ROYALTY did NOT mix with commoners. Cleopatra VII by all accounts from the historians of that time credited her of being Greek from Macedonia. But you are correct in saying that Nefertiti (1370BC-1330BC) was dark-skinned her genealogical history is not fully known it is considered the she may have had Ethiopian blood. Why does race always have to be an issue?

Sandyfeet, everyone's of African heritage. Caucasian heritage is a subset. HellooQueen, while she did have some Greek heritage, it is extremely likely it wasn't the sole one given that her family ruled for 300 years. Be mindful that a lot of "history" (especially in American institutions of learning) is overzealously white-washed and should never be considered truth without extreme research. That region was quite mixed. So, the likelihood for fair-skin is implausible, even for Greeks. Nefertiti was definitely darker-skinned.

I agree with SandyFeet. Cleopatra VII was most likely fair skinned and of Greek descent. Her dynasty, the Ptolemaic dynasty, were of Greek ancestry, not Egyptian or African. I'm a History major, and we discussed Cleopatra in my Greek History class. Sorry, but Cleopatra VII was not black. You may have been thinking of Nefertiti, who may have had darker skin.

Cleopatra VII Philopator, was the last person to rule Egypt as a pharaoh, after her death Egypt became a Roman Province. She was the daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes and Cleopatra V Tryphaena of Egypt both of Macedonian ethnicity was neither African nor black but very much of Caucasian heritage. True and simple history and as far as Angelina being cast for this part is very plausible since she is a much better actor than Berry or Jones. The only draw back IMO is that Cleopatra was younger than Angelina.

actually if anyone of you had done your research you would know that Cleopatra was of the Ptolemy dynasty, and they are of Macedonian decent. JUST BECAUSE SHE RULED AFRICA DOESN'T MEAN SHE'S BLACK! The ptolemy dynasty were known for being xenophobes and would marry incestuously to preserve bloodlines. That said, Cleopatra could have looked anything from Maraiah Carey to yes you guessed it Elizabeth Taylor

Ist choice should be Halle Berry, Oscar winner, gorgeous woman and yea, black, so she can actually represent an African queen. My 2nd choice (if we're going to be completely color blind) Monica Bellucci, she'll also be perfect as Cleopatra. She's definitely way more beautiful than Angelina, a far better actress and she can pass as African with her "mediterranean" look. Voting for Angelina solely for her "box office appeal" is a total cop out! Just sayin...

While I totally agree that a pale-skinned Cleopatra isn't historically accurate, I think Angie has that certain something that embodies what Cleopatra was. Powerful, intelligent, mysterious...Angie has a certain vibe about her.
