Note: My buddy Molly wrote this review because I was unable to attend the screening for the movie. Thanks, Molly!
To be fair, P.S. I Love You isn't as bad as I feared it would be, but it also wasn't nearly as sweet a movie as the premise could have created. Instead, Hilary Swank further proved that she's far better at serious dramas than slightly endearing romances. Hey, on the bright side, Gerard Butler was on screen more than I thought he would be and he spent much of the time either shirtless or in a tight tank top. No complaints there.

The premise of the movie is nothing more than it seems. A young couple in love is ripped apart when Gerry (Butler) dies fairly suddenly of a brain tumor. But before he passes he writes Holly (Swank) a series of letters and arranges for them to find her in various ways over the course of the year following his death. On the one hand, it's heart-meltingly sweet, the kind of movie that you just know you'll cry watching. On the other, is there something a little sadistic about forcing your widow to wait every day hoping for word from you only to draw out the heartbreak of your death over a whole year? It's an interesting conundrum, and one that P.S. doesn't quite figure out.
To read the rest of my review just read more.
The movie opens on a fight between Holly and Gerry in their Lower East Side apartment. It's dramatic and passionate, as fights between lovers tend to be, and a lot of threats are thrown around. In the end, they make up but don't actually resolve anything, and then, bam! Just like that, in the next scene we're at Gerry's wake. It's an incomplete photo of this love story the viewer is supposed to see as huge and important, but the blanks aren't ever really filled in. We get bits and pieces of their history (and swoon-worthy Gerard moments), but Hilary Swank rarely seems anything but whiny and insufferable.

Kathy Bates, who plays Holly's mother, has her reasons for disliking Gerry and his letter-writing, but mostly seems pretty unsupportive of her grieving daughter. Thankfully, she's a strong enough actress to make it work. Other bit players are all equal parts high and low, Lisa Kudrow is 80% just playing Phoebe, for better or for worse, and Harry Connick Jr. is kind of quirky/sweet, but to be honest he made me uncomfortable.
Overall the movie is fine, but nothing more. It'll make you cry if you're into that sort of thing and it will probably make you roll your eyes at least a few times. To its merit, it doesn't go the easiest possible route with the ending, but along the way there are moments when it seems like the kindest gesture is just too intentionally heartbreaking. I'm sure there will be a few people who love this movie, but for most it's a love story that (like the bad karaoke in the film) just doesn't hit the right notes.
P.S. There is not nearly enough Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

I am so looking forward to seeing this movie...
1i cried just watching the previews about a month ago at the theaters!
2meh. didn't want to see it anyway but i fiddled with the idea of going JUST to see Jeffery Dean Morgan. LOVE him. he is amazingly sexy.
3indielove, i agree. i just want to see denny.
4I don't know about Hilary as a lead in a romcom, but I'm watching to see Gerard!
5Mmm, Gerard Butler. But even he isn't hot enough to get me to see this.
6I agree with Sticky... Gerard Butler AND Jeffrey Dean Morgan are both yum, but I still have no desire to see this.
7I have no desire to see this, the review made me want to see it even less
8This is really disappointing because I loved the book that it is based on a lot! But I can definitly tell that it is the type of book that they would change a lot to fit a movie. But I will see it to see two of my favorite long lost characters Phoebe and Denny! haha
9As a fan of the book, I thought the movie would be great. That was until I heard Hilary Swank was playing the lead character. I don't see her as the main character at all. The trailer with Lisa Kudrow seems exactly like her Phoebe character. When I can't stand the trailer, it's likely I'll despise the movie. It's too bad because the book was really great.
10I read the book on a plane the other day and after doublechecking the casting (thanks IMDB) I'm totally unconvinced. It just seems really wrong and can't imagine the changes. The book was pretty lightweight, but pleasant but the movie makes me wary even though I adore Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
11Jeffrey Dean Morgan was the biggest draw for me to watch this movie. Alas, the rest of the cast is not so appealing, except maybe Gerard Butler. I don't think I'll be watching this.
12I think Hilary Swank is a great actress, but this movie looks like the same ol' boring and predictable romance. Yawn.
13Hilary Swank seems to be so miscast in this film. I'll add it to my Netflix list and wait.
14gerry bulter is hott!
15I saw the movie - it was corny but sweet. I'm a sap so it made my cry at various points, but there were definitely parts I sincerely disliked. Overall, a cute movie but not a great one. I'd watch it again, though.
16I don't care what anyone says! This looks like such a cute movie, I can't wait to see it!
17I went to a midnight showing last night with my best friend last night and I will say I enjoyed it. I'm not big on romantic comedies though. I loved seeing JDM and I wanted more of him.
18Ugh why is Hilary Swank playing the lead????
19Sounds like I might relegate this to the Netflix list or wait for it on USA or something.
20i'm hoping for the best with this movie. i'm a big gerry fan, but i don't know about hilary in this kinda film.
21I really enjoyed the book but as soon as I saw the cast (except for Gerard Butler: YUM) I was immediately turned off, is that bad? After reading all the reviews I think I will give this one a pass.
22Can I just say I've seen the trailer and as an Irish girl I am HORRIFIED at Gerard's accent!
It is possible the worst attempt I have ever heard!
23please watch the movie! i saw it last night and looooooooooooved it...
24This is Hillary Swanks Failed attempt to get her into the "sweet love drama" genre and out of the "edgy hard drama" that we are used to seeing her in. It wont work, everyone sees her as Brandon Teena and the fighter chick, and thats it. She isnt attractive or endearing enough to pull it off. This movie is going to bomb, and poor gerard is brought down with it.
25i have yet to see the movie but i just finished the book and rather enjoyed it - it was not written super well but its a great story none the less that really hooks you but after checking out IMDB and seeing that half the main characters from the book are gone and that it takes place in US rather than in Ireland i was disappointed and cant decided weather or not i want to ruin the picture i have in my head by seeing the movie
26I thought the movie was cute, but not great. Gerard Butler is beautiful and that almost makes up for his not-so-great irish dialect. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, however, is swoonworthy and his accent was actually pretty good. Hilary Swank was okay, but at times her character was just too harsh. I am a sucker for romantic comedies, so I won't be too hard on the film. I would watch it again simply for the eye candy.
27I was almost dragged to see this, but with help of God and the Universe, escaped without having to endure this movie.
Thank you God.
I like Hilary Swank, but not for this type of movie and I'm not big on RomComs in general, I only tend to like them when they happen to come on TV and I'm stuck in the house. I think Swank should stick to edgy dramas.
28This movie was great! Hilary was adorable .. I never go by critics.
29Gerald Butler makes the movie - he is so hot, Hilary comes off as a little rough around the edges, but it was a good movie - just for the manjoyment!!
30Gerard Butler's abs and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's butt are the only two reasons to see this movie!! I rolled my eyes the whole time, and I'm about as sappy as it gets, but this movie just never gelled for me. I think that had a lot to do with Hilary Swank. Please don't pay her to be a romantic lead ever again!! And Harry Connick Jr. could've used a razor. Plus, how did Gerry afford to send not only Holly to Ireland, but also her two friends!! That was the biggest conundrum for me.
31I loved this !!
32I don´t agree with this review at all! I loved this movie, it was so sweet, sad and funny! Especially Lisa Kudrow made me laugh. And the guys... that is to say THE MEN were top class, of course no one beat Jeffrey Dean Morgan... sexy monster.. Anyway, I would give this 4 out of 6 stars. It was really good.
