Sometimes, thanks to the ferry boat disaster, it's easy to forget that Grey's Anatomy does big episodes well. The show made its name with a live bomb inside a patient's chest; big episodes were once its forte. "Crash Into Me," thankfully, felt more like an old-school disaster episode. It was bloody and medically intense, almost ER-style. But there were some solid emotional stories, as well — and though they were predictable, that didn't make them unsatisfying. To talk about the episode, just read more
Most of the doctors had key realizations in this episode: Derek confirmed that Meredith may never be enough for him; Izzie accepted that she'll never be hardcore in the Christina/Hahn way; George and Izzie decided they could never make their relationship work; Bailey faced the fact that she puts the hospital ahead of her home.
Even Lexie learned a couple of things: that she can actually be a good doctor when the situation calls for it, and that medicine doesn't always help people. If Izzie is idealistic, Lexie has practically been Pollyanna; she really believes the best about everyone and thinks every situation will have some good. But being splattered with a patient's blood, doing everything right, and still failing to save him is the sort of thing that will cause your idealism to take a hit.
If there's any good news for Lexie, it's that she might finally have a chance to get to know Meredith. Mere learned some things, too — though with Meredith, I'm never sure how long these lessons will stick — about just having someone to get you through. The best she can do right now is telling Derek not to date other people — after he's already kissed someone else, not that she knows that yet — but it's a start.
Speaking of Derek: The sudden attraction to Rose has confused me a little because I can't tell what it's based on (the way she gets nervous around him and isn't afraid to say so?). I knew it had to be coming, and yet their kiss still took me by surprise. Don't they usually have supply closets for that sort of thing?
Maybe the closets were occupied by Alex and Ava. What are these two doing? I'm glad Alex got caught — and Mark recognizing the face he built was the perfect way to do it — and I'm glad he seems to realize that Ava is just there to play dress-up and escape her actual life. It's not stopping him from kissing her, though.

Izzie was playing dress-up in these episodes as well, being a mini-Hahn instead of her usual, compassionate self. It earned her praise but no satisfaction; she would have rather been with the patients' families than in the toughest surgery. I liked this story, and not just because it signaled the end of Gizzie — though boy, they just slipped that in there, huh? George chalked the problem up to timing and not chemistry; whatever the reason, I'm glad we're done.
Some other thoughts:
- Bailey was clearly never going to make it out of surgery to meet her husband. Did the whole bit about telling him he'd be grateful for a good surgeon if he were wounded feel like foreshadowing to anyone else?
- I loved the structure of this episode, with the flash forwards at the beginning — especially when the one of Cristina and Meredith dancing panned out to reveal Lexie there, too, at the end.
- The drinking and dancing scene, in general, reminded me of the first two seasons of the show — and that's not a bad thing.
Is there a Mark/Hahn hookup in our future? Do you feel anything for Derek and Rose? And how are you going to make it through the Grey's hiatus?

ughh i thought the kiss between derek and rose was so awkward and weird. i'm not a fan of that hookup at all. i don't find rose an intriguing or interesting character.
1i'm so glad george and izzie are finally over, thought i thought the whole "we have chemistry" thing was a bit strange. i kept thinking about the episode where they kept having bad sex...
The Derek/Rose thing is annoying. She's not his type. It just seems...wrong. Lexi's crying thing annoys me. Alex needs a good woman. Dang it, I just want to see that man get a good woman and stop messing around. Meredith is confused. She needs a therapist and Finn needs to come back.
2i am so over this season. meredith's pathetic-ness and her relationship with derek are too drawn out. i miss the first season when the characters were complicated but they were still funny and there was some wit involved. now it's all drama drama drama. stupid.
3Hasn't Bailey's husband already gone through one medical drama? I sort of think so, so I'm hoping they don't put his life in jeopardy again. The best line of the night for me was from George when he asked Bailey if he could just go do some charts or something during Bailey and Tucker's conversation.
4I really liked this episode.. The Derek/Rose kiss felt forced though, and Meredith's hate for Lexi is really getting on my nerves. She needs to grow up and deal with the fact that Lexi is in her life whether she likes it or not, and stop whining like a damn baby every time she shows up! Speaking of Lexi, her character is still growing on me. I can see her going down the same road Izzie has though - getting too involved with patients rather than being detached.
5I'm really happy that they made George and Izzie back to being friends...they are just so much better that way. I am not a fan of the Derek/Rose thing either. Meredith is seeming to try to be a better person, and I can only imagine how far it will set things back if Derek tells her hes moving on. Oh, and I love, love, love Mark!! So even though I think Hahn is a b*tch...I still think they need to have more scenes with Mark..with his shirt off, flirting, and maybe a hot sex scene with him...I don't know what I am gonna do until this comes back on!!!
