This week, it really felt like everything was in transition on Grey's Anatomy. After weeks of keeping their affair a secret, George and Izzie finally had the chance to be together. Callie and Bailey reached a breaking point in their co-chief-resident arrangement. Mark developed a new crush. Cristina took steps to erase all traces of Burke from her life. And Derek and Meredith ... well, OK, they're pretty much the same. To talk about the episode, just read more
Oh, Grey's Anatomy, with your over-obvious metaphors. Did every single patient have to be an example of some sort of magnetism, whether emotional or (groan) actual? And did Izzie really have to say aloud, "Even they have chemistry?" However, if the whole thing was in the service of pointing out that Izzie and George have no chemistry, I can work with it. Somehow I'm relieved that their experience of sleeping together ended up paralleling many viewers' experiences of watching them sleep together: pretending it might turn out OK while secretly wanting to vomit.
So of course, I had to want to slap someone else in this episode instead. Lexie Grey, please come forward! All of these Seattle Grace interns have done inappropriate things in front of patients, but Lexie takes it to a new level. It seems that every time she's on screen, she's having some ridiculously personal conversation at a ridiculously terrible time. It is interesting, though, that she has such a strong desire for approval; that's one character flaw we rarely see from Meredith.
Bailey, meanwhile, has ascended to her rightful place as chief resident. Initially, I thought she was sabotaging things — telling Cristina to get a new specialty, purposely disobeying protocol — to get Callie in trouble; it wasn't until her conversation with the Chief that I realized she said and did all those things because she thought they were right. I was a bit taken aback at her breakdown after the Chief offered her the job, though; of all the things Miranda Bailey would do at that moment, crying was the last one I expected.
Some other thoughts:
- So between the awake surgery last week and the myriad brilliant decisions Hahn made this week, she's pretty much God's gift to medicine, hmm? It's made Mark have a crush on her (how awesome was Hahn's list of rebuttals to his attraction, including how hot she looks with her hands on a heart?) and it's made Cristina even more envious of everyone who's blocking her path to cardio.
- While I hated nearly everything about facelift woman and the man who couldn't poop — both together and separately — the "I was just thinking about this crap I took in the Army" line cracked me up.
- It was nice to have Meredith's problems take a backseat, wasn't it? She was, for the most part, blissfully un-whiny this week. Plus, she got one of the night's best lines: "I saw my half-sister half-naked."
- Bailey was making the schedule for December, so we must have made a big leap in time at some point, considering it was just recently Halloween and the new interns started over the summer.
- What are we supposed to take from Thatcher being a drunk (other than the almost certain possibility that Mere will find out)? Is this his reaction to Susan's death, or has he always been an alcoholic, dating back to when he left Ellis? I'm sure we'll soon find out.
Your thoughts? Where did Lexie fall for you on the cute-to-slappable scale? How great was it to see Joe's Bar again? And have you ever seen a worse DeNiro impression than the Chief's?

Meredith is getting on my last nerve. Sure her sister is like little puppy dog, but she doesn't need lashed out on her because of her issues from childhood. Alex is right to tell her to ignore Lexie, even if she doesn't want to be cordial. Ugh. She's just not a good protagonist.
And I guess Gizzie is taking a curve. I didn't realize things would change so soon. We'll just have to wait and see if their bedroom problems is a make-or-break deal.
And that poor kid with the magnet! That was really scary! But if anything, you'd think that the kid would ask for his parents to seek counseling. A divorce seems pretty extreme.
Anyway, it was a good episode, even if I still find Meredith annoying.
1I love it when Mark said "She has beautiful hands..."
then Christina was like "
"
Mark: .. "For ..finesse, i mean
"
Can't believe Hahn would turn that down. Mark is hot
I can't believe Callie was fired
Ew to Gizzie.
I love Cheif lol his impressions were hilarious.
Mcdreamy needs a house. Why still in a trailer? you're a doctor!
haha jk
2I had missed it last night, so I just literally got done watching it online...
