Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes often describes Seattle Grace as "high school with scalpels." But this week's episode took the analogy one step further, bringing high school directly to the surgeons by way of a bus crash. As catty girls, awkward outcasts, and backstabbing friends filled the ER, the surgeons ended up reexamining who they were in high school — and, in a few cases, reverting to their teenage personalities. To read my take on the episode, just read more
Maybe it says something about the kind of girl I was in high school, but my favorite story was Bailey dealing with the arrival of her old crush. It surprised me that Bailey could still be so easily wooed by the cute guy who's just trying to use her — but then I realized, she wasn't even Bailey around Marcus; she was "Mandy," the subservient girl who does what she's asked and prays to be noticed. Even George wanted Bailey to give Marcus one of her trademark long speeches; instead, Derek bore the brunt of her ranting about attractive, popular guys not seeing girls like her. (Who else cracked up at the mental image of high school Derek with his afro and band uniform?)
Speaking of cute and popular, the girl with the broken ass (hee!) led to a nice resolution with Callie's demotion. Callie is a rockin' surgeon, but she's not an organizer or a manager. And, like the pom squad ex-captain, she now gets to focus on the part of her job she really loves.
It's a shame that Gizzie ridiculousness nearly ruined the night's best medical case for me. I was touched by the story of the girl who stayed by her best friend's side as he slipped into a coma. But the second Izzie equated that girl losing her friend — who was effectively gone forever — with her losing George — who was very much alive and just not good at hashing out the issues of awkward sex — I was done.
Meanwhile, Meredith and Lexie (the prom queen and valedictorian) hashed out some childhood issues of their own when Thatcher showed up drunk in the ER. It was a nice twist that challenges Mere's idea that Lexie has the perfect life she never got — though Mere didn't realize it until Lexie told her off. And just when Lexie thought she had the upper hand, there's Alex with plenty of tough-life stories of his own, telling Lexie to grow up.
Some other thoughts:
- I find the entire idea of Derek dating Sydney completely hilarious. I kept waiting to find out that Mark had paid her off again.
- Meanwhile, who's that nurse flirting with Derek all of a sudden? I suspect we'll be seeing her again.
- Best line of the night: "You look exactly like her dad."
- I don't know what's with Hahn's respect for Izzie (presumably she still doesn't know about the Denny/heart situation), but it has to be so especially painful for a doctor like Cristina to be told to be more like Izzie.
- When Mark explained the difference between pom and cheerleading, I was hoping he'd end up revealing that he was a male cheerleader.
- Biggest groaner: the Chief explaining to Meredith that she was in the principal's office. Did this show always make things that explicit?
Your thoughts? Are you loving Alex as much as I am? Did anyone else have dead-Mere flashbacks at the promo promising a Grey's event? And what instrument would you have guessed Derek played in high school? I would have said trumpet.

"It's never been this close to home"
...except when Meredith died. And Izzy killed Denny...And there was a bomb in the hospital..and Meredith's mother died...and George's father died...and Meredith's stepmother died...
Exactly how much closer to home could it be? lol
Oh, by the way: I love Derek and Mark. When Derek called Mark dad at the end and Mark grabbed his chest like his heart hurt. Amazing.
1this was a great episode
... meredith needs to go see a therapists and Lexie, Izzie,
Callie annoys me...Cristina was kinda annoying in this episode

My Episode Thoughts on Forever Young
Airdate: November 15, 2007
i really loved this episode... okay yes i love every episode but this one seems extra good. But i dont know what to think about Merder the episode left me feeling very happy but very very worried... im not liking this Rose girl. Like seems nice but i have feel she might be getting in the way of merder and that is NOT okay!
Izzie and George thing was good. Im glad they arent working they are so much better Best Friends!
I actually like Lexie she was good and this episode. She stode up for her self... and that was good. And i kinda feel bad for Meredith because hear her dad was finally saying how proud he was of her and then she finds out that he only says that kind of stuff when he is drunk. so yeah that pretty much sucks for her. But at least she has her Nice Prinsple:] The Cheif was so cute!
