Beowulf killed more than just a couple monsters over its opening weekend, easily coming in at No. 1 at the box office with just over $28 million. The movie enjoyed the widest release for a 3-D digital film ever, and was the first 3-D movie that wasn't for children. The success of the film spells good things for the future of digital 3-D filmmaking.

In second place taking home half as much was animated family film Bee Movie, and American Gangster held steady at No. 3. Following up in fourth place was holiday comedy Fred Claus, while Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium opened at No. 5, bringing in $10 million.
This upcoming holiday weekend should prove successful for studios releasing new titles, like Disney's Enchanted, the Bob Dylan flick I'm Not There, heartwarming family drama August Rush and Stephen King's The Mist. Also, this weekend expect to kick into the holiday season when This Christmas opens this Wednesday.

good news for Robert Zemeckis
1It was $18.75 to see it in 3D. Fun, but definitely not something I'm going to make a habit out of. I'd love for them to do more 3D movies, but for God's sakes lower the price! Great movie, can't believe it was PG-13. If you have kids, trust me. It would easily be rated R if it weren't animated.
2"...the first 3-D movie that wasn't for children."
I wish more people had known this- the showing I saw was riddled with kids between the ages of 8-12. I was completely appalled.
Sticky- I can't believe you paid that much!?!? Was it IMAX? I paid $12.75 to see if off peak at the Arclight in Hollywood. There was no difference in price despite the 3D. Sorry you had to dish out so much for such a mediocre flick. The 3D was pretty cool though!
3um.
4i thought it sucked.
I loved it! They definitely helped set the bar for future 3D movies!!! I didn't even see the 3D version and it was awesome.
5I loved it too, so did my husband - enough to see it twice, once in IMAX-3D and once in DPL-3D for comparison. I read some posters who could tell the difference, but we couldn't. A couple of 3D trailers looked really cool too.
People in the industry are saying that the shift from 2D to 3D will be like the shift from silent movies to talkies.
6Yes, I saw it at IMAX. There is a cheaper 3D version there, but the $18.75 one is IMAX only. I went with nerds, I had no choice.
7(P.S. Of course, IMAX was bigger & better with surround sound. It's THE prime way to watch Beowulf. What I meant by no difference was no difference in the quality (e.g., sharpness) of the 3D.)
$18.75!!!!! Outrageous, they gouged you! Where was this? I've never seen that high a price for IMAX, and Ive been to them throughout California. The San Francisco Metreon charges $15.00 for IMAX, and they didn't jack it up for Beowulf. The matinee price was $10 (same price for kids & seniors 60 and over). So matinee is the way to go.
8I went to The Bridge in Culver City.
9It was actually $17.75, but there is a $1 surcharge for ordering your tickets online. Which, of course, you had to do if you wanted good seats. All the Friday shows were sold out, and the only good seats left on Saturday were at the 10:00 show. I think normal movie prices are $13 or $12.75 at The Bridge, but the IMAX 3D was $5 more.