6I cannot believe McDreamy kissed that nurse... I was sooo jealous!!!
7I agree that the kiss between Rose and Derek was horrible. Looked like siblings kissing or something. I also do not get what they are doing with that storyline. Why would he be attracted to her? Why would he kiss her just because she fixed a computer and then forgot to turn it back on? Oh, and the whole bit about her having 3 semesters of computers and that being the best the hospital could do ... PUUHHLEASE!!! Maybe I just hate her because for me, it has always been about Mer/Der. When Addison first came, I hated her too, though she was so much woman and surgeon and person in her own right, that I grew to love her. This Rose woman, not so much.
8I am one of the few that is sad about Gizzie. I liked them together, but I do not think that last night's "We aren't going to make this work, are we?" was the end of those two. Maybe we'll just go back to the awesome friendship they had and occassionally they will get drunk and naked.
Poor Bailey. It's not like all doctors' spouses do not know what they are signing on for. Though how Tucker made it through her first years as an intern, etc., I cannot imagine.
And Adorable Seth Green goes the way of the Bomb Squad guy and Denny. That should be a lesson to the docs of Seattle Grace: If you flirt too much with the patients, they are assuredly going to end up dead.
I am going to miss my Grey's. I wish the Bigwigs would just cough up the money that the WGA deserves because this is getting ridiculous, those commercials for the Carrie Ann vs. Bruno dancing teams - horrific. How many terrible reality shows can they subject us to? Of course, that is their plan, put on as many realities to fill the time, some will get ratings, and then the writers will know that they are not really needed. It's a cruel, cruel world out there in Hollywood.
I can't stand Ava...she gives me the creeps. I'm waiting for her to snap at any minute.
And I laughed out loud when George asked Bailey if he could go do charts...soooo funny!
9I like Derek and Meredith together...that said they should either be together or they should just break them up....the whole Derek/Rose thing is a little forced and puts Derek in the jerk category.
10I'm glad Gizzie is over and I do agree that Bailey speech about "needing a surgeon" is a foreshadowing of things to come...meaning that her husband might be killed off.
I like the chemistry between Mark and Hahn.
I'm just going to put it out there that I cried hysterically for the half or so of Grey's last night.
I love Mer's line about, "Better than having somebody than nobody." The episode, imo, was truly heartwrenching (like the good old Grey's).
I have to say...I'm sort of feeling the whole Rose/McDreamy thing. Although, I agree the kiss was awkward (with a capital A). I want to see where it goes though. It should make things interesting, and serve as a major wake up call to Mer.
As far as Grizzie? Sadness. Loved them together (besides the awkward sex).
I also love Bailey and George's dynamic. You can almost sense that he's her favorite. She wouldn't have trusted anyone else to talk to Tucker.
Other than that I loved when Mer told Hahn to shut up. That was classic, and I like the someone "tried" to put Hahn in her place like she does to everyone else.
I'm really going to miss this show while it's gone.
11The storylines are getting to be so annoyingly contrived! Oh, of course the computer breaks down and there's no available tech people. Oh, of course the stupid nurse has 3 semesters of computer science and can fix it! Oh, of course she has shaky hands and Derek has to help so they can save the day together. Oh, of course she forgets to press the restart button and has to lean into him to push it. Oh, of course he just has to kiss her after that. I mean, why wouldn't he? Didn't you know "I love you and I want to be with you and I want to build a house with you and I want to have kids with you and I want to live until I'm 110 and I want to die in your arms but you're not ready so I'LL WAIT FOR YOU" means "I need to make out with some random nurse who just started talking to me"?!
Derek is a jerk. Seriously.
And what is up with Ava? I used to like her ... and now she's just whiny and annoying. So glad Gizzie is done though I'm not buying the "bad timing" thing.
On the plus side, I am loving Mark! I love how the newest additions (Mark, Callie, Dr. Hahn) seem to be bonding. They're the best part of the show right now! Well, at least Mark is.
12ithought this episode was okay, i want callie and mark to hook up again i think they would make a good couple. i know they already did that but i want to see where it could go. im soo over derrick and meredith, she is a whiny B who doesnt know what she wants. im glad that derrick is moving on it will be nice to see him with a normal girl who has little to no issues.
the bailey speech was foreshadowing..........spoiler............
i guess the next episode that we see bailey will be doing the voice over because of something tragic is going to happen to her. so i can only guess that it has something to do with tucker.