I love that Bailey is Cheif now! and i also love that Callie isnt all mad about. i decided i really like Callie.
omg though Seriously i wanted to kill that annoying Bailey old crush guy! WHo does he freakin think he is?
But it was a cute moment betewn Bailey and wonderful, sweet Mcdreamy:]

4I've just watched You've Got Mail DVD and guess who played the cashier in the grocery store where the couple met? it's Sara Ramirez a.k.a Callie!!she looked so different that i had to stare at her for some time before I was sure that it was definitely her. and, of course, the credits at the end of the movie confirms it.
5I liked this episode...but I think I'm just so annoyed by Izzie, that all the things that used to make me like her, are now making me hate her. The long stares, the always empathetic glances, the long speeches...I'm over them. Ok...I'm done.
6i love alex!!
7Isn't the nurse that Dempsey was semi-flirting with the woman who is the new addition to the cast? (they say they might be involved romantically...)

8Pinkflake — that's her!
9Here is my two, or three cents.
I loved Seeing D.B. Woodside as Miranda’s HS crush, Although he will always be Principal Wood from Buffy. Anyway, I wanted to like this episode but again I was rolling my eyes all over the place, Old Greys never had me doing that. Either Shonda needs to check her sugar levels or this show is going to die soon.
My favorite couple Is Dreamy and Steamy, and will probably stay that way since everyone else (Alexie, Mer and Der, Gizzie) makes me ill. The new Hot nurse Rose is cute, she seems more grounded than Meredith ever will be, Yet he still brings old faithful home to rock the trailer again.
The High school theme on this one was a times funny (hot naked cheerleader A$$) and other times sad (poor pencil boy, speaking of which I shrieked when I saw that). Lexie and her beady little eyes can illicit no sympathy from me so I don’t really care if its her under the Ambulance next week, but I wont get that lucky.
When is pacey coming?
10I thought I would cry at the moment between Bailey and McDreamy. I was in the band too, so I could totally relate. (Clarinet in marching band and Bass Clarinet in Concert Band) Who is the new nurse??? I don't like her. Granted, she had 5 seconds of airtime, but I can't see McDreamy with her. I'm not so sure it would ever work with him and Grey either, but I definitely can't see him with the nurse. Just my opinion.
11Bailey steals the show every time for me; she was wonderful in last night's episode. Even though she's moved beyond the Mandy she was in high school, she'll probably never shed all of those memories of the girl she once was. High school memories can be oh so painful for all of us. I, too, would have guessed that Dereck was a trumpet player...or a drummer. George irritates me even more than does Izzie; when I think that he used to be one of my favorite characters, I cringe. The Hahn-Christina story verges on getting old pretty quick; while I like Hahn, I hate how she uses Christina--or maybe I hate how Christina is allowing herself to be used. And speaking of cringing: that's exactly what I did when they announced next week's Grey's "event." Oh, please, not another ferry boat disaster!
12CaterpillarGirl (and anyone else waiting for Pacey) — Here's some bad news. The episodes Joshua Jackson was supposed to star in didn't get written before the writers went on strike, so his appearance is now delayed indefinitely. Boo!
13Alex is the one consistent character on this show--love him or hate him, you know he's going to be the one who tells it like it is, and I love that about him. Ain't too bad to look at either (seriously...I still have that line from last week's episode about "a friendly neighborhood on call room" in my head)!
Loved Bailey's rant to Derek, even though it should have been to her old classmate. When she choked out "oboe" I nearly died. (I was a sax geek myself). Love her. The whole high school theme of the episode did get old after a while, but it did ring true...a lot of people I know never left high school mentally.
I started to like Hahn more, but her "respect" or whatever it is for Izzie is really confusing to me.
Oh, also, my love for Mark is totally growing. He's awesome.
14What is Hahn's deal with Christina? It's kind of strange. I think there's more to the story.
Derek needs to move on with hot nurse. Merideth will never give him what he wants.
