Recently the Weinstein Company bought the rights to a book that hasn't even been published, titled I Think She's Got It, by Birdie Clark. The story is said to be a modern-day Pygmalion, set in Manhattan and focusing on "a shy Midwesterner who is transformed into a sophisticated socialite by a man-about-town who insists he can turn anyone into the latest 'it' girl."
The title of course refers to Eliza Doolittle "getting it" in My Fair Lady, which was itself a retelling of Pygmalion.
What do you think about this project? Do you think it could be really cute, or has Pygmalion been rehashed enough?

Sigh....does anyone remember back when the Weinsteins supported cool independant films and helped bring them to the mainstream? This kind of news is just depressing. How many times can people make the same friggin movie?
1Hasn't this been done? I mean yes, She's All That was cheeesy, but wasn't that basically the premise?
2I LOVE my fair lady, one of my fave movies, so as long as they don't rip that off I'm fine. I have no problems with people taking great stories and making them into movies.
I agree with tralalala and Renees3. This story has been made over and over and over.
3This story has been popular for three thousand years for a reason, but I do find the "shy Midwesterner" aspect vaguely insulting. My experience of us shy Midwesterners has been that very few of us need "rescuing," least of all by some stuck-up East Coaster.
4Well, the original play is fine, but the real social message of the play always gets lost in these remakes.

6Bad, stupid, and why oh why are they making movies from books that haven't even been published yet! I mean I get that they've seen the manuscript, etc but it just seems like they pick hot authors and then mass produce this crap. Especially this idiot chick lit, I don't care if it's based on Pygmalion, I've read some really bad chick lit recently. Bridget Jones was great...but can't we try something new now? Did any of you guys see the Nanny Diaries? It was soo bad!

9I did my senior thesis on retelling myths in college, and 'Pygmalion' was one that I studied. I personally would be interested in a fresh adaptation, but I can see if others wouldn't be.
10Let me guess: someone like Jessica Simpson would be cast as the "star." Here's an idea: what if modern society starts creating original literature/films/music/art again?
11There definitely is a difference between a retelling of Pygmalion and a retelling of My Fair Lady. I would like to see a fresh remake where the Eliza character doesnt wind up with stodgey, elitist Higgins, but Hollywood does love a happy ending.
12Well, as far as whom Eliza ends up with, Shaw definitely didn't want her with Higgins, but he was about the only one that felt that way. Even the actors in the original production couldn't help but change the nuances of the dialogue and ad a line at the end that gives it a completely different spin.
But you're right, SaraSmile - it would be nice not to see her fall into that. It'll be interesting to see which way they go with that (in the book, too, I suppose).
And as for gatsby-esque's comment - God, you're right. I hadn't even thought of the casting. Oh, they'd better get that right or else it'll be a complete mess!
And as far as re-hashing old stories, let's not forget that Pygmalion is A CINDERELLA STORY, only in this case Pickering and Higgins play the role of fairy god mother!
