In a recent Vanity Fair interview , Katherine Heigl stated that she didn't really like Knocked Up because she thinks it's sexist. She says, "It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I'm playing such a b*tch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you're portraying women?"
While I think her character is underdeveloped in comparison to the other (male) characters (i.e. why does she have absolutely no friends?), I'm not sure what I think about the statement that the depiction of women in Knocked Up is sexist. What do you think?
And speaking of Judd Apatow movies, you can currently check out a clip from his next project Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco.

You know if she found the movie sexist she didnt have to do it
She should be grateful for this
movie because it really put her name in the forefront. It gave her more fame than Grey's Anatomy has. I guess she thinks she is too good for the movie now?
Movies like this are the guy version of the chick flick. She did not realize she was in a "guy" movie then she is really dumb
1I just reread her statement and she really sounds like an ungrateful b*tch. Apparently she didnt read the script before making the film
2this is the movie that apparently knocked her asking price up to 6 mil... I think she should be greatful
3She can quit whining about this and buy me a car. That sounds good.
4Uh.. I really don't care. I'm sick of her whining.
5Uh.. I really don't care. I'm sick of her whining.
6JessNess got it on the nose.
7Whining? Its not like shes telling everyone how she thought the script was sexist. Please, put away the hate. Ungrateful huh? Like this movie pulled her out from nowhere and gave her fame. Yeah right.
8I don't think she sounds like a witch AT ALL!! Or ungrateful. Can't she have an opinion that is a bit more complex than "perfect" or "terrible"???
She says that she loved 99% of the movie, but there was just one little thing that bothered her.
It is crazy how people can take 1 sentance and exaggerate it to mean that she hated the movie. Funny, ladies.
9I agree JessNess!
10I didn't find this movie very funny for some reason. I loved the Wedding Crashers and it was offensive so I am not turned off by some crude humor but this movie did nothing for me. Don't know why??
11so is there anything that this girl won't complain about?
me thinks not.
12I don't think it's exactly what she said Jillness, but rather that Katherine has a track record of being whiny, ungrateful, and someone who stirs up drama. I for one can't stand the chick.
13It's art imitating life. My hubby and I saw this movie and cracked up the entire time - esp. when KH's character's sister would yell at Paul Rudd. It's just so true! There are a lot of moms who are uptight and married to laid-back dads. There is humor in that. KH needs to lighten up.
14nomerz, she said:
"Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie.”
15Uh, it's not like it was the deepest of movies to begin with- it is full of cliches, so I don't think that I could really take any of it that seriously.
Anyway, didn't she read the script first? Hello...
16She annoys me, I wish she would quit b*tching about everything.
17I said other because I haven't seen the movie.
18I didn't feel it was sexist, i just felt it was unfunny.
19If she felt that way, why did she sign on to do the film? Wasn't she in the Ringer? She's great at picking films.
See, I think that "ninety-eight percent" comment was backpedaling. She spent several sentences leading up to it expounding on the things she hates about the script and then she says one sentence about having an amazing experience "ninety-eight percent" of the time.
20Also, how is that not taking "1 sentance" and focusing on it?
Why would you be part of a movie that you find sexist?? She's so annoying. And in my opinion, overrated.
21Wow...I kind of want to slap her. After everything Apatow did for her career, you'd think she would be less whiney. He made the 40 year old virgin! Was she expecting to be in a movie about bra burning and women's lib rallies? It's a movie by a guy, starring mostly guys, and directed at the men ages 18-34 demographic. I really don't like her.
22It really bothered me when I was watching it, yeah. But it's a guy movie. And she agreed to do it. She could have refused.
23oh how she annoys me.
24yeah yeah she's true...i'm kinda mad that I didn't notice it until I read this
25Wow, she's really doing a lot to prove that women aren't uptight in real life....
26That was sarcasm, by the way. Tried to speak in a language she'd understand.
27before this movie... KH was the blonde on grey's anatomy that cut the lvad wire... pintsized, this movie didn't pull her out of no where, but its the reason most people know her name...
28I just think however you want to interpret it, it's bad form to be talking negatively about a movie you did when it was like a year ago. If you've got a career like a Julia Roberts or something, and have been around forever and have done some great movies and have a good rep, maybe it's okay to revisit movies from waaaay in the past. But this just opens her up to too much criticism. Plus I think hindsight is 20/20 but not right away. Give it some time, see what the genre and what Jude Apatow does from there, and then maybe you can go talking to Vanity Fair about it.
