I normally hate holiday episodes of shows, and the promos for this week's Halloween-themed Grey's Anatomy had me fearing the worst. But this episode wasn't nearly as cheesy or faux-spooky as I was expecting. In fact, it was pretty great, and not just because one of my pleas was answered. To my thoughts on the episode, just read more
They hired Dr. Hahn! And I swear I didn't know it when I wrote this! She's the new head of heart surgery at Seattle Grace, which makes perfect sense — and which should also set up some crackling dialogue between her and Cristina, given that within 10 seconds of seeing each other, Hahn managed to accuse Cristina of sleeping her way to the top. Hooray!
Boo for George and Izzie — and not for the usual reasons. What bugged me this time was how little we saw of the aftermath to George's confession. Yes, Callie told the whole resident crew that Izzie slept with George; yes, we got the (awesome!) scene where Izzie yelled at Cristina for having one standard for her and Meredith and another for the rest of the world. But after all that turmoil, I'm surprised they just leaped headlong into a relationship.
Speaking of turmoil and relationships: Ava's back. Now, look, doctors at Seattle Grace have done plenty of stupid things before — but Alex making out with Ava in front of his intern? That was a little bold. Once again, Alex didn't make it back to Ava in time, but she did leave her shirt; she might well be back. (Also, what did she leave the hospital wearing?)
Two characters almost brought me to tears tonight: Bailey and Meredith. Bailey worked so late helping everyone else that she missed her own son's first Halloween; Meredith realized she needed to let go of the damage her own mother caused by being unavailable. Bailey has so much more heart than we ever saw from Ellis, but will she lose that compassion if she keeps choosing work over family? Meanwhile, it was a big moment for Meredith to accept that her mom was happiest at the hospital; washing her ashes down the scrub sink was a way of leaving her to rest where she truly belonged.
A few other thoughts:
- Poor Norman; I'd been getting used to him, but I suppose the Old Intern stuff couldn't have worked for a whole season. He did offer one of the most accurate assessments I've ever heard of Grey's: "You surgeons, you're all just a bunch of little children running around with your scalpels and severed feet and inappropriate sex in inappropriate places."
- The scene with Cristina and Callie giggling over the ridiculousness of their lives was one of my favorites.
- The guy who tried to cut off his own foot freaked me out, but it was a pretty stark representation of what happens when your life no longer feels like your own — especially juxtaposed with the story of the father who could get his life back if he accepted his own daughter's heart.
- I loved Derek and Mark pranking each other. "Daddy?" Hee. Also, how cute was the boy with the ears? I won't even get into how unrealistic that story was, because it was just too adorable.
- "Lookin'. It sounds way dirtier without the 'g.'"
- Why does Derek have to start dating? Last I checked, waiting does not equal dating.
Anyone else cheering over Dr. Hahn? Loving Callie moving into Cristina's apartment? Wondering how long Gizzie can last? Tell me below.

Meredith carrying around her ashes was a little ridiculous to me, especially when she washed them down the drain!
1*her mom's ashes, whoops!
2I feel like Gizzie is this thing where we're stuck in a national version of "Same Song, Next Verse", you know? Or, "The Song that Never Ends". You know that it can actually stop, and that it should, because it's pissing the hell out of most of the normal people in the world, but you just don't stop it.
Please, Grey's, I beg you. Stop the song. Just stop it.
As for Dr. Hahn, that's actually what I thought when Chief announced that she was hired. "Buzz will be happy!"
LOVED Callie and Christina in this episode. LOVED how they brought Rebecca back. LOVED Mer carrying dead mommy around in a ziploc. Loved Mer washing Dead Mommy off of her hands even more.
3Loved Izzie telling Christina off...whatever about her being all judgmental!! Seriously! For any of them to judge George and Izzie is pretty funny - and I say that as someone who totally hates Gizzie...I love Izzie and I like George but Gizzie must die...I loved when Meredith asked them if they were in sexy love and not brother/sister love - that was great. Callie once again showed why she shouldn't be Chief Resident (or whatever it's called) by announcing Izzie will report to Bailey because she slept with Callie's husband. Umm, hello Callie that makes you look as dumb as Gizzie...like Bailey said to George it takes two...who marries a guy you've barely dated and 10 minutes after his father dies...And I know many will disagree but Ava is a dud. Alex is all the heat in the duo...icky to lay in bed with another man and talk about how much you and your husband each love your daughter but don't care about each other - that's pretty defective - yuk to the max.
4Derek is a boob. Gosh darn it, I guess he'll have to start dating.
Still don't like callie, but did like the little laughing episode in the OR.
Poor Norman, but it really was time for him to go.
I can't believe you predicted Hahn coming back!!! Maybe she'll grow on me.
