Here's how I feel upon the completion of the second volume of Heroes: 80 percent annoyed, 20 percent relieved. I'm relieved because this first half of the season is over and now everyone can work on making Heroes good again for the third volume, "Villains." I'm annoyed because — along with being a pretty lame episode — they told us "two heroes would fall" in this episode and there are definitely more deserving victims than the ones who bit the dust this week!
I also feel like this season has been a waste so far. Even Tim Kring has admitted as much, which just frustrates me more. I'm going to have to think long and hard about watching this show again when (if?) it returns in the Spring.
For now, some thoughts on this week's final chapter of volume two:
- If nothing else, this week's episode included some playfulness and humor that isn't always present in the show: Maya wearing an apron, borrowed from Mohinder and Parkman, that reads "World's Best Dad;" Nathan and Parkman's rocky landing together; Claire saying to Mr. Muggles, "You won't leave me, will you, Mr. Muggles?" The dog turns and trots away.
- I really warmed to Elle this episode. She's getting more character depth, and more to work with besides just making snarky comments and being weird. She seems like such a little girl sometimes and I feel sorry for her.
- What does it say about me that I’m still attracted to Sylar even when he’s so horrifically evil? No, actually, let's not talk about it.
- Angela Petrelli must have a hard life, being so evil and also a mom.
- West, go home!
- "Hello, Claire Bear." Awwww!
- Monica's situation with the thug trying to set her on fire featured a kind of real-world evil — not superhero comic-book evil — that made me uneasy and scared.
- The Peter vs. Parkman mental argument is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a while. Their jerky heads and contorted faces just look laughably ridiculous.
- So, that would make the montage of heroes at the end while we hear a voiceover of Nathan's speech the second dumbest thing.
- Maya just carries a photo of herself and her brother in her pocket? At all times?
- Nathan: "We’ve been used by these people, manipulated. But it stops here." That's how I feel about this show in general.
- This episode was way harsh on the kids: Molly witnesses all sorts of horrible things and Micah watches as the building containing his mother explodes. Sheesh.
- Great. Now Nathan and Niki are gone, but we're still stuck with Maya and Sylar (and any number of other unnecessary people). I think they killed off the wrong characters. What do you think?
More thoughts (including spoilers) if you read more

it was an okay episode. I loved that hero put adam in a coffin ... thats deep, he's going to be buried alive forever! or until he runs out of air? lol
1oops, that would be 'hiro' ...
2The best part was definitely Adam being buried alive.
The worst part was that cheesy montage.
All in all, another disappointing finale.
3I liked it when Sylar was shooting up like a junkie at the end. I definitely thought he looked pretty hot. And I was kind of relieved when Maya was shot. I only liked her story line because of Alejandro and once he was dead she was too annoying.
4I think they're not dead. It only said "two heroes will fall" not "two heroes will die". They're pretty tricky with their wording when it matters.
5UGH i can't stand Sylar. I was hoping he would die, but I knew that would be asking too much. I just think he's such a lame character. I was super sad that Nathan died. But couldn't Peter give him some blood, he can heal like Claire right? Or does it not work that way? Anyway, I'm not too sad that NIki died, her character was coming to and end anyway, not much else to do there. But I feel bad for Micah, who lost both his parents. That's so sad. I was pissed when they brought Maya back, but then I thought of something. MAYBE she learns to control her power (like focus it on one person not everyone around) and SHE will be the one to finally kill Sylar. Just an idea.
6Hiro rules. As always. Seriously, I laughed out loud when he sees Nathan and Parkman and goes "FLYING MAN!!!!" I was like YAY the Hiro I love!!!
As much as this season has been dissapointing so far, I'm sure I'll still watch it when it returns, just because I need closure on my fave characters. I still love Hiro and Ando so much!
Buzz, it's not just you, I am still in love with Sylar in a big, bad way. And like Party said, when he looked like a junkie with the anecdote at the end, I just loved him a little more
I knew Nikki would be one of the ones to go, though I thought Mohinder would bite it as well. I'm really sad that we lost Nathan, but feel no remorse for Nikki. I've been over her since like, the third episode of the first season.
I'm only glad that Maya's still around because if they had killed her then all that time we spent with her and her wonder twin would have been completely for nothing. Sylar could have gotten himself to Mohinder without the twins at all and we could have called it a day. By bringing her back I'm forced to believe that she MUST serve some sort of greater purpose.
