Cormac McCarthy's novel No Country for Old Men has proven so successful in movie format, there's already another film in pre-production based on another of his works, The Road. Variety is reporting today that Charlize Theron has signed on for the project, and will star alongside Viggo Mortensen. Apparently, Theron is a huge fan of the novel. Here's more:
Story centers on a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals. Theron, who will play the wife of Mortensen's character, will be seen mostly in flashback. Although the role is small, Theron joined the project because she's a big fan of the book.
I haven't read the book — yet! — but I know from my recent Buzzworthy challenge that some of you are fans of this McCarthy work. Can you see these casting picks working for the film?

Melrose
French Connection
D&G
I think both actors will do a great job. I'm more interested in seeing who they cast as the son though.
1i love love viggo ever since Eastern promises,, that movie wowed me!!
2So exciting!
I agree with divinelight (and love her pic btw) about how the son will be critical. I didn't picture the wife as someone as beautiful as charlize but i guess she did manage to pull off monster with ease. I remember reading this book and just wondering how they could make this into a novel and really express that bond between father and son. if people hated the ending of no country for old men, they might hate this one too.
3Go Viggo! He is god and can do anything. I guess Charlize will work-- I had forgotten the wife was even in it, and was trying to figure out who she would be. I wonder who they will cast as the son. But it doesn't really matter because Viggo can do no wrong.
4My thoughts thank god Charlize is in flashback lol I don't care for her work but Viggo is who I was thinking about when I read the book. I can't wait to see who they cast as the son better be good. I didn't mind the ending to No Country actually but this ending better be like the book I though it was awesome & moving as hell.
5I am just not sure that I am feeling it. I read the book. It was ok but not great (in my opinion). I was moved by the bond between the father and the son and the sense of hope it gave. I even shed a tear at the end of the book. I read the book when I knew Viggo was cast as the dad and I could see him in that role... He will be awesome as usual. Charlize is ok, I like her, but I think she is a tad too pretty for the role even in flashbacks. The casting of the son will be interesting too. I might have to go back and read the book again just to see if I can picture them all in the roles but the bottom line for me is that I don't know how it will translate to the big screen. Hopefully without providing too many spoliers here, the book doesn't go into gory details about the cannibalism. You know it is happening but it isn't "in your face." You know what I mean? I just have iffy feelings about the movie. Being a Viggo fan, I will probably go see it but I have a feeling I'll leave the theater a bit nauseated.
6This sounds interesting. I loved No Country, and I like Viggo & Charlize so I'll check this out.
7liza0183, what do you mean you don't care for her work? Do you mean her acting, or movies? Charlize is a brilliant actress, especially her work in the last 5 years. Viggo is incredibly lucky to be working with her, and honestly its been a fantasy of mine for years to see the two of them working together. I can't believe its coming true!!! When I saw the headlines, I was on cloud nine!!!!! My two faves! She's in his league in EVERY way possible!!!
8I sure hope this isn't true, I'd love to see Viggo Mortensen play this role, and it seems in my mind, no one else will. However, I saw that the date on that article was last year's november, so maybe Viggo will play that part.
9meh, I destroyed the link XP here's the article link again:
