Last night's Project Runway was definitely one of my favorites of the season. Don't get me wrong, I love me some SJP, but I also love creative challenges that get the designers out of their comfort zones. The menswear episodes come to mind, but even better are the "real women" challenges that involve the designers creating pieces for women who are not a size 0 (Jeffrey's muumuu, anyone?). This time around, not only were the women not a size 0, but all had lost a considerable amount of weight. The challenge, therefore, was to create an outfit for them using their favorite, old clothes as the raw material.

In my mind, the fact that the designers had to use the fabric from pre-existing clothing made it much more difficult than the similar challenge in season three (although the fact that there wasn't an annoying nag like Angela's mother and an equally obnoxious antagonist like Jeffrey probably helped). Steven, in particular, had it rough, as his model's favorite, old outfit was her poofy, polyester wedding dress — but that shouldn't have excused him from abandoning the fabric altogether. Was that enough for Heidi to give him her auf wiedersehen?

The big news of the night was Jack's decision to remove himself from the competition because of health concerns. No, he wasn't my favorite designer, but he was a great personality and really fun to watch. (He seems to be doing well now, too.) With Jack's departure, I was really worried about the group being a little stale. But then Tim Gunn shocked me by bringing back Chris March, who was sent home last week. He's not my favorite designer either, but I do think he's hilarious. He even got Tim to admit that "I've made more bad decisions at 3 o'clock in the morning that I can list." Phenomenal.
Now back to the challenge. Steven wasn't the only designer to all but abandon his model's fabric. Jillian pulled a similar stunt, too, thanks to Tim's loophole of giving the designers $10 to spend on fabric at Mood. Most used the money for trim, but Steven and Jillian bought enough for their whole outfits. It worked better for Jillian than it did for Steven, as the judges loved her red, halter dress and hated his sloppy, French-maid look. See ya, Steven.
Kevin and Christian were the two front-runners this time around. Kevin created a yellow, strapless dress with leggings for his model, and Christian went more casual with jeans, a taupe shirt, and a black blouse. I preferred Kevin's dress (though I saw the judges' point about the leggings being a little lazy), but the judges went with Christian. His win will no doubt add more fuel to the fire that is Christian's ego.
What do you guys think? Was Christian's outfit really the best? Did Steven deserve to go more than Elisa or Chris?
Oh, and two more things: Heidi got bangs, and — wait for it — Ricky cried again (surprise)!