My biggest disappointment with this episode was Claire's detachment from everything else. How disappointing to see her powers diminished to simply being the fuel for the anecdote. No Claire necessary for that, so she was reduced to packing and empty threats.
Let's talk about Hiro for a sec. How awesome is it that he buried Adam alive? But wait, how unlike Hiro is that? He's never done anything that malicious before...I know he had to avenge his father but that was pretty harsh. Cutting his head off would have been the nice thing to do. Additionally, in the finale for last season, I found myself completely frustrated that Hiro kept trying to fight and keep getting knocked aside...and this finale was no different. Homes needs to be more resilient.
Who's for Elle turning into a hero? How cute was it when she realized she saved Mohinder and Molly. "Really? Cool."
Poor Micah and Monica. I hope they become one awesome super hero team.
So, anyone have any thoughts on who shot Nathan?
7I think that there are too many characters@@ Personally, Claire's personal story annoys the hell out of me. This season was not even remotely comparable to last season. Soo disappointing *Sigh*.
8Whoa, hello novel. Whoops. If anyone actually manages to get through that, lemme know whatcha think
9When Sylar is shooting up in the alley at the end, I actually turned to my husband and said, "So . . . junkie Sylar is really hot . . ." I have to agree totally with Phrasekitty and Partysugar on that point.
I am also glad that Niki is dead for the foreseeable future. I've hated her character from the beginning because she's not really super strong, she just has a disassociative identity disorder. I mean, why didn't they do something more with her LA Party Girl Alter Ego Gina? Is that because Tim Kring realized that having multiple personalities is not actually a superpower, even if one of them happens to be very strong?
Aside from Junkie Sylar, I'm actually really angry that Sylar's back. This whole season has been really sloppy, and bringing Sylar back seems like such a desperate ploy for ratings simply because we like him so much. The balance in the scripts just isn't there this season. There have been all of 2 good episodes so far.
I just hope the next season is better.
10i was going to say angela shot nathan but she was in NYC when it happend and they were in odessa right? she was the first person i thought of but now not so much. hmm maybe its one of the other 'heros' in photo........ i guess we have to wait to see
11Totally the wrong characters were killed off! And I'm hoping they bring back one of them and kill of Maya. I really never liked them. But when Nathan got shot?! Boy did I shriek! Anybody else think it was Noah? I thought Maya was the second hero that would go down! (she jus thappened to get back up!) So when Nathan got shot I was quite surprised!
12WHY IS MAYA STILL AROUND?! what purpose does she possibly serve?
i am so frustrated by this show... it needs to redeem itself in arc 3...
13I love Hiro. Flying Man! He's so funny. I was so sad when Nathan got shot and was trying to say Peter. I hope he's not dead. I also liked how Sylar looked in the alley and said "I'm back" He's so bad but so hot!
14I think Noah is a good guess. I was thinking it was Bob becuase he was missing when Elle went into his office looking for the info on her. Also, Angela was on the phone saying she knew it had to be done, so obviously it's someone from that group. BUT since Noah is now working for them again (to protect Claire and his family) they very well could have dispatched him to do it.
15Phasekitty, made it through the novel and i agree with almost everything you said!
i am a little sad to see nikki go though. i really liked her when she was in control of her power and kicking ass in a good way. however, the other 97% of the time she was whiny and is it just me or does she make micah hug her A LOT? i mean, jeez, every single time she says something to him she grabs him and brings him in for another long hug. i feel like that's the only interaction they ever had.
oh well, i'm glad there isn't a huge cliffhanger in case the strike doesn't end and we don't find out what happens for another year. i though the second half of volume two redeemed itself as much as it could for the first sucky half though. i will def be watching when it comes back!
16i literally cheered when maya got shot. and then she came back, and i was WAYYY sad.
loved the gratuitious mr. muggles....always do.
i totally felt for molly and micah....they have both been so traumatized!!
i asked my boyfriend if we could have all our fights like parkman and peter.
i didn't mind nikki being killed, jessica was always more entertaining anways....but i gasped when they shot nathan...so traumatic!!! and i thought it was sad that nikki died in a fire, after DL almost did saving that girl....
and i love elle....i'm hoping she turns good and her and her dad have showdown.