I'm still rooting for Private Practice to get cancelled so Addison can come crawling back to Grey's.
5Forgot to add that I love Meredith and the carrying of dead Mommy in the zip lock and ultimately putting her in the drain of the OR and loved that the Chief was there to help...My brother actually had to carry our Granny's ashes with him to the gym and leave her in his gym locker (looooonnnnnggg story)...he actually stood looking into his trunk debating whether he could leave her in the car but decided that would be disrespectful and opted to put her in his locker...to me Meredith is the most real character on t.v. She's messed up and yet manages to function. Love her. The show is named for her for a reason.
6Derek pranking Mark was the best part of the whole episode! I was so shocked and then laughed for forever! I had to rewind to catch the rest of the story line
Bailey being excited about the contest of cutting pumpkins with chainsaws was hilarious! Seems like something Cristina would be excited about.
Pissed at Derek (even if I did love the prank) ... you are right Buzz... waiting does not equal dating. He said "What IF I meet someone" not ... "I'm going to be looking". He completely implied that he would wait for Meredith and if someone happened to catch his eye he'd deal with it then. He never said he would actively look for someone to replace Mer. Him basically going back on his word pisses me off.
Oh and it's just me but, I can't stand the blending of names 'Brangelina' ... 'Gizzie' eh...
7This was the best episode all season, I think! The only one this season that has made me cry. Yay for the return of crying during Grey's!
8i loved Callie & Christina, I loved "daddy" to Mcsteamy, these were the highlights to me.
9The "chemistry" between George and Izzie is non existent, and I cringe at watching them together "in love". Reminds me of Rachel and Joey on Friends. I hope the same thing happens...They try to do the relationship thing, but realize they're better off as friends.
10Gizzie wont last long, mmm...they did it drunk, and i don't think it will be the same after :)but we shall see
I loved Bailey's speech about her life and marriage, she really showed a real side, something we don't normally see in the Nazi LOL i felt bad but she does make a point, life sometimes is B/W, for so many people, not only in relationships, just in general
i KINDA liked Lexy this time, i kinda relate with her, loved how she told Meredith about the cat, hahahaha OK she has grown on me, and so funny at the beginning with the costume
I hate Derek!!!!!! why is he dating???
go AVA and Alex!! i loved them together, i hope it progresses, just what he needed
11I only saw the last 5mns with the whole ahses down the sink.
12*ashes
13I really liked this episode. Possible Callie/Christina friendahip? I love that idea.
But also, I love that Meredith is trying to grow so that she can really be there for/with Derek. Although Derek... waiting is waiting not dating. Even if they do rhyme.
14i laughed out loud when the little boy asked "daddy?" to McSteamy. hilarious.
15Am I the only one who got the impression that Ava's not coming back again? Ever?
16Because when Alex closed his eyes as she started talking about her husband, he wasn't keeping her out, he was keeping himself in. He didn't chicken out, he made a choice to not be Izzie. I hope she doesn't come back.
People Who Kicked Ass this Ep: Norman, Callie, Cristina, Mark, Meredith, Ear-Boy.
People Who Sucked Ass This Ep: Derek, Izzie, George, Chief.
Lexy is growing on me a bit, I found her really irritating at first. I like the idea of Callie and Christina living together, they're both strong and opinionated women and two of my favorite characters
The guy with the chainsaw totally freaked me out, I
don't see how they weren't traumatized by witnessing it. I know they work in a hospital and all.. but that was extreme.
17I actually liked this episode but i agree, Norman is leaving so soon lol just when we were all starting to like him. I remember him from Gilmore Girls he was Rory's Grandpa.
"He did offer one of the most accurate assessments I've ever heard of Grey's: "You surgeons, you're all just a bunch of little children running around with your scalpels and severed feet and inappropriate sex in inappropriate places."
hahaha i laughed out loud when he said that
it was funny cuz it was true.
Lexie still annoys me, but that cat story she said, was kinda sweet I guess, in a weird way. I think Meredith and her will start getting along eventually, they have no choice though, since they work together.
Christina is awesome as always. I loved it when she scoffed at Izzie and George when they were eating lunch
Typical Christina
I'm glad Derek and Mark are starting to become friends again. AND LOL @ the "daddy" thing, Mark's reaction was priceless.
18I thought this was a pretty good episode- Meredith's banter with the earless kid was really cute. And Mark and Derek were hysterical- I'm so glad they're back to being friends.
I literally fistpumped when the chief said Dr. Hahn would stay. If simply for practical purposes...I mean, when you get rid of not one, but TWO head surgeons in a hospital it's generally practical to replace them. My boyfriend is not as psyched, but thinks she might grow on him, so I understand that some people need to warm up to her. But having her AND Sydney back in the same episode was like watching old Grey's again.