I felt like Grey's was back to it's old antics - the pace and the wit and the fact that mere was not dark and twisty the whole darn time.
Still love Mark and Derek.
Wondering what Cristina's going to do about Hahn... b*tch slap showdown?
And yes, I also thought that Bailey's breakdown was out of character.
3Oh yes... and how excited was I when Gizzie finally admitted they had no chemistry!
4Izzie and her "box of fun"
5The beginning was funny though when she was saying George "pecks like a chicken"
Good episode. Lexie needs to chill out but Meredith is a total b*tch to her. Gizzie is annoying but I'm glad they are aren't perfect together. I love the chief and McDreamy and I am really lovin Hahn! I'm sure she'll see Christina's true cardio colors sometime soon and repent...
6i'm so ready for gizzy to be over, but i say that all the time!
and i feel awful that thatcher is hitting the bottle that hard - that is so much for lexie to deal with at home, it makes the storyline of her wanting to be friends with merdith stronger because she needs the support. this might turn out to be an okay streamline.
also, whenever alex makes out/makes eyes at/ anything with a girl, especially ava, it's so damn hot. he's just GOT IT.
7oh was callie fired from seattle grace completely or just from chief res?
8I do, personally, think Thatcher was always an alcoholic. I think it's supposed to show that Lexie didn't get a perfect life just becuase she had Thatcher in it.
I really like Sloan. I hated him at first, of course, but now he's one of the funniest and often sweetest characters on the show. Love 'im!
I love Bailey! Yes, her breakdown was out of character, but I think it's because not getting Cheif Resident in the first place really effected her. And I like how they handled it, they didn't act like it was in character, the Cheif looked as stunned as I did. lol
Speaking of the cheif, I love him. I liked that we got to see that he isn't a genius at everything, like taking care of himself.
I like Lexie. I honestly do. I think she's sweet...kinda like Izzie was before Denny. She just cares a little too much. I loved her five things you know about me thing and how Meredith responded to it. I don't think Lexie wants Mer's life, she just wants her sister.
"Yeah, she plays the trombone, and whatever, just take my sister home." Very sweet.
I love Hahn. That is all.
Ok, I'm done now. lol
9On another note, I love how Hahn responded to McSteamy's come-on in the bar. It was really cool and inspiring!
10I like Lexie. I was glad she finally stood up to Mer and told her to go screw herself. Meredith is having a hard time, I think she has a reason to be as crappy as she is to Lexie but with time I think they will end up being really close. I was very glad Bailey finally got the job of Chief Resident, and as much as that sucks for Callie, I think she will be very happy going back to being just a Resident. Obviously during surgeries are what makes her happy. I was on board for the whole Gizzie thing, but after last night I am over them. I hope they can realize they are truly best as just being friends. I love love love Dr. Hahn. Mark is in no way her type at all and I am glad she called him out on it. I love that for once Cristina is not getting what she wants most. All in all I loved this episode, I can't wait for next weeks when Mer's father comes to the hospital.
11I was wondering the same thing as laneylaney...Was Callie fired from the chief resident position or from the hospital?
12Hey Buzz, Bailey making a December schedule is actually sort of behind. I work in administrative support for a medical school and we're working on wrapping January's schedule up now. We're usually a couple of months ahead due to all the things that go into scheduling residents, interns, faculty, etc.
13If Callie's fired for real, I might boycott.
14I love Lexie. I think she might be rivalling Callie and Cristina for favourite female character.
did no one love that mcdreamy kept joking derek and the chief were dating??? SO cute!!
and while it sucked that callie got fired as chief resident....it was nice to see her all stoked about surgery beforehand. i need sassy, semi-snotty callie back. she's much more fun than the whiny one.
15KellyO — Good to know! I was bracing myself for there to be a Christmas episode, like, next week.
askmetostay — With all the other Bailey/Callie stuff, I totally forgot to mention that I loved her rocking out in surgery. I hope they come up with something awesome for her to do now that she's not Chief Resident or married to George. My understanding is that she's fired from Chief Resident but she's still a resident at Seattle Grace. Anyone know if that's how it would work in real life?
