Talk about a prophetic title: I Am Legend has proven to be, well, legendary. Taking in $76.5 million in its opening weekend, the Will Smith sci-fi thriller beat out Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($72.6 million) to become the highest-grossing December movie ever. In the history of box office sales in general, I Am Legend's opening weekend is the 16th highest-grossing of all time.

In addition, the updated CGI version of Alvin and the Chipmunks did extremely well, bringing in $45 million. By contrast, however, The Golden Compass drastically underperformed at the box office, coming in third place but totaling just $9 million in sales its second weekend in theaters. Enchanted came in fourth place with No Country for Old Men rounding out the top five. The returning film that did the most pleasingly is Atonement, which jumped from No. 15 to No. 9 on the charts, this weekend bringing in $1.8 million. Yay!

I saw I am Legend Sunday night, and I really enjoyed it. There are a few weirdo parts and an embarrassing scene of unintentional hilarity, but I really liked the story. It told a good story well, with plenty of suspense and moments of fear or panic. What'd y'all think? I liked it, but I seemed to like it more than the people I was with. I felt like I was with him the whole movie; the ending was a surprise, but the title said it all.
1Are everyone's posts being flagged? Or just mine?
2Thats because it's an awesome movie and Will is the man!!! Go BIG WILL!!!
3While i am happy for Will, I Am Legend was disappointing. They completely messed up the book, the "vampires" and the whole frikking point of the books message.
4i also read that it's also will's biggest opening of his career. good for will. the man just does not make a movie no one will see.
5This is the reason why I think critics asre so unnecessary they get it sooooo wrong all the time. They always pan movies which rock.
6I really enjoyed it. Our theater was packed to the gills too! As far as it's following the book - I haven't read it but I never like to compare a book to it's movie counter part as they are generally more of an outline than anything. I was entertained and I only minded the CGI with the lions because it was pretty bad. Other than that I'd recommend it.
7I saw it Friday night and I enjoyed. It was so intense! I would recommend it! And Will Smith is my favorite!
8I haven't seen the movie yet, not sure if I will. Last night, my Dad actually showed me the trailer of the version from the 70s, The Omega Man with Charlton Heston. Will Smith is hardcore awesome though and there's nothing he does best than kick some butt.
I always wonder how being the Highest Grossing opening works, don't movie prices increase over the years, so how could you be definitive as to which movie actual makes the most with the increase of ticket prices and inflation? Why don't they measure it based on number of tickets sold? I guess I just don't understand the movie business.
9Will Smith is..I can't even think of the right word to say. Who doesn't love him?
