Things aren't looking good in the Hollywood writers' strike. Talks broke down on Friday, and there are no plans for the writers and producers to get back to the bargaining table. It's starting to feel like this strike isn't going away anytime soon, so I'm readying my strike plan.
What's a strike plan? It's how I plan to entertain myself while I wait for a normal slate of TV programming to return. All those DVDs on my Netflix queue, TiVoed shows I haven't gotten around to watching, and books sitting untouched on my shelf factor into my plan.
First up, I want to polish off all four seasons of The Wire so I can be ready when the final season premieres Jan. 6. Then maybe I'll finally finish those last few episodes of The Riches that have been languishing on my TiVo. I'll still have a few new episodes of Friday Night Lights to tide me over, and I'll be ready when the Cashmere Mafia vs. Lipstick Jungle battle kicks into high gear. I'll also be testing out the new American Gladiators, and my library card will get a workout as I test out Gods Behaving Badly and Atonement. If all that fails, I'll go back and watch a classic series from my teenage years: Dawson's Creek, start to finish.
What leftover TV shows, movies, and books will you be counting on to get you through if this strike goes on much longer?

Looks like me and Bally Fitness will once again be friends again...Ballys and Books!!!
By the time spring comes around both my physical and mental bodies will be fitter than Madonna!!!
1Well, I've got about 240 movies/tv shows in my Netflix queue to get my through the strike. I'm especially excited about Season 2 of Big Love and Once.
But I'd be more excited about new episodes of The Office and a full 16 episode season of Lost.
2I, too, will be turning to Netflix. I'll be nursing my wounds with Seasons 1-3 of the Office and House, among others. I've already dusted off my library card and have a read several books lately, including Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Piccoult-- I'm halfway through it.
3Oh, and I'm also gonna watch Weeds, since I don't have Showtime.
tiabia, I'll also be going back to the gym with a vengeance ( I go just about everday as it is, but I am definitely NOT working out to my full potential). Take that, re-runs!!
4I love educational TV like PBS but I also bought some new exercise DVDs, invested in a stepper and weights, so it's been great for my health!
5I'm gonna borrow my brother's Weeds DVDs and try to get into that show. Thank goodness Project Runway's on!
6netflix of old classics and last season's lost on dvd that i saved for an occasion of this nature! now i'm kinda glad i missed it...
7Like most everyone else, I have a ridiculous amount of dvds awaiting me on netflix that I thought I'd never get through... guess I can now? also, I've been trying to catch up with the latest incarnation of Dr. Who via a few certain online tv sites... nerd! yes, I know.
8Hopefully I'll be able to get through my pile of books that's accumulated over the fall before school starts up again.
I'm going to stick with good old fashioned crying and whining. And Netflix.
9Movies! Lots of movies!
10And checking out reruns (hopefully) of shows I didn't watch yet.
I'm hoping to catch up on Dirty Sexy Money, watch The Wire (all seasons), catch up on my Netflix queue, and go to the gym.
Also, the trusty library card will come in handy.
So many books to read!
11Funny how all of us are getting in better shape because of the strike! haha
12I'm glad to hear that so many others have slightly out of control Netflix queues. That many movies on a single queue is kind of daunting. At least I'm not alone.
13i think we've hit the triple digits now on the netflix cue... we're definitely hitting up all the showtime series' that we've never been able to watch and also things like "30 Rock" that have just never fit into the schedule.
also, i'm a graduate student, so i'm sure that homework will be involved
14Finish all the stuff that is left on my DVR.
I haven't seen any of Dexter this season, so I got that to watch.
I plan to DVR shows that I was interested in watching, but couldn't because too much was on TV at the same time before I got the DVR.
I wanna watch all off Sex & the City again. Thinking about buying the complete series as a X-mas present to myself.
15ps - sugarbecky - i love jodi piccoult... if you loved Nineteen Minutes, make sure to check out My Sister's Keeper. amazing.
16I'm going to watch Ugly Betty (both seasons), the HBO Elizabeth Movie, and possibly go back and watch (embarrassed to admit) Saved by the Bell for a little blast from the past.
And like all others, I want to read more. Buzz, maybe you could have a special "How to endure the Strike" book list. It could be like "If you like the Office, read.... If you like Brothers and Sisters, read..." I could definitely use the suggestions!
17I have a bunch of TV shows and movies in my Netflix queue. I also have DVR'd a few shows this season that I never got around to even watching like Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies and Private Practice. I'm also behind on Chuck. Although my DVR is almost full, so we need to get going watching some of that stuff!! So far I've been catching up on childhood favorite Christmas movies like the original Grinch, Frosty, Rudolph and Charlie Brown's Christmas. I also just watched Meet Me in St. Louis for the first time and am recording White Christmas either tonight or tomorrow...can't remember which...because I have never seen that one either surprisingly!!
18Doing some damage control on my out of hand Netflix queue and watching all the Journeyman and Private Practices that have piled up on my Tivo. Also, as always, I am diligently reading...I just have more time to do it now
just_kelly- That's a really good idea! I second it!
19I plan on going and watching those shows like Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks that I always meant to watch on DVD. And I might increase my movies from Netflix.
20just_kelly,
There is no need to be embarrassed about watching "Saved By the Bell", what's embarrassing is being late for work 4 out 5 DAYs because you have to watch the 2 hour "Saved by the Bell" block on TBS every morning from 7-9 EST...oops
21just_kelly, that's a great idea! I'll see if I can come up with some.
