What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

There are a few trends in this week's crop of new DVDs.

There are a few trends in this week's crop of new DVDs. First of all, two of the three picks are re-tellings of classic films. Secondly, it's clear that Halloween is just around the corner, which means there are more scary movies heading to DVD.

The Karate Kid

In this reboot of the beloved 1984 classic, Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan replace Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. Smith plays Dre, an adolescent who moves to China with his mother and instantly falls victim to the bullies at school. Seeking help with self defense, he finds a mentor and friend in Mr. Han, who teaches Dre everything he knows about martial arts. I thought the film didn't hold a candle to the original, but it proved to be a hit at the box office. DVD extras include a making-of special featurette.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger's back in this remake of the 1984 horror film about the hideously scarred pedophile who haunts the dreams of local teenagers. The updated version stars Jackie Earle Haley as Krueger, with Rooney Mara, Kellan Lutz, and Katie Cassidy running for their lives and fighting sleep deprivation. Horror flick aficionado FabSugar enjoyed the film and appreciated the dream sequences, but noted that it's not quite as scary as the original. DVD extras include deleted scenes and an alternate ending.

Box Office: Iron Man 2 Skyrockets to No. 1

Robert Downey Jr. can add yet another film to his long list of successes: Iron Man 2.

Robert Downey Jr. can add yet another film to his long list of successes: Iron Man 2. The film handily earned the top spot at the box office this weekend with an impressive $133.6 million — that makes it the fifth-highest opening gross in Hollywood history! The weekend earnings also bested that of the original Iron Man, which raked in $98.6 million for its opening weekend back in 2008.

Obviously that means that last week's champ A Nightmare on Elm Street fell to second place with only $9.1million in ticket sales (sorry, Freddy). It was followed by How to Train Your Dragon in third with $6.7 million, Date Night in fourth with $5.3 million, and The Back-up Plan in fifth with $4.3 million.

Box Office: Freddy Terrorizes the Competition

Proof that people love a good scare: despite what the critics said, A Nightmare on Elm Street easily won the box office race over the weekend, bringing in $32.2 million.

Proof that people love a good scare: despite what the critics said, A Nightmare on Elm Street easily won the box office race over the weekend, bringing in $32.2 million. It's the second highest opening in the film's nine-movie franchise, only behind 2003's Freddy vs. Jason. Coming in a distant second was last week's champ, How to Train Your Dragon, which earned $10.8 million.

Date Night held onto its third place spot with $7.6 million, while The Back-up Plan dropped to fourth with $7.4 million. Finishing out the top five was Brendan Frasier's family film Furry Vengeance which eked out a measly $6.5 million for its debut.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: For Freddy Fans (Only)

This movie review comes from my girl FabSugar, who's a horror movie enthusiast and expert.

This movie review comes from my girl FabSugar, who's a horror movie enthusiast and expert.

I am an Elm Street junkie. Freddy is my all-time favorite monster, I own the Nightmare on Elm Street Collection, and I have a backup Freddy Krueger Halloween costume ready and willing. When Buzz revealed a remake was in the works, I was skeptical, as any expert would be.

The new A Nightmare on Elm Street is entertaining for non Freddy fans, and exciting for Freddy fans. I viewed the movie with two people who'd never seen the original. Their general thoughts were: the opening scene rocks (really draws you in), Freddy isn't very scary, there are more jumps than actual chills, the performances from the young cast aren't half bad, and the closing scene rocks, too.

Meet the New Krueger: Jackie Earle Haley

I haven't seen more perfect casting than this in a long time: Jackie Earle Haley will replace Robert Englund in the role of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

I haven't seen more perfect casting than this in a long time: Jackie Earle Haley will replace Robert Englund in the role of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Haley has played some mighty creepy roles in recent years, like the pedophile in the 2006 drama Little Children and eerie masked avenger Rorschach in Watchmen. Director Samuel Bayer even mentions Haley's work as Rorschach as specific reasoning for this casting:

"Looking at his performance in Watchmen, here’s a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him," said Bayer of the actor. "And in Nightmare, he is going to be under prosthetic makeup. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character."

Bayer, who called this take of Krueger "Nosferatu meets Ed Gaines," is not afraid that Hayley is in any danger of being typecast the way Englund was. “It’s what you bring to the material. He’s a well-rounded actor who will not be stereotyped by this. If anything, he’ll be celebrated for it.”

Well, if they have to keep remaking movies, at least some of the casting is spot-on. I'm happy for Haley, as I think he could potentially play any number of creepy characters and I think he'll do justice to this classic role. What do you think of this news? Could Jackie Earle Haley be the stuff of nightmares?