Bailey was great in this episode, and Sydney is the most annoying person ever!
15i loved the high school theme, except for the cheif comparing himself to the principal. i've been suspecting an episode like this would happen ever since the second season finale.
derek was never really my favorite guy, but he was great this episode.
i sobbed when he told the girl about her friend.
all of his little moments with mark are adorable, there's something so real about it.
his response to baily was great. and i love that he played the sax, because i played it in middle school.
i'm worried about this "grey's anatomy event". a deja-vu of the ferry boat arc would kill this season for me.
but at this point i wouldn't care if meredith died. she really, really needs to stop being such a b*tch
oh and the whole hahn respecting izzie thing..
16i think it's because of the group izzie is the least like christina. like how all the way back in the first season liz fallon said there were two types of surgeons: those who remebered the names of their patients and those who didn't. i think its because izzie and christina are the extremes of that.
Sorry, but I'm starting to hate this show. It especially peeved me when Bailey was turned into a blubbering idiot - when did all the women on this show become emotional wrecks? All the women (and George) on the show are struggling with problems that, to me, just aren't that big of a deal compared to some of the other stuff that they're already been through. Take Mere's hyperventilation after Lexie told her off. First, how the hell is Mere supposed to know what Lexie has been through? Second, why is Mere surprised that Thatcher is a jerk and a liar? She's known all along that he is a weak, pathetic excuse of a man AND father. Third, can she just get some help or move on already? I'm sick of watching her flounder in every episode. Poor me, I'm freaky and dysfunctional; choose me despite the fact that I run away from you at every opportunity.
And yet I still want Meredith and Derek to be together.
Also, I love Alex, but what happened to his face?? He's all...bloated.
17My main thought at the end of this episode was that Chandra Wilson better have an Emmy next year. jbloom, I disagree with the "blubbering idiot" comment; I think she was just showing emotional range; it really added a whole other dynamic to her character.
18When Izzie was consoling the high school girl, I immediately thought of Denny. I didn't get the feeling she was thinking of George.
19Pincesskitty: good call on the promo
Overall I liked this episode, I'm still not on board with Izzy/George but am very excited to see Derek & Mark together. They're just so cute!
20in all honesty, would derek and mark ever be friends again in real life? i dont think so. but with burke gone(which i know i know he was an ass, the show is really missing him as a character) they need to step up the mark and derek.
i agree that hopefully lexie will be under the ambulance.
and meredith grey isnt my fav, but my heart kinda broke for her. i thought that thatcher might actually have sincere feelings for her as his daughter, and lexie has to crush it. and sort of resolution and healing meredith had(which isnt much cause shes whiny) is gone.
and alex is the best. period.
21dwhite, not to start a lexie/meredith arguement, but the only reason lexie said what she did about thatcher was because of what meredith said to her. it isn't lexie's reponsiblity to control her father's drinking. what meredith said was completely out of line.
22I agree, Meredith shouldn't have said that, but at the same time it's not like Meredith could have known what was going on at home with his drinking. She had no idea what he was like as a father when she was a kid, so much more when she's an adult...
23I thought the episode was entertaining, but I wanted to scream at Bailey for being so weak. Also, I HATE Lexi! She annoys the crap out of me. I used to like Izzy but she is so irritating now. The Izzy and George thing is just weird. They don't go well together. I do love the McDreamy/McSteamy thing. They are very funny. I like Alex too, he is not trying to be someone else and is up front about his intentions. It is also interesting seeing Callie and Christina being friends. Callie has grown on me and I like that she is going to be strong on her own. Merideth really needs therapy. She needs to learn how to be stronger.
24actually, it is your responsibility to take care of your parents when they are out of control and irresponsible. and meredeth had no idea what was going on at home. and meredeth still wouldnt know if lexie wouldnt have blown alex off when he tried to have her handle it.
