I'm not sure how to feel about this news: Alec Baldwin has signed on to star alongside Cameron Diaz and the Fanning sisters in the film version of Jodi Picoult's bestselling novel My Sister's Keeper. Where Diaz seems slightly too young (and not mom-ish) to play the girls' mother, Alec Baldwin seems older than what I'd envisioned to play the part of the attorney.
His character is the lawyer who "represents a child (Elle Fanning) after she sues her parents for emancipation on the grounds they bred her to be a genetic match who could prolong the life of her cancer-ridden sister (Dakota Fanning). The girl's mother (Diaz) is a former trial lawyer and represents herself in court."
I figured this character might be somewhat gruff and I think Baldwin can easily pull that off, but I'd also thought he would be young and dashing. My casting choice was Jon Hamm who recently played Don Draper on Mad Men. What do you think about the casting choice of Alec Baldwin?

None of the casting choices for this movie make sense.
1I haven't read the book, but it sounds like a fascinating story. I may have to add this to my last minute Christmas list.
2interesting casting choices for the adults. i don't see it, but who knows.
3ok i am currently reading this (im about a third done) and unless im wrong, the attorney is supposed to be 32 years old!! this is frustrating... i dont think ill be able to enjoy this movie, having read the book. it might be good if you arent comparing it to the book... seriously though, Alec Baldwin? very disapointing!!!!
4They already screwed the book up by casting the fanning girls (too young) and Diaz (not right at all) so alec is just the cherry on this poo float.
5Buzz, I love your suggestion of Jon Hamm. I can so see him in this role, but alas, it's not to be. Alec Baldwin just doesn't seem to be the right fit, but neither does Cameron Diaz. Too bad.
6I'm currently reading this book, and although Alec does seem a little old, I still think he could be a nice fit for the character. I like Cameron Diaz as an actress (she can do dramatic-she was good in Being John Malkovich), but I'm not sure about her for a role like this. And the Fannings do seem a little young.
7This movie will just be wrong - the Fanning girls are too young, Cameron Diaz is just wrong, and Alec Baldwin is too old. The book is fabulous, and everything so far is leading this to be a horrible adaptation.
At this rate they'll probably change the ending too.
8They are killing this one actor at a time.
9They've got this movie all wrong! Alec, Cameron, and the Fanning Twins? No, no, no, no, no!
Did they cast the Dad yet? He was a fantastic character!
10This is one of my favorite books. Interesting casting choices. Of course I'll go see it regardless of what I think of the cast.
11are you kiddding me!?
12ugh, they are ruining this book.
im really dissappointed with the casting and i really dont think theyre going to do a good job.
cameron diaz is too young, dakota fanning is too young, Anna is supposed to be old enough to make her own decisions. this wont work at all. my favorite book is going to the dumps =(
I heard this was an amazing book.
I dont like Alec, but I think the Fanning sisters might be a good choice, I think Dakota is a lot older now than people remember her as. She hasnt done any work in a while.
13Jon Hamm would be wonderful. BTW is Mad Men coming back?
14The Fanning sisters? I didn't know Dakota's sister is an actor now.
15I LOVED this book, so I'm a bit frustrated as well with the casting choices. Cameron Diaz doesn't seem capable of playing the mom role. And Dakota Fanning is the default choice for all preteen roles. I would have preferred they go with a more seasoned dramatic actress, a younger actor for the attorney, and an unknown for the daughters.
16mommie — Yes, thank goodness, Mad Men is returning for a second season! Well, if/when the writers strike ends, that is. But that's the plan. I'm absolutely thrilled about that, as I loved this show.
17Every time I read something about the casting for this movie, I get angry.
18Just when I thought they could not POSSIBLY make this movie any worse!
He could have played the lawyer well, I think. But the dad? No way. And I love Alec!
19Ok. Well this is embarassing.
Obviously I read the post to fast.
I think Baldwin would have been a miss for the dad, but since he's been cast as -- ahem-- the lawyer, I say, go Alec