17Props to Phasekitty for the novel. I was wondering the same thing, Buzz, is it bad to think a villain is hot? Also, yeah, I hate Sylar too for being such an awful person, but without him, what is the show? Everyone's happy with no villians? His character adds so much tension to the plot, which is why I keep watching the show.
I agree with Miriam05 on the "two heroes will fall" business. We didn't actually see Nikki or Nathan die. Here's hoping that Nathan has a future on the show - he's turned from a showy, smiley politician to a welcome balancing force.
I read (here? somewhere else?) that Sylar was brought back in part because Zach Quinto will actually be available for more shooting, thanks to the writer's strike pushing future production way back. He's slated to be Spock in a new Star Trek movie and couldn't do both that and the full second season of Heroes. I think a lot of the plot lines were affected by the writer's strike, so this really doesn't seem like the ideal Heroes.
And I totally agree that it is very unlike Hiro, and pretty disturbing, that he buried Adam alive. I was thinking that if he really wanted to kill Adam and finish him, he would have done a little beheading, but I guess now Adam can come back and cause trouble in future episodes. I don't believe he's gone.
Hm, yup, this is turning into a novel too, sorry! I think HRG is a good guess for who shot Nathan - there was a man walking down the hall at the end and I don't think it was dumpy Bob.
18ps - Elle is way better now, she's come into her own, out from daddy's shadow!
19My first word after the show ended: "LAME!"
Why did Nathan have to die? And Niki wasn't half as annoying as Maya or Sylar, plus she's Micah's only remaining parent!!!!! That sucks!
This whole episode was so anticlimactic.
And can someone tell me WHAT the point of West was this season? seriously, he added absolutely nothing to any plotline. He sucks and he should have died. I thought he would turn out to be evil, but nope. I was even hoping he would. he's useless!
20PhaseKitty, i agree with you! yes, i got through that "novel" lol. Sylar is VERY drool-worthy.
here's my question about the kids in the show - don't they ever go to school??? i think we saw one scene of Molly in school in the season opener but that's about it. Otherwise she just seems to only sleep.
I feel so sorry for Micah for losing both parents! he's such a sweet kid but i get the feeling that the bond he formed with Monica will only get stronger and that development will lead to their being a fighting super-hero duo.
As for Elle, i'm really warming up to her too! She's the one who's had the best character development, especially in these last few episodes and i think she'll end up being a good hero.
At that press conference, i thought it was obvious Nathan was going to be assassinated. it was too easy for someone to do it and that's all that was running through my head when he made that speech.
Oh yeah, that montage during the speech was SOOO cheesy. wish they hadn't put them in.
Was it bad that i rolled my eyes when Maya was shot and couldn't wait to discuss it with my other Sugar gals? Too bad she was revived (and i wish i didn't have to say that cuz they need more Latina actresses on tv!).
21I think Noah shot Nathan as well (and you could tell it was a man who was the shooter)...um, but was I the only one that liked Nikki? hmmm, I also feel that Maya is better w/o her twin...who I'm SOOO glad kicked it in the tenth episode! anyways, I did enjoy this finale especially for how rushed it was put together...I think we should really consider how the writer's strike forced them to do this finale...so it's good for what we got! I wonder when Sylar is going to get killed off since you can only allow a villain to get SO powerful...
22OMG - HELLO?? What about that LAME (really, really lame) ending of the Shanti virus? No one's even mentioned it!
That's what the whole season was building up to and then what...Peter just put its in his hand, lights it up in some magic light and poof!, all gone!
That was beyond anti-climatic. It really sucked. I almost wished that the Shanti virus had gotten out.
23i actually like elle, she is like a little girl that constantly seeks the approval and love of her father, although i would love to see what she does to her father when she gets fed-up of not being able to be what he wants her to be, sparks will fly
24Phase you took the words right out my mouth. It was a great breakdown of how I felt about the episode.
Sylar did look hot but I reallty am so sick of him. I mean there is nothing new and thrilling about his character it's the same ol' thing with him. Meh.
I'm so glad Adam is out of the picture, for now. I am so sick of him. I was kind of hoping Elle would save the day but at least she tried.
And Phase I believe it was Noah who shot Nathan now that he has to "go back to the company."
