Ever since the Great Ferry Boat Disaster of 2006, the words "A Grey's Anatomy special event" have struck fear into my heart. I've taken them as a synonym for unrealistic, overblown plot lines and too-sudden, too-tidy resolutions. But I was pleasantly surprised by this week's "special event," if only because none of the main characters died and then came back to life (yet). There were some groaningly predictable moments, but there were also some genuinely strong scenes, so to hear what I thought were the highs and lows, just read more
I assume that two things made this episode worthy of the "special event" tag: the ambulance crash and Seth Green. I'll take the first one first. Grey's has never really established paramedic-doctor relationships, so the stories of the EMTs involved — from the two trapped in the ambulance to the driver who had a seizure to the white supremacist — weren't compelling by themselves. But, as is so often the case on Grey's, it was the doctors' reactions to the patients they were dealt that made the episode interesting.
I recently had a conversation with a coworker about how a show as racially diverse as Grey's doesn't mention race very often, so it was interesting that a white supremacy story cropped up. The plot gave Bailey plenty of chances to be awesome — from "someone will be here soon to save the master race from extinction" to "nobody better ever call me Nazi again" — but it also caused her to miss a date with her husband yet again. Will "rising above" lead to the downfall of her marriage?
Meredith, meanwhile, is clearly going to learn some lesson from helping the paramedics trapped in the ambulance — but what? That she should relish the few chances she has to make a difference? That she should take a stand and not waffle, as she did with Derek and the break-up sex? On a related note, the Chief certainly is acting very fatherly toward Mere these days. It also was interesting to see him moved by the paramedic case, especially during the "I Can See Clearly Now" scene.
Now, as for Seth Green: I thought his story was one of the episode's weak points, and that had nothing to do with Green and everything with how telegraphed it was. Sloan said the artery would blow any minute; Lexie was the only one ever near his room. So naturally, Lexie dealing with the blown artery would be our cliffhanger. A little suspense would have been nice.
As for the rest of the episode:
- So Ava/Rebecca just waltzes in and makes out with Alex? And then he sneaks her into the gallery and doesn't even instruct her to come up with a good lie, even though some of the surgeons helped with her new face? I'm confused.
- Cristina's dancing at the beginning of the episode made me happy. Mere's was a little sad.
- What I know about brain surgery couldn't fill a thimble, but it seems like there should be some kind of backup system set up in case a computer freezes mid-operation.
- My weekly reason to love Erica Hahn: "I was complimenting your surgical skills here, Dr. Sloan, not looking for a window into your wounded soul."
What were your thoughts? Did the episode live up to its "special event" billing? And what were the folks at ABC thinking by making us wait two weeks for the resolution?

I think the Mer-der relationship is going to end very soon, unless Meredith gets it, and committes to him.
ALEX!! why did you have to go and break Lexy's hearth!
When Bailey said, no one calls me a NAZI ever again, i was WOW powerfull moment of the night.
1liked the episode this week - so happy that Gale Harold made an appearance, even if it was as a Nazi.
2whatever.. i like alex with ava... much more than with him and lexie
the artery exploding was gross, and expected.
i really connected with the paramedic storyline.. the poor guy who was going to die no matter what made me cry
still don't like hahn.. will probably never like her. she has some funny lines but i swear she overdoes it (with the whole being a strong, powerful woman thing)
3Great recap, Buzz! Like you, when I heard "special event" and GA in the same sentence, I dreaded the outcome. And, like you, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought this week's episode was well done (with the exception of the predictable Lexie-in-the-room-when-the-artery-blows story line). Bailey, as always, stole the show for me; Chandra Wilson is simply the best. Looking forward to seeing the resolutions to the stories in two weeks.
4I don't even watch Grey's anymore but that Lexie chick annoys the hell out of me. Just looking at her face. Argh. Fakest b*tch ever.
5I'm really sick of George and Izzy...glad they're having issues. Lexi annoys the heck out of me...as does Meredith!!!!Mer & Der are McSickening!!!!Hahn will one day come over to the dark side with Sloan or will have a Lesbian affair with Yang.......A case of power being drawn to power.
6I absolutely loved Bailey in this episode. But I also was dreading this episode the minute they mentioned it was a special event. Special Grey's event means Meredith will nearly die and honestly, the girl can't have any more near death experiences.