I thought this was a terrific episode. I loved the challenge, and am so glad Chris is back. By the way, on Bravo, they have posted Tim Gunn's blog for this episode.
1i thought kevin should have won. But... Christian is fabulous.
I was so happy to see steven leave, i don't know why but he gets on my nerves. I think he looks like Powder. Does anyone remember that movie?
And i was soo happy they brought back Chris but i hated that Jack decided to leave.I loved him.
2Ricky is annoying me,always crying. lol
3And poor Steven with that ugly bride dress!
I thought Christian deserved to win. Out of the top two looks, I thought the pieces in his were the most wearable for different occasions...He also makes me laugh so hard with his indifferent melodramatic statements. "Omigahd, ImannaDIE."
4i thought that kevin should have won the challenge - did you see what he did to that blazer? all the christian did was rework a shirt...it looked GREAT but seriously.
5i was sad when jack left, but when tim said he had another surprise for them, i was so excited cuz i knew it was chris!!! not the best designer, i'll admit, but i LOVE his personality.
i agree, steven needed to go. he did have the hardest piece to work with, but he didn't do ANYTHING with it. did anybody else think it was a little rude how they were making fun of the wedding dress? sure it was ugly, but it was that woman's favorite thing from her larger years, and i know i would be upset if i saw a bunch of people on tv making fun of my favorite things!
britt-i was thinking the same thing about him looking like powder!!!
6This was the best episode of the season so far! I laughed, I cried, it was fabulous.
I wanted Kevin to win. When you compare the shirt/dress he made out of that ugly plain blazer, it was total transformation. Christian's was good too, especially considering that she didn't like color, pattern, or anything besides jeans and black.
Steven deserved to go, and yes miss brit, I've found him annoying as well. Not because he reminds me of Powder (I loved that movie) but something about his voice and his demeanor, his over-calculated manner of speaking. And the fact that he showed no creativity whatsoever in this challenge! My god it was horrible. At least Chris's was interesting and had some color even if it was a little costume-y. Elisa was not thinking about the woman's body at all in this challenge which really surprised me.
"Either they'll die from it, or they'll die because of it" - is Christian going to say this in every episode? I wonder why the editors put that in when it was the same exact thing he said last time. Was it intentional?
7This was a great challenge. I was waiting like steven to see if those women were sisters and mothers!!
I was so upset to see jack go, not only because he was kicking arse but because he has a genuine spirit and personality and i hope they bring him back for next season. wouldnt that be awesome?
Stevens abhorance to the "white polyester blend" wedding dress (and excuse me if i cringe but her favorite outfit is a wedding dress, i hope she is married) was a bit strange. Yes the thing had pearls and lace galore but the bottom part was usable! The black dress with white collar was inexcusable. I will miss his humor though, he had a way of smirking that cracked me up.
I love christian, him yanking his own chain cracks me up, am i the only one that sees it as less of a "ego" thing and more of a "positive thinking" thing? He isnt a jerk. I really want him to win.
8rivrchild: I noticed that they used the same comment from Christian also. Weird.
9CaterpillarGirl, I see can see it as a "positive thinking" thing, and also a "gotta have personality if they're going to remember me thing" too. He is good, but he's been brought down a peg in at least one episode so far and he admitted it. Although I have yet to hear him give praise or admit when someone else has done a good job, only insult them when they do poorly, which is very unclassy.
10I'm gonna miss Stephen, but that dress really was hideous. I think what made him the one to go home was that not only was his outfit bad and poorly constructed, but he didn't really adhere to the challenge at all. But, love me some Christian! Yes, he's totally snotty, but his snarky little comments are the only real drama on this season. And so glad to see Chris back!
11did anyone notice that no one said that Stephen's dress was poorly constructed? Maybe because he used glue instead of pins, but i'm surprised the judges didn't say anything about the poor quality of the dress, just how boring and french-maidy it was.
12It was really sad when Jack left. Anyway... I COULD NOT BELIEVE that Christian won! I can't stand him! He makes the same jacket every single time. Doesn't he know how to design anything else? Plus he's such an ass. He's so full of himself it makes me sick. Ugh.
13I really thought Kevin should have won. His outfit was more flattering to his model (and it was fresh). Kevin and Kit are my favorites.
I don't really like Christian, but I do really like the top he created. Plus, I was impressed that he actually did what his model asked for. I thought he would pull the "I'm so awesome so I know what's better for you."
Second, I would normally find Ricky's crying annoying, but for some reason, he is endearing to me. Maybe b/c he put Victoria in her place....
14I loved what Christian did. I though they were going to put Jillian's dress in the bottom, I'm so surprised they liked it. I thought it looked really awkward.
15I liked Christian's and Kevin's outfits-- I would liked to have seen Kevin win, but maybe next time. As for Chris March, he has yet to impress me; what was up with the boobs of the shirt he made last night?
16Why is that Ricky always crying? I swear, it's like every episode.
17I was really surprised that Raimmi (sp?) wasn't in the top 3. I thought it was really creative, and the model looked great in it.
18laneylaney I agree. I think it was the black trim going down the front. I know what she was trying to do with that, but I don't think it was as flattering as she thought it would be. The dress would have been much less awkward without it. But then she wouldn't have used anything from the original outfit ...
I was just thinking that Laura (from season 3 ) could have probably done something really cool with Steven's wedding dress, including the extra black fabric. He had such a defeatist attitude. And yes, on top of that he used GLUE!
19I missed last night's episode. I'm SO happy Chris is back! I love his sense of humor, I was totally bummed when he left.
20i think steven should have made a tube dress and used all the pretty white lace as a sash peice in the middle, classy and uses the lace. he totally got defeatest on it and deserved to go home, it was a terrible dress, no matter what color it was or material used. ew. ewww.
21I love Jack, as a designer and a person (that I don't know!), and was heartbroken for him. Who's going to carry Christian around in a totebag now? But hey, he seems to be fine now, and his health is the most important thing. I was thrilled to see Chris come back, he's just such a sweetie. That dress was fug though. Lots of fug on that runway last night! I kinda wish Chris would have gotten the wedding dress, I think he would have made something at least more interesting (probably TOO interesting, so maybe it's for the best).
22I loved Kevin's outfit and thought that he should've won but I kinda like Christian's top too. Thanks to spoilers, I already knew that Jack was leaving this episode and from watching the teaser trailer for this episode last week, I totally knew Chris March was coming back.
I think Ricky needs some therapy. Girlfriend cries waaay too much.
23i really liked this challenge. not too commercial, and the designers had to be both creative and cooperative.
i thought kevin should've won. i thought christian's was great, but i really liked what kevin did with the blazer. also, i would've picked rami's outfit over jillian's.
i sort of liked steve, but i hated his outfit. he was very down on the whole thing, and he could've gone with a color to tone down the white; instead, he went with fabric that most highlighted the white. he seemed very limited in his vision.
24i thought stevens model looked like a pilgrim kind of!! all she needed was one of those hats and some clogs, lol.i thought what elise designed was super ugly, she really should have gone home b/c it seems like she designs the same thing. i wanted kevin to win i thought his outfit was much cuter but what are you gonna do? i was sad to see jack go he was adorable but his health is way more important. and like many before me ricky needs to get OVER it, seriously you can say ANYTHING to him and he'll start to cry!!
25I thought Tim Gunn's comment about his mistakes at 3am was HILARIOUS! Did anyone watch the Janice Dickinson modeling agency episode afterwards. I don't have the Oxygen network so it was my first time seeing it. It was really funny. I hope Bravo runs the whole season!
26chicsugar, i saw the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. I was super excited because the Oxygen isn't available at school.
27I love the show.
I'm glad Chris is back he has the best sense of humor. I like Cristian and wasn't surprised that he won. The whole concept was to turn the old outfit into an everyday outfit and he really captured the concept.
28i went to the bathroom last night, came back and chris march was back i was like okay.............????? i was so sad for jack. i was really rooting for him. and i love christian because he's so fab, but i thought kevin should've won.
29"I've made more bad decisions at 3 o'clock in the morning that I can list." Best line in Project Runway EVER!
30Jack leaving was sad only because you could tell he really wanted to be there. Bring Chris back was not a surprise to me. I kind of saw it coming.
Christian is hit or miss with me. Sometimes I find him funny but other times I just want to smack him. I also always have an urge to pull the his head to the side so that his hair is symmetrical
Even though Steven's outfit was ugly it had better construction then that crazy chicks outfit. But I wonder if the producers want to keep her for the crazy factor
31Lacey I totally thought Pilgrim too!! Yes! so ugly.
32I totally have a crush on Rami of some reason, I think he's dreamy. Can't stand Christian and that sure he made looked really famiiliar. Jillian is starting to be on of my favs and Rami of course. It was so sad to see Jack in that state...very sad to see him go as well...keep it up PROJECT RUNWAY!
