The Hollywood writers' strike has claimed its first casualty of the awards season: The People's Choice ceremony has been canceled.
The awards, which nominated the likes of Justin Timberlake and Jason Bourne just a few weeks ago, were scheduled for a Jan.8 broadcast on CBS, hosted by Queen Latifah. The voting page is still working, but the winners won't get their trophies at a formal ceremony or get to walk the red carpet.
It sounds like CBS is still hoping to air some kind of show, and one report says winners will be asked to tape their thank-yous so they can be broadcast that night. Would anyone watch that? And how bad of a sign is this for the Golden Globes and Oscars?

I support the writers and what they're asking for in the strike. But, I feel canceling this ceremony is wrong...
1Hollywood is slowly decreasing the very thing it is fighting for- a piece of the pie.
If the writer's and the studioheads don't come to some sort of agreement soon, the public will turn to other forms of entertainment to keep them busy- books! What a concept!
Then, they won't need the People's Choice Awards, The Golden Globes, or The Oscars, because the public won't care!
Enoughs enough!
I was for the writers in the beginning, but now I think this is a deadlock struggle that no one will truly win.
And, the sad thing is, the writer's that really could have benefited from this (plus the misc other people that put together tvs and movies) are having a crummy Holiday season because they are out of work and not getting paid. How ironic.
I can't wait to see what advertisers do about this change in the tv lineup next year. They are not going to pay prime dollars to show commercials during repeats. Without a February or May sweeps month, the studios and networks are going to lose money. Again, how ironic!
Soon this piece of the pie they are all fighting for will be nothing more than a poptart!
2i can understand the basic gist of the writers strike - but when you think about all that's American about TV and movies - it's the awards show where people can choose who they really like - specifically the people's choice awards - and now that's not going to really happen.
i think that this is taking a major toll in the advertising world as well since ratings are going down - networks are being forced to issue credits becuase of low ratings, and some advertisers just choose to advertise during awards shows and big events - and now that's not going to happen. there are just so many ramifications - i wish they could just come to an agreement soon.

4I think they are trying to bring this up, because with the holiday season, people really aren't missing their shows because they are busy, so the strike hasn't had the affect they wish it had.
I'm not really a fan of award shows, but I would be so disappointed if I had planned to be a presenter. And, I always enjoy Queen Latifah, so it is disappointing to lose the chance to see her!
