In yet more book-to-movie news, the bestselling novel by Sue Monk Kidd The Secret Life of Bees will be adapted for film and they already have a cast mostly in place. The young girl at the center of the story will be played by — who else? — Dakota Fanning. With the addition of this project, Fanning has six movies in various stages of production. When does she have the time to come-of-age in real life?
Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah and Sophie Okonedo have also signed on for the project and Alicia Keys is apparently in talks to join as well. According to Variety:
Set in South Carolina in 1964, story centers on Lily Owens (Fanning), who escapes her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father by running away with her caregiver and only friend (Hudson) to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Latifah, Okonedo and Keys would play the three sisters.
I liked the book very much so I hope they don't make it into a silly Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood kind of thing. What do you think? Are you interested in a big-screen version of The Secret Life of Bees?

This makes me
so so angry.
Too angry for words.
1Who in the world will each of the sisters play? I don't know if I agree with this and I'm really starting to hate on Dakota for being cast in all of these roles I don't think she is right for.
2I loved this book, i hope the movie turns out well!
3LOVED the book. Although I would have never pegged Dakota for the role, Im sure she will do great.
4this is my FAVORITE book (behind Where The Red Fern Grows) so hopefully they don't ruin it!
5I love, love, love this book. And I have full to the realization that when they make adaptations I am not going to see the book played out. I am going to see a film inspired by the book. I am actually happy to hear this.
6im sosick of Dakota Fanning
7Good freaking lord. No, Dakota Fanning doesn't need to play this role either. She is not the only girl that age in Hollywood, and sometimes it's nice to see a new face.
I'm hoping against hope this one isn't bad, but after reading all the foolishness going on with the "My Sister's Keeper" casting, that hope is thin.
8i think i could see abigail breslin playing lily better than dakota. i think i can see queen latifah in the role, but i don't know about jennifer hudson
9I LOVE this book, can't wait to see the movie.
But like everyone said, seeing Dakota Fanning everywhere is getting REALLY annoying...
10I agree with everyone else here, Dakota Fanning gets all these roles and I think audiences are getting tired of her. Ever considered holding auditions for new talent ... ?
I don't know about you guys, but I pictured the sisters being older than the actresses they have cast ... more like in their late 40s.
11Dakota is WRONG for the role of Lily...
12I loved this book. I don't see Dakota Fanning as Lily either. I don't know who I would like to be cast.
But why all the hate on Dakota? Poor thing, she can't help it that she's talented
What has she been cast in lately that's got everyone in an uproar? Winged Creatures?
13isn't there ANOTHER child sctor out there!?!!?!!
14i wish they would give "no names" more of a chance,...there'd be so much more variety!!!
I absolutely love this book, so hopefully they do a good job with the movie. I agree, though, that Dakota doesn't really seem to fit the part, and Abigail would be better, or some other new talent.
15I love this book! Books to movies very few live up to the book.
16someone who hates on a child obviously doesn't got anything going on in their life's so they have to bash someone they don't even know. how could Dakota be annoying she a fantastic actress. an who know she might be good for the part just because you guys don't see it does not mean she not.
17I love this line up!!! Dakota Fanning is a force to be reckon with and she obviously has a fabulous agent.
18Ok first off, It isn't Dakota's fault she gets all these roles. She's just a kid doing what she loves to do. And second if you're sick of Dakota Fanning, don't go looking for her. That's like putting salt on a cut and complaining it hurts! Besides, don't you people have any thing better to do?