16Okay so this episode was good it wasnt my favourite though... All the Gizzie stuff like made me sick. But i loved the Meredith and Derek stuff!
I was laughing so hard when the cheif walk in on Derek and Meredith... He's so funny. He runs out covering his eyes with the movies.
And i feel so bad for Callie now for sure. She lost her husband and her job all and one month. Man that sucks.
But when Bailey got the job it was adorable how she just started crying and run into the Cheif's arms she is gonna make the best Cheif resident ever.
So what are your guy's thoughts about Gizzie? They dont seem to be working out very good. i just wonder whats gonna happen with them.
I do feel bad for Lexie though. This must be so hard for her. Her mom just died, Her dad is always drunk and she is starting her first year as an intern and one of her bosses is her step sister and went even talk to her without saying something like "Go away!" I am proud of Alex... That was big of him to choose to be on merediths side and it was also big of Meredith to choose to be nice. haha i loved when meredith goes "Alex, Take my sister home. Take my sister home she plays the trabone and whatever" lol i loved that scene.
oh and Mark having a crush on doctor hahn is adorable i think. He is like alittle big:]
And the thing with Derek and the Cheif was so funny. He had Derek getting doing his laungry. Hes so cute!
17just wanted to say i love this episode and i wanted to subcritbe to these comments because i love hearing what other people thought but i forgot to press post & Subscrible and thee last comment so lol im subscribing now:)
18You know I might be in the minority...but I like Meredith, yes she gets a bit whiny but everyone on Grey's is a bit whiny. It's completely normal for her to resent her sister, a sister that she does not know, that suddenly pops into her life and invades every aspect of life.
The whole thing with Derek and the chief was funny but a bit lame.
I liked Hahn's rejection of Mark and I do agree that I'm glad we did not actually see Gizzie making out.
19Lexie as always is trying too hard and I think Izzie and George are not going to make it....
20I thought I remembered an earlier episode where Lexi was complaining that since her Mom died, her Dad was always drunk. So maybe this heavy drinking is somewhat new? I don't like Lexi very much. She is pathetic. George and Izzy are by far the worst though.
21Dr. Hahn is such a great addition to the cast; her interactions with the rest of staff are wonderful. Bailey's insight into Christina was wonderful too; she wants to push her to fight for her dreams. So glad she will be Chief resident. Her tears were uncharacteristic, for sure, but they allowed us to see how much she has been holding in after initially being passed over. Callie now has a chance to really soar at something that she is really good at; she loves being a surgeon and not an administrator. Maybe she will spark Christina to keep fighting for what she really wants. Loved Sloan last night and near the end of the show, when Meredith asked Alex to take her "sister" home, I smiled and for once really liked Meredith as well.
22Wasn't it a Marlon Brandon impression?
23Maybe I wasn't paying to much attention this week...?
For me, the most compelling and touching story line wasn't about the crazy regulars, but the father and his adopted baby. Interesting no mention of it in the recap or comments.
24Lexie is cute. She reminds me of Claire Danes in My So Called Life, in her mannerisms and facial expressions.
I'm going to confess something. I'm not so sure about Grey's anymore. I was hooked hooked HOOKED on this show, the end of last season I kind of petered off and missed the last 4 episodes, then I hurried to catch up for the new season and to be honest....Nothing has happened yet that I couldn't have stood to miss. I used to get emotional almost every episode. Now...nothing.
Maybe the writer's strike will be good for this show, some fresh ideas when they come back.
Is anyone else getting bored with Grey's? I really want to be obsessed with it again.
25i didn't love that baby storyline - we all knew what was going to happen. and we all knew he'd give in. or maybe i'm just making me, we, but still.
26The whole Gizzie thing irritates me - George blew off his marriage for a relationship that isn't even going to work for a little while? Not liking that at all.
27Well, I'm in the minority with you Biz
I love Meredith! I always have.