25Miriam05 I agree they never said "die". And it wasn't just two, there were 3 who "fell"...
Monica, Nathan and Nikki.
Dun Dun Dun...
26Oh wait dur, Monica got out. Mental fart.
27Thanks to everyone who made it through my wordy thoughts
jlr32phl-
Nikki did hug Micah a lot! What's up with that?? It was like Full House with those
two!
nicachica- You're totally right about Molly- she's totally narcoleptic! She's slept through like 90% of the show! I never realized that before!
28I, too, think it was Noah that shot Nathan. I don't know, the guy walking away just sort of looked like him a little..
29Does it seem to anybody else like they left a lot of things open (in case they want to use them later)? It sure looks like Niki got killed in that explosion, but I guess they could always find a way to bring her back, if they really wanted to. The same applies to Nathan. I mean, we didn't really see him dead, did we? The news report only said he was shot, not that he was killed.
I also thought that was the reason Hiro "only" buried Adam alive..
First, let me say, that I have not been near as down as everyone else on this season. I have watched each week with bated breath. And while, I was disappointed in some things, sometimes, overall, I still love this show to death. So, on to the finale:
I am 99% sure that it was Noah that shot Nathan. Think about it: the company saw that they were planning to expose it in the vault(red light=camera), Noah made a deal to save Claire which put him back in the Company, and I think he probably agrees that telling the world about the Heroes is a bad idea. Plus, as soon as they showed that person walking away, I said, OMG, that was HRG!
Also, anyone who caught any spoilers or spent anytime online chatting with other fans knew that there would be 3 "deaths"- one reversed, one final, and one uncertain. Maya was obviously the reversed and I am okay with that because we are going to need her to "kill the devil with the blackness inside of her" or take out Sylar next Volume. The final was Nikki, there is no way she survived that explosion, but I am hearing rumblings that Jessica will be back as one of many villians next volume, so we still get Ali Larter hotness without the Nikki cheese storylines. And the uncertain death is Nathan. Can he survive gunshots to the chest? Will Adam's blood that cured him help? Will Peter's blood help? I would say no to both those, but I think that Claire (who now knows that her blood heals others) will come to save her birthfather, so I think Petrelli will be okay.
I also finally started to warm up to Elle in this episode, her reaction to being called a hero was absolutely priceless. And I thought that the end of the virus was a good way to go. We had the dramamtic battles, that would have been more so without the strike and with more time, but Peter creating a nuclear reaction in his hands was cool, I thought.
Lastly, I want to conclude this novel with some tidbits I picked out that I thought were interesting to say the least:
30-when Noah and Bob were outside the Bennet's house, there seemed to be something about their ears that the camera wanted us to catch.
-When Hiro popped into the vault, Adam already had the virus but was reaching for a gold key. Wonder what that opens? I also wonder the significance of all the other items in that vault.
-All the villians lived (even if underground) because the next chapter is all about the villians teaming up to try to destroy the world. Can't wait for that because like the rest of you - I love the baddies!!!
There are still too many characters! They should have kept Nathan and killed off tons of others. Love evil Mama Petrelli. I'd like Sylar but Adam is such a great new villian, I'd happily lose Sylar in favor of more time with evil Adam.
31twinkie7 - your comments reminded me that I was thinking last night about how long either Claire or Adam's blood will help someone. Is it just a one-time thing or do the effects of their restorative blood stay with the person?
And that KEY! I had forgotten. There were a lot of strange artifacts in that room.
32Sorry, this is my last post today, promise, but does anyone know Angela Petrelli's ability? Why has she never used it?
33I was relatively happy with last night’s episode. I was glad Adam finally got what was coming to him. I just find him so much more devious and evil than Sylar. The guy just really creeps me out, and I thought it was a fitting “end” (since my guess is he’ll be back at some point).
I really hope the writers develop Maya’s character a little more the next time around. The last few episodes she’s driven me crazy with her stupidity. The character definitely has potential but needs some work. I know it can happen, because last night the writers did it with Elle. I actually sympathized with her character and cared about her story.
I was really happy to see Nikki die. Her character just did not do anything for me. I think Micah and Monica’s relationship is much more interesting.
Finally, I’m a huge Sylar fan (which definitely has a lot to do with how hot Zachary Quinto is), and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they do next with the character. Heroes needs a baddie and Sylar fits the bill.