I also loved Cristina dancing in the beginning of the episode. Meredith's was not fun. I could've done without Izzie complaining about them being best friends too.
7I knew exactly when the artery was going to blow, so I covered my eyes. Not predictable at all ... uh huh. Otherwise I thought it was decent. I cried like a baby during the whole time that Stan was dying. Ugh, this show never makes me feel good. It always makes me cry. Ha.
8i'm so glad i get to keep up with my grey's while i'm abroad this semester, but one of the things i miss out on are the previews and commercials, so I had no idea this was a "special event" until itunes told me that this was part 1. and i cringed. haha but this one was so much better than that debacle when meredith "died." I've actually been wondering when they would bring up race on the show as well, and I thought it was interesting how it was actually Yang who had the closest (that we know of anyway) experience with the Nazis. If they wrote George and Izzie out of the show right now, I totally would keep watching. I say I miss the old days, but I remember being slightly annoyed by them from the getgo. Maybe it's just whining that pisses me off. Are there any previews for 2 weeks from now? What do they imply will happen?
9i liked the plot well enough. i liked bailey's comment about the nazi. i don't like sloane chasing hahn cause i feel like they are trying to pass it off as he's fallen for her- and that is so not his m.o. especially so soon. i'd prefer him to flirt with her for a while and make it fun before he all of a sudden has fallen for her. i don't like where the mere-der thing is going. she's going to ask him to date only her and he's going to say no and its just so stupid. get it together already. thank god no real gizzie in this episode.
10The storyline with the paramedics made me cry. I also really like the actor who played Stan (he guest starred on "Veronica Mars"), he has charisma.
I'm still a little confused about the white supremacist. His partner is African-American and he clearly seemed to care about her (and she about him), so what's the story there?
11can the writers do something new... alex messing up a potential good relationship, and getting left for a patient again? seriously?
12-first question: Lexie wouldn't get in trouble for the artery bursting right? I know its kind of a stupid question but at the time I was worried for Lexie for some reason (PLUS wouldn't the doctors have given some warning like 'don't make the patient laugh/yell/etc too much'?
-second question: yea that nazi patient thing confused me too. didn't realize until now that his wife was the seizure patient.
thoughts:
-I HATE EVA! for some reason she just really really bugs me and how she always just shows up out of nowhere. I want Lexie and Alex together!
-Cristina dancing was hilarious but Meredith's dance was awkward. And how can Izzie get mad at them for dancing....I didn't quite get that..
-it seemed like everyone else thought it was predictable but I totallly didn't see the artery-bursting thing coming lol.
13I thought it was great. I really enjoyed this episode and cannot wait until next week.
14I want Derek and hot nurse to get together. I loved when Hahn kept busting Sloans' ego throughout the episode.
Shouldn't Seth Green's character have been in an ICU where he is constantly monitored? You knew that artery was going to blow. But no, he was just sitting all by himself in a room until Lexi showed up.
Ava bugs me too. And how stupid was she? Alex told her he could get in lots of trouble if people found out she was in the gallery, and then she goes running her mouth once she gets up there.
15wait, how do we know that the seizure ambulance driver woman is the wife of the nazi man? i was confused as to why he would work with her and why she seemed to like him, but I never got an inkling that they were "together" in some way. maybe i missed something.
16seth greens neck poppin was amazing
17you could see it throbing and then WHAMO.
The paramedics/EMTs are partners but they're not a couple. If they are then we don't know about it yet. But it seems unlikely. They're partners in that they work together in pairs (like cops), but that's it.
Izzie's always been upset/jealous that Meredith and Christina are closer, there have been other episoded where she's b*tched about the two of them being so tight and leaving the rest of them (her) out.
18My favorite line was Bailey saying "My hands might be smaller than a man's, but I assure you, my brain is much, much larger".
Ahhahahahah! Loved it!
19i stop watching because of izzie and george!cause i like izzie with alex...
20Loved Bailey. Thought the episode was really great overall. Even though the Green thing was choreographed to a T, it still makes me want to know what will happen next week.
21we have to actually wait two weeks for Part 2. That is just rude!
22the "white supremacist", to me, was a guy who went through a confused time when he was young-got a tattoo- and totally regretted it and changed himself...it was about time that Grey's got to a racial storyline and I loved the chief's and Bailey's reactions. anyway's...we have to wait two GD weeks??? aghhh why????