22fitsugar will be so proud that we're all going to work out more!!
23well, i got the complete set of Friends DVDs for my birthday in july, so maybe i'll actually sit down and watch those from start to finish (although i'm pretty sure i've seen them all already haha.) i also wanna get more into cooking, so i think the food network and yumsugar will be playing a large role in my life pretty soon. And I have a want-to-read list that keeps growing so i'm sure that'll keep my busy (Atonement and Gods behaving Badly are high up on my list too Buzz! And I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it but I want to read the latest book about Princess Diana)
24Love the Dawson's Creek idea, Buzz!
I'll be cursing the fact that Pacey's debut on Grey's has been delayed (hopefully not cancelled completely) by the strike.
I'll be catching up on Big Love season 2, and I plan to check out Extras. I've never seen it.
One more thing- am I the ONLY person here that uses Blockbuster Online instead of Netflix? When I signed up, Blockbuster was cheaper AND I get to exchange all the movies they mail me for a free in-store rental-- PLUS they still mail me the next movie in my queue. Anyone else out there using Blockbuster??
25Netflix, Netflix, Netflix!
After we finish with Planet Earth, I'm excited to watch season 2 of Big Love, season 2 of Weeds, season 2 of Dexter, all of Heroes, Flight of the Conchords, and, of course, countless movies.
26I just signed up for netflix and added Freaks and geeks, weeds and Friday night lights. I'm also going to rewatch Alias and Veronica Mars. I will be doing lots of reading, I just got the Twilight series and am excited to start that.
27I finally Netflixed and watched Season 2 of Prison Break, and can now watch the DVRed beginning of Season 3. I also have a few movies and shows on there to finish off, but not a lot. I have a few books, but I read so much in my job I worry that that much close up work will kill my eyes. My Netflix queue is nearing 200 and I think I'll start plowing through that now that so many of my shows are going dark!
The problem there is that Netflix starts an intentional slowdown when you're too frequent a user - when I was in school my husband and I were actually watching/returning our 3 a week (we've slacked off on movies lately) and the problem is that as a frequent renter you're somehow less likely to get the more popular movies in your list. (they admitted it a year or so ago, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11262292 and I really had the problem, but I hope they're not doing it as much anymore!)
28I am probably going to watch every reality tv show they put on air. I love my regular tv programming but I can deal with reality tv until next fall.
29am going to catch up on all the BBC programs I've missed!!! Also, these writers really deserve to be compensated for their work in the new digital era. I truly hope a fair agreement is reached for them. The actors are really nothing without the lines they say.
30I have a ton of "Oh my God, you haven't seen that movie?" movies on my DVR I hope to roll through. Cinderella Man, Boogie Nights, 21 Grams, High School Musical II, The War (the Ken Burns documentary--have seen parts and it's amazing), Pan's Labyrinth, The Battle of Shaker Heights, Capote, Elizabeth (the Cate Blanchett one), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and National Treasure. Additionally, I have some episodes of FNL, Pushing Daisies, and Criminal Minds to watch.
31"Gods Behaving Badly" is a good book....I read an advance copy of it and I loved it
32I'm in the same boat. I am checking out Veronica Mars and Alias while I wait for my fave shows to return. Also reading Ian McEwan's Atonement.
33I don't have one. =(
34Reading a lot more, working out, and either purchasing a Tivo for educational shows and movies or returning to Netflix.
35I will be watching a lot of BRAVO (Project Runway) and whatever other marathons they have.
I'll be watching Celebrity Apprentice when it starts in January.
Finish the 3rd season of Arrested Development. Maybe they can show AD reruns on Fox. That would be so grand!
36i plan on watching some dvds (Alias, West Wing) and catching up on tv shows i've wanted to see but never had the time to see. I also plan to spend more time reading as well. I am also reading Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult and am thoroughly enjoying it. I still wish there was no strike. It is a fair argument, but so annoying.
37Fandom always goes crazy during hiatuses so I will probably be spending a lot of time sitting in front of the computer eating popcorn and watching the wank. Otherwise, I'm about a third of the way through season one of Alias on DVD and maybe I'll finally get around to watching Firefly and a few other shows I've been meaning to try out, as well as reading and doing some (non-scab!) writing of my own.
38Some good choices there hepsmom, enjoy!
39KerryG...Firefly is AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!! And I seriously heart Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin...woohoo!!!
40I planon watching on DVD:
Dexter season one
Six feet under the whole thing (again)
Buffy and Angel (for the fifty millionth time)
Battlestar galactica (again)
Plus the original star trek seasons 1-3, and Enterprise.
41as last friday totally sucked (as did monday) i'vee been watching Veronica Mars all weekend. and it's soo great. today i even forgot to watch my lovely CSI miami, journeyman and how i met your mother.
on saturday i watched the whole 2 season in just one sitting (i came down with a cold, it's all legal
).
42haha, i also got a few last episode of the riches from summer somewhere
43No more Dexter, Cold Case, Heroes, and Family Guy. I'll be okay. I can watch my DVD's, clean my room more, read some more books, etc.
44Thank goodness "Lost" will be back in February. This has been my favorite show for a couple of years and I hear the show taped it's first several episodes, before the writers strike bagan.
