While I kind of loved Zac Efron in Hairspray, I have mixed feelings about him in certain roles, like the main one in a remake of Footloose, say. Today there's news of more Efron casting, this time in a dramatic role: he's been tapped to play the lead in an independently financed film adaptation of Me and Orson Welles.
It looks like a pretty serious turn for Zac and what's more — there does not appear to be any singing or dancing. He clearly has the kind of charisma that works in upbeat musicals, but I'm not sure he can be taken more seriously than that. So I'm wondering: Can you see Zac in a role without the spontaneous bursts into song and dance?

I'm opend minded......and he's really pretty btw.
1He looks just like a boy-version of Mischa Barton here. Too pretty.
2Take him seriously in a song-free role?? I can't take him seriously period. Hopefully he'll learn and grow by leaps and bounds over the years. He just doesn't seem to have the acting chops to me. But, practice makes perfect right?
3There is just something really wrong about remaking Footloose...
4He freaks me out. Whenever I see the High School Musical kids, I tell myself that JTT and Andrew Keegan and Co. were NORMAL teeny bopper boys, not creepily feminine looking.
5Yeah, as someone above mentioned, I can't even take him seriously now. There's just something about him... I honestly laugh whenever I see his picture.
6I have to say - I AM A SUCKER FOR THE SINGING BOY! This goes far back to the days of Newsies... anyone? anyone? I think Zac and his people just need to accept that most women and gay men can only handle his ridiculous hair and makeup BECAUSE of the singing... he just needs to own it... and ride out this musical thing as long as humanly possible... NEWSIES REMAKE PLEASE?!?!?!?!?
7he was a pretty good actor in summerland, so i think he'll do fine, and even if we dont take him seriously millions of 8 year olds everywhere will flock to see his movies
8We'll see, I can barely take him seriously in HSM and I reckon Hairspray was a fluke.
9i think as much as he wants to break into more serious, dramatic acting, the truth is that he's just much more suited to those singing dancing roles where he's allowed to be pretty and charismatic. he doesn't really have the acting ability to carry movies that don't allow him to do that.
10I have to say that I'm completely charmed by him. I don't think HSM is a good measuring stick for his talent, it was T.V. fluff just as it was supposed to be. I think that his acting evolved a lot for Hairspray and I'm looking forward to seeing him branch out into more serious roles. I can't help it, I'm a sucker for him!!
11like sarebear said, he was pretty good in summerland...although i cant really say i take him seriously right now..with all that make up...
12Um... he was in the Lifetime movie "Miracle Run", and that, and Hairspray, are the only two things I like him in, so I'd rather see him not "singing", and just acting.
13i agree with all the people who said they couldnt take him seriously in the first place..........and yes, annbreal, JTT and Devon Sawa, etc were all normal teeny bopper and yes Zac Efron is really feminine looking and too creepy with his porcelain doll like features.
14my boyfriend was really pissed off because i said "i hate when people say hes gay because he wears makeup, their is like rocker dudes wearing eye shadow and eyeliner but they are not gay. and hes clearly with VanessaHudgens" and he said "QUIT DEFENDING HIM! I HATE HIM! HE IS GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY AND YOU WILL NEVER GET A CHANCE WITH HIM..OK........AND QUIT LOOKING AT HIS PICTURES!"
lol... well, someone was a little jelous of nothing big. the only pic i looked at was the one in this post. THATS IT.
15oh yea.. about his acting...we might be surprised if he does good...i never really seen him act, i have never watched any of the HSM's.................it bores me.
16Hah maybe if he stops wearing foundation and getting highlights, I'll think of him as an actor instead of a kid who wears makeup better than me..
17I can't take him seriously now. I mean, I just can't respect a man/boy who wears more foundation than I do. Just sayin'
18I've never taken him seriously and I don't think I ever will
19If he would show up to one event, minus the make up & that posing thing he does, I might be able to see him in a serious role.
I feel bad for saying that, though. It should be ok for him to do the make up & fierce posing. If that's what he likes, then it should be ok. He could probably give me some great make up tips & that's fine too.
I would rather see a guy's guy, not so much a girlie guy. Just my preference...!
20I think he's got potential as a serious actor. He's still really young and hasn't done a lot of professional acting, so it will be interesting to see how he does in the Orson Welles pic.
21He's got potential for sure, but I think he needs to take on some more serious roles to show audiences that he's not just a teeny bopper actor.
22no - i can't take him seriously period. i just think about all the promoting that he did for hairspray with his oompa loompa skin. it was too much - and i see him as being a flash in the pan.
i'm game for him to prove me wrong - but i just can't take him seriously
23i saw him in summerland and really liked him in that because he was cute with a tiny little gap in his teeth. but after high school musical, he started to get too pretty and now when i see him in pictures (like the one above) i laugh really hard because it looks like hes trying too hard to be the cool guy everyone loves. plus, the only reason why hes getting these roles is not because of his acting, its because hes the justin timberlake of the new generation and teen girls will see just about anything with him in it. and so far he only plays the popular guy who struggles with it sometimes.
24I barely know who Zac Efron is.
25I think he gets by on his good looks. Let's face it, the boy is pretty. I don't think he can act & have a hard time taking him seriously. In the end it doesn't even matter 'cause millions of little girls will watch anything he does even if he can't act.
26Oldie but goodie movies should be left ALONE!
I don't think that Zac Efron needs to sing or act. And I wonder when he's going to feel comfortable enough to come on out of that closet?
Zac looks and acts so female to me.
27I recently saw a movie on Lifetime with Zac in it and its old, but he played an autistic teenager and he was really good. So, I'm sure he can act.
28i'll take him seriously when he jumps out that abercrombie filled closet of his.
29I think he's been type-casted
30Maybe with a LOT less make-up!
31He's only semi-talented, but too much of a pretty boy, (Jessica Alba was right!)
32so HOT!!! also listin up PEOPLE ZAC DOES NOT WEAR MAKE UP THATS JUST A STUPID ROMOR, i don't even know where people come up with the makeup stuff, he does not even look like he's wearing any!! Also i think he's a great actor and i think seventeen going to show you that!
33he's so hot but,... I can't take him serious , not at this moment
