This season, it seems like Project Runway has become one big advertisement. Last night it was Levi's, last week it was TRESemme, and before that there was Hershey's and Bitten. Don't get me wrong, these have been some of my favorite challenges, but come on. We don't need to see a brand-name challenge every week, right?
Off my soapbox, onto the episode. With Levi's at the helm, the designers were given the challenge to create an iconic denim look that captured the spirit of the brand using jeans as the raw material.

More blue than the jeans was the designers' collective mood about Christian, whose immature ways are finally getting to the group. After disagreeing with Christian about how to clean dirty denim, Chris snarked to the camera that it's "so cute to see youth," and "somebody needs to give him a bottle and send him to bed." Love it, and again, it made me glad that Chris is back; he's definitely the most lively of the bunch. I mean, who else talks to the garments? Jillian was less lively (surprise) but she did actually express a bit of emotion when she cut herself at the sewing machine. Not that I want her hurt, but it was good to finally see some drama in her corner.
To find out more about the Levi's advertisement episode (including one of my favorite Tim Gunn quotes ever), and to see a gallery of all of the looks from last night's Project Runway, read more.
As the designers only had one day to finish this challenge, Tim's ever-so-sage advice was desperately needed. He was mainly worried about Chris, who applied a denim sash on the side of his dress; Victorya, whose trench was a little too patchworky; and Sweet P, who was making a denim wedding dress (obviously, problemo numero uno). Of that dress, Tim said it looked "very happy hands at home granny circle" — an instant Gunn classic. He also told Jillian that her coat needed some work. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Tim thought Ricky's look was "stunning," and Rami's look had the potential of "blowing everybody away." Edited out was Tim's advice to Christian, who had immunity anyway. Does it seem to anyone else that, with the exception of Sweet P, the designers aren't really paying attention to Sir Gunn's feedback this season?
Onto the runway. You know we're getting closer to the end when Heidi wants to grill each of the designers on the catwalk. As such, we got to hear about the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The Good:
- Christian: Christian continues to impress the judges. This week he was the only one with two pieces: skinny jeans and a denim jacket. I thought the jeans were amazing, especially since they fit the model perfectly. I didn't like the jacket — or the weird white T-shirt bulge between the jacket and jeans — but the judges didn't seem to have a problem with it.
- Rami: Rami also continues to churn out stunning looks. Nina called his dress sharp, clean, well done, and "very sophisticated, as always." Unless Rami creates something disastrous in the next couple of weeks, he'll surely be showing at Bryant Park with this much adoration from the judges.
- Sweet P: Sweet P really took Tim's advice to heart, shortening her long wedding catastrophe into an incredibly chic, short strapless dress. Sweet P was the only designer to really play with different colors of denim, and she did so with impeccable taste. I truly thought she should have won.
- Ricky: Unfortunately, and surprisingly to me, the win went to Ricky. He also made a strapless dress that the judges thought showed off his background in lingerie, and Nina even said the dress "is what we've been expecting from your work." True, but doesn't that prove that he should have been eliminated eons ago? Regardless, Ricky started crying again, and Heidi asked him point blank "What's up with you?" Finally, someone mentions the waterworks! If you're interested in buying one of my least-favorite looks from the episode, you can do so on the Levi's website.
The Bad:
- Chris: Chris, who decided not to take Tim's advice (tsk tsk), got reamed for his "little blue dress." The judges thought it was dated, not finished, and home sewn. Even though it wasn't my favorite, I didn't hate it as much as the judges, and honestly, I think Chris is showing great restraint since his elimination and subsequent return. We'll have to wait and see how long he lasts.
- Victorya: Victorya, who I had my eye on, will sadly no longer be seen on ProjRun. The judges faulted her jacket, which looked as if she hadn't deconstructed it at all. Heidi commented that it looked like she didn't have much to do. Michael Kors thought the bottom looked like a separate skirt and that it didn't complement the jacket. I can't really disagree, but still: Victorya, you will be missed.
