By an incredibly small margin (in Hollywood terms, anyway), The Bucket List was No. 1 at the box office over the weekend, just barely beating out First Sunday for the top slot. According to Variety, this is the biggest opening yet for director Rob Reiner. Also, 70% of ticket buyers were over 35 years of age.

Coming in at No. 3 was Juno moving down just one place after actually coming in at No. 2 last weekend. National Treasure: Book of Secrets fell to No. 4 with Alvin and the Chipmunks rounding out the top five.
This upcoming holiday weekend we'll see the girlish romcom 27 Dresses go up against J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield and the bank heist comedy Mad Money.

I have to smile at the incredulous comments about the Bucket List coming in the the #1 spot this week. What? A movie like this can't be successful? There was also this note -

Horrors! "Old people" at the movie theater! Imagine that!
When Hollywood realizes there is an audience for movies not aimed at the 12-20 age group, they will find a whole untapped audience willing to come back to the theater again. I -loved- the Bucket List, despite what the critics say.
I haven't been in a theater for months given the dismal lineup that's been offerred. When I saw the previews for the Bucket List and that Nicholson and Freeman were the leads, I knew they'd finally come up with something worth seeing. I was not dissapointed.
C'mon Hollywood! Start making more movies for an older audience and you'll find a new market! BTW - I'm 53.
1Amen Truelight. I liked that comment.
2I agree, Truelight
3Incredulous comments? Where? I'm not sure how you're reading into this in that way. I certainly didn't imply "Horrors! 'Old people' at the movie theater! Imagine that!"
4Buzz, I'm with you on this one (and I'm in the well-over-35 age group)! Nothing wrong with reporting demographics--as did Variety and other sources. Ah, well...