25i have a question: what did that guy say to Miranda after he had his surgery and before he fell asleep? something about a paper?
i was so so happy that lexie told meredith off for some reason! it was such a good scene.
wow the tension/rivalry btwn Hahn and Bailey!!!! :|
i'm not much of a McDreamy fan but who else thought that he looked extra dreamy this episode?
ew pencil in the eye was pretty disgusting
p.s. who else is stoked for nxt week's episode?!
26um did anyone else notice that marissa (pencil boy's bff) was grace sheffield from the nanny??
27izzy was talking about denny .. and i didn't get how the "principle's office line was meant to be explicit????
28skiwi...
He asked her to finish filling out his paperwork.
29The episode was okay, but way too obvious.
I can't stand Lexie (I don't want to be mean, but I think it has to do with the actress...). Meredith didn't know her dad had a drinking problem + her dad told her it would've been Lexie's mother's birthday, hence the comment "you should keep an eye on him".
I didn't find Bailey's storyline believable.
Still rooting for Callie and Christina ! I can't wait for Dr Hahn to find out about the Izzie/Denny/Heart story...
30Season 4 is a huge improvement on Season 3 but I'm not liking how they have to make the whole "theme of the episode" so obvious. I cringed so many times this episode, especially when the Chief was talking about the "Principal's Office".
31That said, I did really like this episode.
1. Alex continues to be my favorite character.
2. Unlike some people, I like Lexie. I think she was right to tell off Meredith after Meredith's "you should keep your Dad under control" comment.
3. McSteamy/McDreamy = the best couple BY FAR
4. My favorite scene was when Cristina was trying to be calm and walk slowly down the hallway but ends up doing some sort of sprint/walk/weird-hop-type-thing.
5. I didn't see the previews for next week but if anyone half-dies again, I may stop watching. Haha, who am I kidding, that would never happen.
laney, it took me half the episode to figure out who she was....and then it hit me, from the nanny!!
and omg, i was SOO glad we got bailey back in the end....her whining and giggling and all that was too much....i was getting annoyed, and i NEVER get annoyed with her!!
and no pacey??? =(
32bina324,
I like Lexie, too. And I was glad that she told Meredith off. Meredith has been telling Lexie what do to all season...stop being like me, don't talk to me, don't be friends with my friends, and so on...so I'm sure Lexie's frustrations with her dad, and Meredith actually trying to give a damn, finally brought her to a boiling point.
PS: I just over-analyzed the CRAP out of that scene...hahahaha
33hmmm... who wants to bet that burke and hahn had a thing in the past, and that's where all her dislike for christina coming from?
34Where do I start?
1. I am happy that Gizzie will be laid to rest...finally.
352. Although I am no fan of Lexie (at least not yet), I am so glad she laid into Meredith concerning their dad. Meredith deserved to be told off.
3. It was sorta nice to see Bailey in a different light (teeny bopper crush). I am glad Shonda is waking Bailey's character up from the grave.
4. How can anyone not love Alex? He is so honest and unpretentious. Lexie needs to appreciate him more as a freind not just a bed partner.
5. I really like Callie, whay can't the writers do more with her than have her stand in the shadows? Could she not have been pregnant with George's child at least?
6. Hahn is awfully hard on Cristina...what gives?
7. Derek & Mark are impishly adorable
I would like to echo the McSteamy/McDreamy love...definately the best couple on the show right now.
I don't mind Lexie and I think her and Alex have an interesting dynamic going on right now. Plus Alex is another constant and consistent favorite of mine. He always has good lines and he is awesome!
I wish Izzie and George would just go away. I could care less.
And for the love of Pete, they need to either get McDreamy with Rose, and stay that way, or get him with Meredith, a house, a picket fence and 1.5 kids. I am so freaking tired of the back and forth, up and down between them. It is so redundant at this point and painfully annoying.

37I would gladly watch 2 more years of back and forth of Mer/Der than one more episode of Grizzie. Seriously.
38I loved the part where Cristina was trying not to run down the hall when Dr. Hahn paged her.
39AWWW! I miss grey's! Come back grey's! Come back!