34Let me just add myself to the group that loves big bad Sylar. I will be so disappointed if they ever kill him off.
As for Maya, I also gave a big YAY when she was shot, so I'm not too happy they brought her back. I'm really happy to see Elle grow a bit as a character...it will be interesting to see her possibly working against her father in Vol. 3.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if Nathan survives and I hope he does. You'd think if Claire's blood can do it for Noah, Adam's blood should do it for Nathan. Maybe we'll see his bullets pop out the way Maya's did. I'm not sad to see NIkki go either...she has bored me since Season 1.
It almost seems too obvious that Noah shot Nathan. It looked like him, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was someone else.
I hope this strike is over soon!!
35Maya needed to go. Her little latin drama over act over kill is starting to bug me. "You killed MY BROTHER?!" Oh come on girl you KNEW that was going to happen. I would rather have Niki over her.
36Silly 3 - I would think that it is only a one time thing. If not, then the company would have spent thirty years taking Adam's blood and giving it to all it's operatives to make them forever invincible. Plus, just biologically speaking, Claire and Adam are always creating new blood cells, each and every one with regenerative properties, whereas a transfusion of their blood would not change the creation of future blood cells, it would just heal that current wound and then be used up.
37We have never been told exactly what Mama Petrelli's power is, but I think she has used it. In the epi where Peter went to the virus-laden future, Mam Petrelli somehow helped him remember his whole past and she seems to be at least partially resistant to all mind control powers. So, my guess is that her power has something to do with the mind, maybe a mix between Linderman and Daddy Parkman, healing the psyche or something. If the writers' strike would end, maybe we could get the Generations mini-series that would tell us all their powers.
So I have a random question about Hero's time stoppage. I understand that Peter can be in stopped time with him. But what happens if Hero stops time not near Peter does he just walk around until Hero is done? Or is it a radius or proximity thing to be in stopped time with Hero. Doesn't make much sense to be honest. Damn space-time continuum.
Also it seems that who ever dies now they can bring back if they wanted they have shown that. So yes they may have killed off people but I guess the cheerleader (or Adam) can save anyone.
38new-ish thoughts on the episode:
Why Adam was buried and not killed - 'desperate plot device, darling.' And I'm glad! Anybody else thought he looked super-hot walking around with a suit and a sword? rrrawr
What *was* that key? And the Joker-esque playing cards? And the creepy-looking brain?
Umm, Wonder Twins (-1) STILL useless. What else is new?
I actually liked the montage...and apparently I'm the only one.
Okay, and WHAT about...no hugs for HRG? Okay, Mrs. Bennet was all ANGRY and like 'you expect us to just act like you weren't dead?' Umm...couldn't we have tried for at least a LITTLE bit of cuddly and affectionate? What the hello?
39Did anyone else think the look that Sylar had on his face when Maya finally realized he killed her brother was hilarious? It was a "do I seriously have to deal with this now?" look. Amazing.
40i actually enjoyed this episode. i thought it was a lot better than previous episodes this season.. and i'm glad they decided to stop this virus story now instead of prolonging it till next season. having said that - i was disappointed as well with the heroes that were killed and it should have been maya, and adam - that's it.
41I was about 80 percent happy 20 percent disappointed.
Sylar- He is hot, and I am attracted to the evil guys so its normal to me. Him reaching for the spinach can (referencing Popeye getting his powers through spinach of course) was awesome, as was the complete look of annoyance before he shut Maya up.
Peter- Is it just me or does Milo talk out of the side of his mouth like Sylvester Stallone (they were In a movie together , just saying) I am glad he is back on the right side, but it took Nathan to make that happen? Not everyone else on the good guy side? Including Hiro who helped him save the cheerleader?
Adam-He isnt gone for good, If buffy can dig out of a grave so can he.
Elle, Bob- daddy issues, it’s the theme of Heroes isnt it?
Hiro,Ando- I missed Ando, hopefully he will be on more next season. I am glad to see Hiros character grow so much, mature, but still retain his boyish charm, so he buried an immortal dude alive….we all have that bad streak!