The Ugly:
- Jillian: Onto who really should have been eliminated last night: Jillian. Her jacket was a much uglier version of what Victorya created, except hers had too much going on and was unflattering on her model. Why Jillian wasn't auffed last night is beyond me.
What do you guys think? Am I being too harsh on Jillian? Are you as sad about Victorya as I am? Now that we're getting closer to the end, who do you think the final three will be? And is it any surprise that Ricky makes his own hats?

THANK GOODNESS VICTORYA IS GONE!!! Man, I could NOT stand her from the beginning! Plus, I felt so sorry for Jillian for some reason last night, so I'm really glad she is getting another chance. And o course, Christian rocked. I read Tim Gunn's blog on Bravotv.com and it was so funny because even he was shocked by Ricky's win. I just can't stand his crying!!! He cries when he loses and cries when he wins ... really hope he gets kicked off next. I was really shocked when Nina Garcia supported his design - she's usually the harshest. His garment just did not seem "iconic" at ALL. I'd definitely buy Sweet P's design than Ricky's ... to me, Ricky's seemed very Baby Phat and not very Levi's. Boooo!!!
1SWEET P GOT ROBBED. I loved her dress; it was so great how she used the different shades of denim to create a color blocked look. I was especially pissed when I found out Levis.com is selling the winning dress! I want Sweet P's dress! I would have bought it in a second. Ricky's dress is much less wearable if you aren't a model.
I am completely over Christian and his stupid hair and his giant ego. Liked his jeans, hated the jacket. But the judges adore him so we're stuck with him.
2bigestivediscuit, I am SO with you on Victorya. I cheered when she got the auf.
3I'm glad Victorya is gone! Seriously, Ricky should go next and that win should've gone to Christian. It was interesting how no one else used the white fabric provided to them. I loved Tim's "Hippy Dippy" comment when talking to Sweet P.
4christian should have won because
a) he had immunity yet did not rest on that and produced a stunning outfit
b) he was the ONLY designer to do new jeans, which were amazing
c) he is adorable
5"very happy hands at home granny circle" I agree Tim at his finest. HA! Between Jillian and Victorya I could not decide who had less personality, which of course doesn't damper their talent, but makes for pretty boring TV. Rami for some reason as talented as he is still irks me. and of course Ricky - HIlarious...poor lad.
6I'm glad Vyctoria is gone, and that someone noticed her doing virtually the same design as Jillian, as her winning prom dress is eerily similar to a Mychael Knight creation that showed up on My Super Sweet 16 (evidence here: http://jezebel.com/343485/copy-cats).
How fitting that both members of Team Icy and Cold wound up in the bottom two this week for simply doing denim rehases of last week's design near-winning design.
7I second all of the comments above. I was just so sad to see Ricki do well this week, since I was really hoping that it would the week where he finally went away and stopped sobbing all over the runway.
8Can someone tell me why Tim is still only on for about 4 minutes each episode? We need more Tim!!
9i couldn't disagree with you more, buzz. i thought victorya's creation was way worse than jillian's. at least jillian tried to make something; victorya just sewed some fabric onto the bottom of the jacket...it didn't even match. i also hated sweet p's dress. i thought christian or rami should have won.
10I'm so glad Victorya is gone... she was arrogant and obnoxious, and I wasn't all that into her designs.
I can't say I even have a favorite this season - I haven't really been able to get into it. Seasons 2 & 3 were just so good.
11Hear, hear to all you ladies! I *hated* Victorya — saying nothing of her design skills, she misdiagnosed her ineffectual aggressive b*tchiness as "competition" AND she had a completely distasteful way of claiming other peoples' ideas and suggestions as her own! Thank goodness she got kicked off!
In other news, I am so in love with Jillian — this week wasn't her best, but I think she rocks.
Christian ALWAYS does skinny jeans, cropped jackets, fitted sleeves, and the same detailed collar/neckline. i think he's extremely talented and very fashion-smart, but he's also a middle school brat.