23Though Seth Green's plot line sucked (and he stole my brunch table at Lulu's in LA over the summer), the best line of the entire show was:
"My ex girlfriend was a nice girl disguised as a vapid narcissist. But then it turned out... she was really just a vapid narcissist."
24Honestly, I was a bit confused by this episode. It seemed overly long, and like, what exactly did it do to advance the plot of the characters, aside from ending the Lexi/Alex thing? Also, was anyone else a little weirded out that we saw Bailey at home? They never really show her personal life, so it's always a little surprising.
25Oh no, he didn't regret it (the "nazi"). He *tried* to pass it off as something he did drunk and young, and Cristina called him on it (to silence). And he has obviously not changed his ways: he wouldn't let them operate without a white doctor to supervise. The whole thing just made me angry, but it was still a good storyline! =)
One nagging thing (besides "duh, artery explodes"): when the heart patient gets hit with flying debris, he snaps Izzie/Cristina to attention with just awful, awful delivery "ow! hey! ow! my leg! ahhh..." -_- just, wtf? Seriously.
I'm not really sure if I like the new nurse, well I like her, but I hate the way she was introduced into the show; now she's going to be some centerpiece for a few episodes for Derek? I'm good without it, thanks.
As for the special event thing....I've blacked out that entire month, so no big deal.
26I was extremely happy to see Gale Harold. I love him! But it saddened me to see him playing a white supremacist. I know it's only acting but still!
27I was ready to dislike Rose, but I really like her! I hate the Eva storyline; get rid of her already. Love Seth Green, but the whole artery bursting was not only so predictable, but the effects looked straight out of a bad B-movie.
28I was happy to see Gale Harold (from Queer as Folk) back on my TV screen (woo-hoo, sweetpeabrina! Another Gale fan!), but it kinda sucked that it had to be as a psycho Nazi. Oh well, still thought he did a good job with the role.
I wanna be Christina's friend who has dance parties with her. For real.
And Izzie?
Shut up. Since when do Christina and Meredith rub their friendship in everyone's face? It's not their fault that they stayed best friends and didn't screw up their relationship by getting
romantically involved. Cough cough. SHUT UP IZZIE!
Why is Lexie surprised that Alex is turning out to be a douche? Didn't he tell her he was only good for sex? (Still like Alex, though, always will
)
Hahn's lines keep getting more awesome. The "window to your soul" thing cracked me up.
Oh, and more Seth Greene on this show, please. Or any show. Just, uh, no bursting carotid, ok? I almost lost my Thanksgiving dinner over that scene, even though it was a bit too over-the-top. BLECH!
29One thing that truly bugged me about this episode was the way Ava showed up. She just kind of rounded the corner and Alex was all like, "Oh, hi." Before when she just showed up he jumped on her as soon as he saw her and it was all cute. This time seemed really off.
I felt the same way about the paramedics, Buzz- the whole storyline would have been far more effective if we had ever seen any of the doctors interact with them before. That didn't stop me from getting all choked up about Stan, though.
My other gripe was the actual surgery on the Nazi guy. Did we really need the imagery of Bailey slicing through his swastika? Grey's really wanted us to get that conflict. I felt like I was being smacked in the head with a frying pan.
30Avas forehead, more than five fingers. I dont like her, she is pretty smug for a woman who leaves her hubby and baby to go have a booty call, she makes me ill.
31anyone else thinking that bailey's husband's use of a cell phone in the hospital caused the shorting out of that monitor in shepherds surgery? just a thought.
32Thinking out loud again.....
1. Looks like Bailey's marriage is in trouble. However Bailey stole the show, again.
332. I like Seth Green's character. I could have done without the bloody mess at the end.
3. MerDer is already in trouble, Rose and Derek are clicking (to my dismay)
4. Erica, get a grip or better yet loosen up! Her character is getting on my nerve.
5. What part did Lexie not understand about Alex and his arrangement for sex? Grow up Lexie or don't play adult games.
6. Go away Ava/Rebecca.
7. Gizzie is flat lining. Can we call the morgue yet on that relationship?
8. I cried for the dying paramedic and his partner. Good short storyline.
9. Is it me or is the Chief looking hotter lately?
10.Nazi storyline threw me for a loop. Does he regret his tattoo or is he still a dork?
Purple - the chief is looking way way hotter lately! But what do I know. I'm so crazy over men.