Jason, I agree...I loved how he finally came back to the hospital and said he remembered a 6th thing. That was really sweet. You could see he had grown to love the baby.
Overall a wonderful episode! Loved it all!!
28I've missed C-Note on Prison Break, so it was nice to see him on Grey's, playing basically, the same character. I am still on board with the show, even if it mostly annoys me.
Marc/Hahn are hilarious as were Derek/Chief.
29I hate Lexie!!!! I love Grey's Anatomy!!!
30I have some questions about this episode:
-why exactly was Bailey trying hide the fact that she was in charge from the cheif?
-what will Callie become after being fired? just a resident or?
31i like meredith too. i feel like you can understand why she's so messed up, so i give her a lot of slack. i don't hate lexie... she's is like a little sad puppy though.. always wanting approval from mere. ok alex is so freaking hot he drives me crazy. i hate that he's such a jerk but damn.. i can forgive him lol. i love cristina and i feel bad for her. hahn needs to wake up and see how amazing cristina is at cardio!
32JLMac-You're right. There was a Marlon Brando impression, but later there was a DeNiro impression and they were both terrible.
33Did anyone else feel like this was the episode in which they tried to fix all the stuff they screwed up in last season's finale? I did and I was so glad! Yay for Bailey, yay for George and Izzie realizing that it's not that kind of love (it's bound to happen)... it made me very happy.
I'm in the minority also - I've always liked Meredith. I like how damaged she is; it makes her more real to me.
I really loved Hahn's rebuttal to Mark. Hee.
34does anyone else really, really not like meredith grey? like, i get where some of her issues are coming from, but she really needs to just grow up. she has no good reason to not want lexie to date/hook up with/be friends with/talk to alex, unless she's into him. which would be way weirder than george and izzie. and if someone is making that much of an effort (even if its not always at the best times) you could at least aknowledge that and be somewhat friendly. just putting that out there.
best line of the night, when christina said she was painting her walls red... like blood.
was callie fired fired? or just fired from chief resident?
i thought the akward gizzie sex seemed really contrived, like the writers couldn't think of any better problem to give them, or they just wanted an easy way to end their relationship.
35I agree with Jason, that adopted baby father story made me cry.... the other stuff was just expected as the producers got to bring the show closer to what the watchers want -- based on the bad feedback they got after last season finale.
36Oh yes that was not Deniro's impression -- that was Marlo Brando's impression and it was rather spot on.
Btw, I think Callie is just fired from being a chief resident, she is still working there.
37Actually the Chief did do a Deniro at the end of the show "you talking to me" from The Taxi Driver. That was in addition to the Brando impression earlier. The Deniro one was not really spot on.
I liked this episode. Was also confused whether Callie was just fired from residency or from the hospital all together. Hope it was the former. She is one of my fav characters.
Also like Lexie. She does seem needy but she also seems like such a good soul. Like another poster said, like Izzy before Denny. Apparently, though, Lexie is going to be the only intern we are ever really going to see. The other ones are barely ever mentioned anymore.
Can't wait to see what punches Cristina pulls out to get back into cardio. Love Hahn!
38I adore this show!
39I'm actually glad that Christina's finally getting some karma back. She's such a horrid biotch most of the time, so more power to Hahn for giving her a hard time right back. She's starting to annoy me almost as much as Meredith.
40Also, page6lovers, I totally agree with you about Meredith needing to grow up and get over her "issues."
41I have never had such mixed emotions for a tv show before in my life. At times I yell "cmon" or roll my eyes because its so freaking cheesy "five things you know about me now" blah blah blah. Other times i am weeping or laughing because it strikes a chord in my heartstrings.
My remedy is this:
STOP with the george and izzy thing, all it does is perpetuate the cheesiest, most unbelievable lines and situations ever in the history of Greys.
SMACK some sense into Lexie and make her behave like she has some brains.
GIVE christina back her MOJO
TRY not to make every episode one where Izzy bonds heavily with some patient.
42Right on, CaterpillarGirl!!