This challenge was uber-lame, that celebrity judge was not of the usual caliber.
12Buzz, you've got to be kidding about Jillian. yeah, hers definitely deserved to be in the bottom three, but she actually MADE SOMETHING. Vitorya did absolutely nothing, and as Chris said, most of the other designers could have made her coat in two hours. That's why she was auffed. Come on now, think about it.
13Karla Sugar, you're dead-on about Christian. He keeps making the same outfit – it's a cute outfit, but if Rami can't drape his way into every win, Christian can't skinny-jean his way into every win either.
The fact that he rolled his eyes when he didn't win just pissed me off. He needs to grow up.
14i agreee that victorya should have been sent home. there was no design. yes jillian's was OVER designed, but atleast she put some thought into it.
i read tim gunn's blog, and they editted out everything negative he said ( a lot ) about ricky's dress. he said it was unfinished, and resembled rami's and chris' dresses. tsk tsk on THAT! but i guess it wouldn't make sense for tim to lay it out on ricky and then him have the same dress that walks down the runway and wins. go figuuuure!!
p.s I LOOOVE SWEET P!
15I have to agree with the other commenters- Victorya's outfit was by far the worst last night. Overall I was more surprised by Ricky and Sweet P... I have been rooting for them to go home every week, but this week I thought they both made great pieces.
Also, I agree with Karla Sugar when she said "Christian ALWAYS does skinny jeans, cropped jackets, fitted sleeves, and the same detailed collar/neckline." Christian makes great stuff, but almost all of his outfits look identical to each other!
16i think they are editting christian to be a lot worst than he is. all of the other designers like him. i think he is just getting a bad wrap. he is very talented.
agree with roxy 17... something about rami... ugh!
17I just read Tim's blog on Bravo and was very interested to see that his comment "It's stunning" in regards to Ricky's dress was actually edited from his ACTUAL comment, “Fix all of this and make certain that it’s stunning.” He actually hated the dress!
18Buzz, we disagree on this one.
19At least Jillian was inventive about her coat, Victorya on the other side she only added a skirt to that jacket.
I am hoping that Rami,Jillian and Christian will go to Bryant Park. And the ones that need to get auff'ed ASAP is Ricky and Sweet P.
victorya was rightly sent home-even though she won 2 previous challenges. the way she micromanaged Ricky when they were partnered up but was too chicken to be team leader showed was a jerk she was. last weeks awesome coat was all Jillian's idea. Jillian didn't deserve to go home for hers being too ambitious while Vic's was not ambitious at all and ugly. I found it funny when Vic said she didn't have enough matching pieces, since she was so bossy and territorial to Chris when they were getting the jeans in the beginning.
Jillian doesn't have enough time to complete any of her looks, but the judges usually love them, so why WOULDN'T she be ambitious every challenge? I hope she goes to the end because I think her collection would be great.
I love Chris and was glad to see him stay. I think Christian should have won. Credit to Sweet Pea though for really listening to Tim. I think the judges were smoking something for picking Ricky's-ugh! I think the judges are looking to elimiate Sweet Pea but she keeps coming up big, so they can't. Kind of like Ulli last year.
20Ding dong. Victorya is gone! I have seriously disliked her since that team challenge where basically she bashed Ricky in front of the judges (the one where they take fashion mishaps and turn into something good or whatever). I seriously thought, considering all the praise that was heaped onto Sweet P she was going to win. But yay! Victorya is gone!
21I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who was thrilled that Victorya went home. She never seems to "get" the challenges, or really try anything inventive.
(Although, I'm a little peeved that Ricky's still around. Even if I do sorta like his dress. Of course, it's the ONLY thing I've liked that he's worked on - also, it's the only thing that looked like a finished garment)
22i agree with the general consensus: sweet pea rocked this time around with her dress and ricki shouldn't have won--though i was pretty excited to see the first tears drop. i was curious to see where and how soon in the competition the tears would appear.
while christian is annoying at times and totally arrogant, the kid is justified. he's very talented. not just with his work but with the quality and amount he can do. in the same amount of time as everyone else he was able to pull together 3 pieces! and the jacket and jeans were both very intricate.
i'm glad victorya is gone.