13Ugh- Derek and Rose's kiss made me so uncomfortable! It was almost impossible to watch! I don't like Rose at all, she's like an unattractive and annoying version of Addison. Something about the way she talks to Derek and her whole "I'm an imperfect person" schpiel just screamed Addison to me. Except I liked Addison and Kate Walsh is way prettier. Maybe I'm just hating because I truly believe that Mer and Der should just shut up and stay together already.
I loved Lexi in this episode and was seriously depressed about Seth Green's character. When he told Lexi he loved her and had forgotten all about his ex I knew he was a goner, but he still made me smile. So sad.
What the crap is going on with Alex and Ava? I LOVE them together and when he got with Lexi I thought it would make him realize that his heart is with Ava and that he actually has more than physical feelings for her. Then this episode there was the whole thing about how it's all an escape and just about the sex. Yes, Ava needed to be called out on that, but I want Alex to tell her he's on board for more.
With all my favorite shows going into unforeseen limbo, I am really starting to get bummed. The Office, Heroes, Chuck, Reaper, and now Grey's. What will I do with my week nights??
14I too thought the Derek/Rose hookup was forced and awkward like a brother sister kiss. Derek is looking to settle down and when he met Rose he found out she had been engaged once, meaning she's into the settling down thing. They're relationship is purely superficial he'll come to see she has issues too since she said "I'm an imperfect person". I feel bad for Meredith though. I'll admit it took her a long time to get to this point but in her defense the Addison/Derek thing threw her off a bit. She's done sooo much growing this season I'd hate to see her revert back to all her old tendencies once she finds out about Rose. If Mer/Der break up "for good" again I don't think they should get back together, the writers have just drawn this out too long.... Before I forget I was pissed about the social worker comment that Hahn made to Izzy about deciding whether she should be a doctor or a social worker because social workers only have to go to school for two years! The writers really trivialized the profession. I want to be a Marriage and Family Therapist but even I was pissed about that and I know I'm not the only one.
15
GA needs to step it up! Its becoming really really
annoying. The Derek/Rose kiss was so horrible and stiff. Seriously can Meredith get over herself so Derek and her can be happy. Seriously.
16I kinda enjoyed the Gizzie "amicable" end. And yes, I didnt like her at first for some reason, but Lexi is growing on me.
Seriously, Addison where are you? Knock some sense into Derek and tell him he should be with Meredith. Please!
The only thing that I was enjoying in the show was the Miranda/Tucker ordeal and the whole relationship thingy between Karev and Ava. I wish they could both work things out.
Sorry, I had to get that out. GA was one of my favorite shows, whats happening???
LOL sexyeyes!! I was just skimming everyone's posts because they are sooo long, and your short little blurb made me laugh so hard!!
17I loved what Mer said to Hahn- "shut up". We see Hahn learning that these are people not just surgeries.
18Christina telling Bailey she used her because of her skin color- very good.
Also, I just get the feeling that Christina will actually keep Mer/Der apart just so she doesn't lose Meredith right now- she is avoiding her own issues by helping Mer sort through hers- IMO.
Thank goodness I have the dvd's becauase I'll be going back to 2nd season while we wait for new stuff.
I HATE the fact that Derek kissed Rose. I was so angry and the kiss was just weird and gross. Hopefully he does not keep hooking up with Rose but I have a bad feeling he will. I loved the dancing. It was so fun! And in my opinion, Ava/Rebecca needs to go.
I am so upset that a new episode is not on next week but hopefully the strike gets resolved soon!
19I love grey's...even thou this season's been a little hum drum.
Can someone please explain why they feel the need to make certain women look so weak?? Like did derek really need to walk rose through that computer thing last night? I feel like they made rose look like some weak little girl and big strong derek & his bedroom eyes were there to save the day. She's pretty...but i want him and mere together.
It's so obv that hahn and sloan are going to hook up...i don't know whether i like that or not. She's not hot enough for him! haha...but i think it's a good match.
20I can't stand the whole Rose and Derek thing. I don't like her, I thought she was annoying from the moment they introduced her character. They have SO many character story lines going on right now, they need to focus on those and stop introducing new ones!
21That being said, how come nobody mentioned George and the Nazi thing!? I think George TOTALLY rocked that guy and I did a little "GO GEORGE" cheer in my head!
I liked this week's episode a lot. Love how the relationship between Meredith and the chief keeps growing, and it was nice to see the bonding between Christina and Lexie.
I agree with y'all--the kiss with Derek and Rose was just weird and awkward. I know it was supposed to look like they were hesitating, but the kiss totally lacked any chemistry. I'm also just sick of Derek in general, I think.