Maya-Girl Is gullible and stupid. She didn’t know that Molly had powers, so she just believes that this 8 year old kid is psychic just cause? I would be like “okay kid, whatever” no she busts out a picture and just goes with it. I was so happy she was dead, and than when she came back, I was all “poor mohinder now has to deal with her” I am sure her and molly will bond and they can search out people that Maya hated in middle school and go make their eyes bleed black.
Claire, HRG, West and Fam- Please Claire haven’t you seen x-men, revealing all those peoples powers wont bring the bad guys down, it will make the whole world go nuts. And is her mother melting, or paralyzed, her face is jacked.
Micah, Nicki, St Joan- Of all the people I wanted gone, Monica was top of that list. By the way how freaking LONG does it take to soak a place with gas? And how does a thug who steals kids backpacks go from that to arson and murder the next second? If Nikki is really gone, that’s cool also, her teeth bother me. Micah is the only cool one of the bunch along with his superfly grandma of course.
Nathan- Not dead.
Peter, Mohinder –while Mo-Mo has his place, Peter is just an extra character that I forget is there week after week, until he is on screen and I go “oh yeah,,,him”
I cannot wait for chapter 3. Villians.
42About the picture Maya pulls out with her brother. How'd she even get it?!?! It was from his wedding day, was it not? She killed everyone on that day and then ran. How did she get the photo developed and still carrying it around with her.
I didn't think it was Noah that killed Nathan, but I definitely saw the man walking away (it reminded me of Sylar, but he wasn't near there) so Noah makes sense. SOOOOO sad to see Nathan shot. I was hoping he was wearing a bullet proof something, but there was quite a lot of blood...
I do like Elle, but I thought Kristen Bell was only supposed to be in 5 or 6 episodes, so wouldn't her time be coming up? I love that she and Hayden are friends for real though! I hope they somehow team up on the show, Elle rebels from her Dad and Claire trying to find Noah...
Can't wait for the next volume! As much as I hate Sylar, I love Zach Quinto! And I'll miss sweet Hiro so much!
43Buzz, i totally agree with you about the peter vs parkman and montage being the stupidest things but boy were they good for a laugh
i'm content with how the season ended, only because i am excited for the next volume because "villains" are always more interesting that "heroes".
44they do think they kill the wrong characters
I hope they at least bring Nicky back, I mean... Poor Micah, he could start a world robot war, like a The Second Renaissance and we all have to go and live down earth... not good.
and HTF Hiro could take Adam down and let him there?? there are no space to not touch him and disappear?? Hiro didn't have the time or force to break Adam down and put him in a box??? what? what!!
I want to know, maybe I am out of ideas
and this weeks graphic novel.. more and less, we see how Claire and West met the first time when West was kidnapped by noah.
45Lynne- my bf said the same thing when Maya whipped out the photo. He was like- "They took the time to get their wedding pictures developed??"
46what are you taling about? not watching heroes. it's number 1 show and it's your job to watch
and it's your passion, so there's no way you will not give it another chance, it's addictive and you know it.
this show is like friends, even if it gets bad people will watch it.
47i agree with millysaps - the sylar look when maya was whining about her brother was amazing. during the commercial break my friends and i were laughing our asses off about it. "maya... look around! sylar has killed a relative of everyone in this room! her parents, his dad, your brother. deal!"
i wish maya had stayed dead. i see her offering little to the way of plot. elle on the other hand! i was so pleased that she was actually doing something besides being creepily sexually attracted to every male on the show.
i want to know more about the stuff that was in the shanti virus room! maybe the brain was the brain of a past hero... better keep sylar away. although they never come out and say he eats the damn brains!
silly3 - think angela petrelli's power is persuasion. remember when she touched nathan's wife in a creepy way and suddenly she was ok with abandoning her injured husband?
nathan can't die. =(
48also, not that i care, but is caitlin blipped out of existence now, since the future that she was in doesn't exist anymore?
49Nadia - When they panned up on the grave where Adam was buried alive, you could see that it was freshly dug and filled in. so, I am assuming that Hiro did things the old fashioned way - froze Adam, dug the grave, put Adam in, still frozen, filled in the grave, and then disappeared to leave Adam to unfreeze ... Buried Alive!
50Caryatid - Persuasion would explain it. When she told Peter to remember in the future episode, that could be persuasion as well. Good call. Got any other guesses as to the older generations powers - like Dad Petrelli, Kaito, Grandma New Orleans?