23I heart Sweet Pea.
24I could not stand Victorya! Her and Ricky were the two people I was really hoping one of whom would be eliminated this week.
Sweet P's dress was gorgeous! I would definitely buy it before I even looked at Ricky's.
25i really thought that victorya was going to be in the final episode becuase she's really a good designer...but now i'm guessing it will be rami, jillian, and ......christian maybe.
26I'm SO glad Victorya is gone. Surprised about Ricky's win (I liked Sweet P's best), but I love seeing Christian disappointed- he thinks he should win every week....
27hated victorya.....she was so snotty about everything, and never really wowed me.
i love christian, but i think he and jillian were fighting for "most middle school" of the night....her whining about how "annoying" victorya making a jacket was....and christian whining about having to "deconstruct."
ricky makes his own hats = ricky needs TO GO!!!!
28I agree, I loved Sweet P's dress & really thought it showed a lot of creativity w/the different colors and the fact that it was slimming is, of course, always a plus! Ricky's was nice, but def not the best!
I liked Christian's jeans but not the jacket either and think Chris was hilarious while mocking him, Chris is my favorite, personality & sometimes design-wise too!
I thought Jillian's jacket was worse, but glad to see Victoria gone, she had a really bad personality on the show...very blah and sometimes unfriendly..what was with her calling Sweet P Kit a bunch of times?!
Glad no more immunity - Ricky has GOT to go, or at least quit crying!
29I just saw the designs close up (at the Levis offices) and I can tell you, sweet peas was definitely the cleanest looking/ most professional design. Christian's jacket was hideous but the pants are cool. Jillians was also awful. Rickys dress is okay in person, pretty much like it looked on TV. Chris's looked better. Remmies somehow made the material look like polyester. I didnt like it at all.
30I'm so glad Victorya is gone!
31i agree with Buzz about Ricky. where was all this 'talent' before? he should have been gone long ago!
32Just when I thought we'd go ONE episode without watching Ricky cry.....BLAM! Slap a win on him and he's bawling like a kid that dropped his ice cream cone.
I was so glad Victorya left. She was obnoxious and self-serving. I don't even sew and I could've made that jacket/dress thing.
I love Christian. And I know he makes "skinny jeans and jackets" all the time...but they wanted something ICONIC. What's more iconic for Levi's than jeans and a jean jacket? He should've won. And I'm glad he didn't slack off even with immunity.
Sweet Pea's dress was very pretty and I'm glad she wasn't eliminated! She was definitely robbed.
33Haha...evidently I can't decide who I wanted to win!
34I think Sweet P was robbed too. I thought her daring to use more than one shade of denim was genius, compared to Ricky's dress which looked a lot like other things I've seen in stores before, and just didn't seem as creative. I think Sweet P's fit much better too.
Am I the only one who doesn't get the whole skinny-jean cropped jacket thing? I mean, sometimes Christian does it and it looks good, but with this challenge it just seems so unflattering! It breaks up the body in such an odd way, and does not compliment the female form at all.
35Oh and thank you Sunday Sun for the revelation about what Tim actually said to Ricky! I know they often do stuff like this, but it shocks me that they'd even consider twisting Tim Gunn's words!
36And thank you as well to Fieryelectra for providing that link. That dress was a total rip off of Michael Knight's, there's no question. I'm so glad Victorya is gone.
So lets see... Ricky finally won and I was shocked he did win not shocked he cried AGAIN! His look was dated. I'm not surprised Christian didn't win because if they were to sell the winning look on the Levis website there was NO WAY any real woman would of fit in those skinny jeans with no stretch in them. C'mon lets at least be real about that one. I was hoping for a Sweet P win. This season is definitely one of the toughest.
