So much for a Fight Club reunion: Citing concerns about the script, Brad Pitt has decided not to star alongside Edward Norton in the star-studded political thriller State of Play. Despite discussions with studio heads and director Kevin Macdonald (Last King of Scotland), Pitt's issues with the script could not be resolved and he pulled out altogether, causing those involved to wonder if the project could go forward. Russell Crowe, now in final negotiations to replace Pitt, has apparently "saved" the studio from shutting down the project.
The cast also includes Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright-Penn, and Jason Bateman, though Norton and Crowe will play the two main characters. In the story, based on the British miniseries, Crowe will now play the "political consultant-turned-journalist who heads a newspaper's murder investigation involving a fast-rising politician (Norton)."
Sad! I was so looking forward to seeing Norton and Pitt on screen together again, and I'm not sure if Norton and Crowe will have the same kind of chemistry. What do you think about this casting switcheroo?

this should be interesting... its funny that the studio didn't mention how brad labored over he film for 16 months
1LOVE IT! I think with the talent level of these two, the chemistry will be great. Plus, I'm not a Pitt fan (I know, I know, I'm the only one...)
2i predict the movie will be The Fountain II
3Perhaps, too much "real" acting was required of Pitt. I think Paul Bettany would have been a better replacement.
4So Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt are interchangeable actors now. Good to know.
5I love, love, love, love Edward Norton!!!! What a true talent!
6Russell Crow is a thousand times better an actor than Brad Pitt, and not too harsh on the eyes either. In my opinion, they've traded up.
7Crowe is much better for the role! I'm really interested to see how he and Norton play off each other.
8BOOOOO! So looking forward to a Pitt/Norton reunion. But I love Russell Crowe and know he'll be fantastic.
9Crowe is not as man-pretty as Pitt, but he is a good actor. The quality of the film will not be degraded by this change.
10Interesting pairing; I think it works.
11Ick, I'm so bummed.
I hope there's still a Fight Club reunion in the future.
12I also like the idea of Russell and Edward in this film. I have never really thought Pitt was a great actor... where I find both Edward and Russell are outstanding.
I always felt tho... Pitt never really picked out the right roles for himself. That he might really be a great actor... I just never really like any of his films that I have seen.