Sooo...arguing about Ava/Rebecca having a husband as kid is foreplay, eh? That storyline bugs too. Although it did have Karev in the Black Wifebeater of Hotness, so I shouldn't complain too much.
22Great recap, Buzz! As always, Bailey is the show stopper for me; I love her relationship with George and her trust in him to be her voice in the conversations with her husband. George's "can I do charts" comment was perfect. Glad that he and Izzie are over, for now; they are much better as best friends than the are as lovers. Izzie seemed to grow a lot in this episode, realizing that she is not, nor ever will/should be, Christina or Hahn. Like most everyone else, I really don't like the Derek-Rose story line and I'm not really fond of the Ava and Alex pairing. And, Venus Lady, I also was angered by Hahn's put down of social workers and the devaluation of the work they do. Izzie's compassion is something to be celebrated, as long as it doesn't interfere with her decision making when it comes to treating her patients. I suspect Hahn worries about that Izzie's judgment once again will become clouded, but her social worker comment was biting.
23I so cheered out loud when Derek finally kissed someone else! Aside from that, though, I'm so over it. I had high hopes that maybe Seth Green would pull through and be a regular, but it's totally lost it. I've been rewatching seasons 1 & 2 while studying for finals, and it's so sad how far it's fallen. I ended up talking through half of last night's episode because I was so bored.
24*******Georges line about timing couldnt have been more true, and this episode was all about timing right?
-Tucker thinks Bailey doesnt have time for him
25-Hahn tells Izzie that she needs to wait to talk to the families till the time is right, but Izzie realizes that isnt how she works.
-Meredith is counting down time for the paramedic and finally just does it, just like she just finally tells derek that she doesnt want him to date...but she doesnt know that he ran out of time waiting for her and takes the chance with Rose
ok, so rose/derek kiss - what a completely unlikely time to make out! kissing someone as they're washing someone else's blood off just seemed like really inappropriate timing. and then she thanks him like he's better than her an just did her a favor. ugh! plus i think she kind of looks like a cartoon mouse.
i did like how at the end they invited izzie to dance with them afetr sha had said she felt left out of meredith and christina's little clique.
i'm also glad there were no real "miraculous" recoveries like meredith's return from the after life. the cases being realistic made the effect they had on the doctors seem real too.
favorite part of this episode - mark not being able to promise he won't hit on anyone
26I agree, I wanted Seth Green to pull through and maybe be a love interest for Lexi. He is such a great actor.
Am I the only one who is rooting for Derek/Rose? I do think them kissing in plain sight was a little dumb, but I think they should go out and Meredeth realize that she is not ready and will probably never be ready for marriage or kids.
And yeah, George telling the Nazi off was awesome!
27The actress who plays Rose was on Scrubs last night too. She was a patient on scrubs.
28bluesuze, you're not alone. I like them together, too.
29Best part of this episode was when George told the white supremist that if he had been alone with him he would be dead. I loved that line and it made me love George even more. I also loved George and Izzie together, too cute!! I want McDreamy to be with someone normal and good. I'm sick of Meredith and all her whining.
30Things I loved about this episode:
-George's: "Can't I just go do charts?"
-George telling off the nazi
-Chief and Meredith
-Mere, Cristina, Lexie, and all the dancing
-Tucker's impatience ... wtf? His wife's a surgeon... what does he expect?
-Mere telling Hahn to 'Shut up'
Things I hated:
-Derek/Rose kiss --- HATED IT
31-Seth Green died
this season has really gone down hill it's like they are trying to make a great show instead of just letting it be one like it was I can't stand lexie she annoys the hell out of me and I miss Addison she was great but i refuse to watch a spin off show also christina needs to go back to being christina Greys used to be a must see show on Thur but now it's like if i rember or have other things to do then thats fine
32Omg I love Meridith sometime...Dr Hahn....SHUTUP!!! Loved it.
Yeah I was mad at Izzie for copping out to Dr. Hahn...she really should have stood up for herself and told Dr. Hahn that she thinks that the family should know whats happening.
All in all i still love this show!
33I loved George in this episode. Ambivalent about the Derek/Rose thing. I didn't think the kiss was that awkward, just not the right place. I had forgotten about the hiatus. Didn't watch the series until season 2, so that gives me time to catch what I missed in season 1.
34The ending was perfect.
35I don't like Rose at all. What's up with that?! Whatever, it shouldn't last cause in the end its always going to be mer/der
THat kiss was weird, though I have to admit, Derek was very dreamy in that scene.