37Victorya has always bugged me
38I HATE Ricky!!!!!!! He is such a baby!!!!!!! I thought Rami and Sweet Pea's outfits were the best. I also don't like Victoria and have really not liked many of her previous outfits either. She is always making the same plaint babydoll dress in different colors and with different embelishments. Blah....
39Why do they keep letting Ricky stay? so now that he won the challenge he will be there an extra week.
I thought Sweet P, should have won he outfit was cute but i also liked Christian's as well. And i liked Chris' outfit. Something he goes extreme but this one was something i would have maybe wore.
And thanks buzz for writing that levi was there for advertising. No one wear levi's anymore.
40I liked Christian's and Rami's looks the best. I'm glad Victorya is gone-- she was a b*tch. I am REALLY sick of Jillian's monotone voice and complaining. She works soooo slow and it always seems like she's the last one done and still not finished. I love Chris's personality. I wish he would be my friend.
And we do need more Tim!! He's the best thing about ProjRun!
41Ha! No, the homemade hats are no surprise at all! I kept asking myself, what is up with Ricky's hats!
42I liked Ricky's look, although I was surprised that he won won. I also agree he probably should have been eliminated by now, I'm just thinking back to him prom dress which was pretty awful!
I really liked Christian's look. He was the only one who actually made jeans and I thought that they were cute. True the jacket wasn't exactly ready to wear but I thought it worked with the whole outfit.
And I didn't like Sweet Pea's dress at all, but it was mostly b/c I'm not a fan of the whole patchwork thing in general.
I do think they eliminated the right person though, at least if you just base it on that challenge, which is what they do. Jillian's coat was ugly, but at least she tried to make it fashion forward. Victorya might have had better clothes than Jillian in the past, but that coat she made was truly awful. I agree it just looked thrown together and frumpy.
43Soooo glad Victorya is gone. All four of us watching it together cheered. Never cared for her or her work...I laughed out loud at Christian's reaction at not winning. He smiled right before they said the winner and looked really mad. He's a baby...Ricky's dress was okay, but I loved Rami and Sweet P's so much more. Should he really have won for best improved? And I can't believe they edited Tim's comment! So not cool...
44Am I the only one that HATED SweetP's dress? It still looked hippy and homespun to me. The silhouette was nice, but the mix or dark and light denim was more hippy chick dated than iconic! As for Victorya, she didn't even deconstruct the jacket! Yes, Jillian's was ugly and way, way too busy. But at least didn't make a jacket out of a jacket! Plus, why did it take Victorya all that time to do so little? I don't think Rami got the praise he should have. That dress was fierce! As for Ricki, I'm just glad he now has something new to cry about.
45I have to agree with all of you. Victorya seemed to design against the female form with her dowdy sack drasses, and she was such a snot to the other designers. Sweet P and Chris are my fave personalities, and I thought Sweet P did such a fabulous job at editing her work. The gradations of blue was really stunning.
And yeah, I'm sick of the advertising episodes, too!
46SO glad Victorya is gone she is the epitome of a passive aggressive biotch!!!
47Jillian is usually good and I DO NOT think she should have gotten eliminated last night. First of all, she's right Victorya did copy her style and if you noticed, that little belt thing around the dress was taken from Rami's Hershey's dress! VERY uncreative. I'm so glad she got voted off!
48I agreed with the judges (and others) that Victorya's design was lacking in anything good or inspiring and deserved to be booted. Ricky is so whiny and I was sad he wasn't auf'd, I do think that Victorya could have shown us more interesting stuff later on.
And Sweet P was TOTALLY robbed...anyone who can make a multi-toned all denim dress look great DESERVES A WIN.
49I hated Ricky's look. I'm not a fan of denim dresses, and his definitely embodied what I don't like about them - they often look very cheap. Sweet P's was different though.. I think it was the way she patterned the colors. It didn't look as much like denim to me.
