As the writers' strike seems to have no clear end in sight, now might be a good time to start a book club! There are so many books I've been meaning to read for ages, and I think a book club might be just the thing to make me sit down and read them. Now I just need some suggestions.
Some books that I think would generate great discussion — especially among women — include Elizabeth Gilbert's fabulous memoir Eat, Pray, Love, and the biblically-set novel The Red Tent. I also think it might be beneficial to check out some of the books that are about to be made into movies, since it's often hard to read the books after having seen the movie.
I'd suggest Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees (soon to star Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah) and the classic novel Revolutionary Road (opening in December with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the lead roles).
What book club books are your favorites? If you're a seasoned book club member, what would you suggest for all different levels of book club members (beginners, intermediates, advanced readers)? Just use BuzzSugar's cool bookmarking tool to find your favorites online, write a little blurb about why you think they make good fodder for book clubs, and tag them with the phrase book club books. Next week I'll feature some of the books here so we can all get our reading lists ready for the coming year.

Great idea, Buzz. I love to know what others are reading, especially since I vow to read more this year.
1The thing that sucks, is that many of the big companies that are apart of the Producing half of the strike also own publishing companies. So even if you don't watch their tv shows, if you go buy their books you are still hurting the WGA and supporting the Producers.
The library might be a good option, perhaps?
2I loved The other Boleyn girl and The time traveler's wife. I read a bunch as it is so even without the writers strike I think this is a great idea.
3Hi-
I also recommend "The Other Boleyn Girl" and there will soon be a new movie out based on this book. It is starring two fav's of mine - Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn and Scarlett Johanson as Mary Boleyn. Eric Bana will be King Henry VIII. The book is awesome and I can't wait to see it played out on the big screen in Feb. Check it out!!!
4I agree with the Time Traveler's Wife, and along the new movie theme is also My Sister's Keeper. Another good one to check out is The Memory Keeper's Daughter.
5The Red Tent is a really good book.
6i just read she's come undone and couldn't put it down.
7'The Red Tent' is one of my all time favorites, and I can't wait until I have some time to myself to read 'Eat, Pray, Love.' Great selections Buzz- thank you! I can't wait to see what others recommend.
8Ohhh I love The Red Tent, I read it at least once a year.
9Joanne Harris, Jigs and Wheels a colection of short stories, I LOVE IT!!! actully anything by he is amazing.
10I loved reading The Red Tent - I read it a few years ago and it was such a surprisingly great read!
11The Secret Life of Bees and TTW were great books! Eat Pray Love is on my TBR list. Also have The Red Tent on my shelf patiently waiting for me.
12Pinkerton - me too! Actually, I'd say I read it about twice a year. I'm not particularly religious, but this book really grabs me. LOVE it. Every woman should read The Red Tent!
13good idea. i am just starting to read "the namesake" and "the yaucobian building" but whether or not they are book-club worthy, i have no idea.
14Eat Pray Love is a great choice. I'm finishing it up tomorrow. Haven't been able to put it down. I got a lot of recommendations for Pillars of the Earth so that's coming up for me in a day or so. I've heard it's wonderful and supposed to have lots to discuss.
15Pillars of the Earth is probably the best book I have ever read! Other great books that I recently finished are The Other Boleyn Girl, The Kite Runner, and East of Eden (by Steinbeck).