36derek's hair is not going to redeem himself this time! and i agree, it has put him in the jerk category
merdith seriously needs therapy.
am i the only one that wants burke back for cristina??
37I want Meredith & Derek to make it. Basically, that's the longing that fuels this show. That being said, Rose steps into the picture maybe to test Derek's resolve and how sure he is about waiting as long as Meredith needs. Maybe that was unrealistic of him to say, and he needs to realize that.
I understand Bailey's husband's frustration. At first you're so impressed and in awe of your significant other's accomplishments and job, but after awhile the constant neglect will get to you. It's a bit selfish but it's human.
Hopefully Lexi & Meredith will start to accept their relationship and become friends.
38This show is so ridiculous, and has jumped the shark, that I don't even bother watching.
39I couldn't believe Derek and Rose were going to kiss. I agree with the comments before about how it was awkward, and I think for me it was because it seemed a bit sudden.
However, if I recall correctly, at the end of Derek's big speech about what he wants from her, he said something about waiting but that he could not/would not wait forever. That made me think, foreshadowing of something that's going to affect Derek and Meredith's relationship.
It's a given that they can't just be together--at least not while the series is running. So of course something will test their relationship although Derek and Rose is a bit contrived at this point.
I agree with the majority of what has already been said. The episode wasn't bad but something is missing. Whoever said they miss Burke and Burke/Christina, I would have to agree. I do miss Addison as well and Alex was finally going somewhere with his character last season. Whatever happened with Alex and Lizzie? Where did things go so wrong with this show? Although it is better than last season.
40Hey I was watching season 3 last night. Does anyone remember the episode where Ava's 'family' comes to get her and it winds up not being her family? And the Chief won't support Derek's run for chief b/c he promised Ellis that he'd protect Meredith and he thinks Derek can't be chief and with Meredith?
and thought I'd share...
41Well, all that to say... in the last few minutes Derek finds Bailey and says something about how Meredith is hurting things for him or something and Bailey says "This job is nothing if you don't have someone to go home to." and something like "Choose her over the job." .... Foreshadowing anyone?... Just reminded me of this episode
Why is Bailey's marriage problem so important? Uh did anyone else NOT notice Christina standing up and confronting her? Ugh, give a girl a voice and people still dont listen, or think its important. Disappointing, especially since Buzzsugar didnt even MAKE ANY mention of it at all.
42pintsized- I noticed (comment #18) about Cristina. Very interesting- as if Bailey wasn't already having a bad day.
They got to do more with Cristina and her story line. Definitely don't see her jumping into any relationship, but I just have a feeling she'll be one factor in the middle of Mer/Der so she doesn't lose Meredith to a man!
43Part 2 was better than Part 1 but GA is seriously missing some major chemistry this year. I thought GA may be on the verge of "jumping the shark" but I am not quite commited to announcing the demise of the show. The are some underlying weaknesses when compared with other seasons. However, there were some highlights and some low lights of Part 2.
Highlights
1) Alex telling Ava/Rebecaa to get real. That is why I love Alex so much. Rough and ready kind of guy that pulls no punches...
2) George telling the Nazi guy off. Kudos to George.
3) Cristina telling Bailey off about using her in a racial tough situation. Bailey stood to be corrected on this matter.
4) Izzy seems to be coming back to her senses, whatever senses that can be labelled "normal" for Izzy. (no more Gizzie stories)
Low lights
1) It bears repeating, the Derek and Rose kiss was so contrived, awkward and annoying. Derek is slipping in my book.
2) Bailey being a coward for not talking with her waiting husband. Like I said last week, her marriage is in trouble and I was really hoping that there was at least one normal couple on GA.
3) The death of Seth Green's character. I liked the character and I hoped it would be a positivefor Lexie. (It almost sounds like I am accepting Lexie)
4) No story growth/development for Mark, Callie or Cristina. I wish the writers would fully develop the good characters that they have rather than forcing new (annoying) characters on GA such as Hahn, Rose and Lexi.
The least annoying of the three newest characters at this point is Lexie...and that is not saying very much.
Notice I did not mention Meredith...why doesn't she get some therapy?
I will be enjoying previous seasons of GA on Lifetime. I miss the good old days of GA.
44I agree with leahlarocco- bring back Finn!
45"ughh i thought the kiss between derek and rose was so awkward and weird. i'm not a fan of that hookup at all. i don't find rose an intriguing or interesting character."
Yeah, i thought it was awkward also... I was interested in the Derek/Rose storyline.. and that last episode just killed it...
how long's the hiatus?
46This show just saddened me...I felt horrible once it was over....what ever happened to it's entertainment factor?