29I see her point but it doesn't bother me.
30Biting the hand that feeds you, eh?
31wow, i thought the movie made men look like horomone driven idiots. the guys were jerks in that movie. the women were mostly responsible and honest. i thought the part where she and her sister went to the club was perfect. women get old and pregnant women aren't "hot" in the club scene. but for the men nothing has changed. atill chasing skirts no matter how old or if they knocked someone up.
32good point lickety split. the guys were also pretty much unemployed.
no it wasnt sexiest or funny.
33It really bothers me that she would say this even though she agreed to do the movie. It makes me feel as if she didn't do it because it was a passion, it was just for the money.
Besides that, I thought the movie was hilarious. My boyfriend and I saw it once in theaters and then we bought it and have watched it again so far. In my opinion, both parties had a fair share of irresponsiblity in the movie but it was JUST a movie and it's HUMOR.
34Geez, it's sad to see women jump on another women just for being honest about a career move. OF COURSE she did it for the money and when she saw the finished product she was probably dismayed by how it turned out. Having a problem with how women are displayed is not "uptight" or "Ungrateful" - more of the stupid tartletts that pass as actresses nowadays would do well to consider such issues before playing strippers or sluts in crap like "I Know Who Killed Me" and whatever steaming turd Paris Hilton is starring in now.
I couldn't even get past the part where someone that looks like Heigl would ever consider getting with someone that looks like Rogan. One thing I can say is that this movie was clearly a male fantasy film from jump, could it have possibly read THAT differently in the script?!
35I most definitely did not find it sexist. Except for Ben's strange but sweet friends and the happy ending, it was very much like my own pregnancy. That's just how it is when the guy refuses to take it as seriously as the very hormonal chick who's freaking out about the baby she's carrying. C'est la vie.
36well the filmaker is allowed to portray anyone however he likes, its called freedom of speech. and heigl does nothing but come off as the stereotype by rejecting his opinion esp. after playing in the movie.
personally i thought the movie was funny because i find many of the stereotypes to be fairly accurate to fit 20 somethings
take the stick out of your asses people and enjoy a different perspective
37how is it a stereotype to reject someone's opinion? expressing the fact that you are offended by something is also freedom of speech BTW
I'm just sayin'
38Knocked Up is a movie by dudes about dudes. I'm not a dude, but I thought it was hilarious, because I know guys that are just like the ones in the movie. Judd Apatow shouldn't be expected to be able to write a bunch of nuanced female characters for two reasons: 1) He is a boy and 2) The male characters aren't that deep either.
39i don't like katherine anyway, but this just makes her worse. its hypocritical of her to make this movie and let it make her a star and then criticize it and complain it isn't what she believes. no one held a gun to her head to make this "sexist" movie.
40i didn't see the movie as sexist at all , i kinda like it , it's a feel good movie, the kind of movie you don't need to think when you watch it, not everything need to be taking so seriously!
41I can totally see Katherine's point, but it didn't bother me.
She's just trying to make a point to express what she believes in. It's sad that you all think she's so whiny, just because Izzy is. I don't think she's being ungrateful at all, just merely telling it how it is for her.
42I should also say that she's one of my favorite actresses, so I'm slightly biased.
43I didn't think it was sexist. If she thought it was and had a problem with it she shouldn't have done it. A lot of people know who she is now because of that movie she should be happy.
44I don't think that sexist is the most appropriate word, but I do understand and somewhat agree with her point. What irritates me though is that her role in that movie was, for all intents and purposes, a job. She chose to take it on and get paid for it. Of course she is allowed to have an opinion, but what if she had a job like most of us had in an office, and she publicly criticized the work of her employers? She could've found a way to express her view more tactfully- if she had, I would take her more seriously, but as it is she comes across as wanting to have her cake and eat it too.
45i thought it was pretty accurate.
from what i remember hearing they ad-lib'd most of the movie anyway so if she came off as being "humorless & uptight" thats on her.
i like her but shes come a long way from "my father the hero", be greatful.

47I see her point (and I thought her character was b*tchy) but it doesn't make the movie sexist.
48Ew Katherine just stop! What is with this girl dissing her hits?!
49Sexist? No. Stupid? Check. Terrible acting? Check.
OVERRATED!!!!! OVERRATED!!!!!