I LOVED Alex and Ava together. I thought they were SOOO cute when they were in bed, but I wish she hadn't taken off. She probably won't be back until sweeps
Also, when Norman said he was leaving my boyfriend and I were both disappointed, but at the same time, we realized that it needs to happen. Then my bf sighed, turned to me and said "I miss Gilmore Girls." It was funny- and yes I've turned my bf onto all my girly shows
Finally, I couldn't be more pissed off at Derek. I'm sorry, WHY do you need to start dating?!?!? Ugh.
19When I heard chainsaw carving and guy with a foot to amputate- I called! The ear boy and all that Meredith did for him- awww. Derek HAS to start dating now- oh really??? Meredith is trying to change things in her life, and he HAS to start dating. Like everyone has been saying- Izzie and George together is just blah and silly, but I like Callie and Cristina bunking together
20Lexie telling Mere about her mom's dog was nice and I think Mere will find it really hard not to like her half sister- probably bring a reconciliation with her dad.
I did cry at the end with Mere and her mom's ashes. The Chief being there really made it touching (IMO). I am enjoying the season so far- keep it coming!
sorry - "I called IT" !
21I'm pretty much over this show because I kind of just want to punch all the annoying characters in the face. But I LOVED the "Hi Daddy!" prank, I was cracking up for a few minutes.
22After seeing the previews last week, I thought this episode would be the worst ever. To my suprise, it was the best all season. I loved it. It was funny, and sad. I loved the little boy trick or treating for ears. He was so cue! Is Ava coming back? Where did she go. George and Izzie gross me out. Mark was so funny! All that needs to happen is Meredith and Derek being together!!!
23i knew that would happen to norman from day one
24That was a really good episode. I normally really dislike Meredith, but she acutally came across as human in this episode.
As for the Alex falling asleep thing, I kinda thought that he was finally so content since Ava/Rebecca was back that he was finally able to sleep. Which would be why she left her shirt. But I think she'll be back, even if it is to throw a wrench into a possible Alex/Izzie thing. (There is now way she and George will last!)
And great call on Dr. Hahn! She is the shot in the arm that Grey's needs without Addison and Burke around. They need a meanie.
25OH MY GOSH, jajajajajaja i just realized that norman was rorys grandpa! AJJAJAAJAJAJAJJ
26LOVED Christina and Callie bonding over how much their lives sucked! Cracked me up. And Lexy was so cute, with her costume and then the cat story. I really really am hoping that Lexy will force Meredith to finally be comfortable with intimacy and she and Derek can get back together. I don't like the idea of him dating.
And Caterpillargirl, all I can say is "...Seriously?"
27yah, yah, i agree vickibug....
get on with the george thing.. ALEX AND IZZIE FOREVER! jajaja.. will alex have to choose between izze or eva? OF COURSE. it will be fabulous
28alex and ava were so hott together! she gave a pretty compelling performance - cheesy WITHOUT making you want to vomit a.k.a meredith in every episode
29I too really liked the espisode. Greys is best when it a good mix of laugh oput loud moments and deeper ones. The father and the daughters heart? Wow, pull at my heart strings.
30This episode made me scream out loud, with the chainsaw bit.
I dont like Ava or whatever her name is, she was getting all miffed about him not coming back to her, hello he is a surgeon you plastic adulterer.
31For some reason I've seen to be less and less interested about this show...
32"Lookin'. It sounds way dirtier without the 'g.'"
LOL, so funny, and true. What about the sexy love or sibling love? Omg, i laughed a lot last night. And I agree, since when does waiting derek mean dating derek??? I too felt bad for Norman, but not too much, hehe. My favorite bit of the show: Ava coming back! She's a bit blah for me, but it means character development for Alex, which we haven't had before! I love when he's happy.
33I forgot! My other favorite moment: George's heart speech! omg, I had tears in my eyes. no matter what he does (i.e. cheat on his wife) I can't stop loving him.
34This is the first episode this season that actually felt like Grey's I fell in love with.
I love how Mer used her networking skills to help Earless Boy. I also love how Mark, Bailey, and the rest of the crew were willing to perform the surgery pro bono. Also, I felt Lexie was a little annoying at first, but I liked that she shared her dead kitty/dead mommy story with Meredith.
The pranking between Mark and Derek was hysterical...especially when Earless Boy called him "Daddy?"
I did not, however, appreciate when Mark told the rest of the female staff at the hospital that Der was "lookin'."
The OR scene when Cristina and Callie were laughing about their pathetic lives was hilarious. I think these two will make great roomies, as long as Cristina's mess doesn't bug Callie too much.
"Ava" coming back wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. I kinda wish Alex woulda made it back it time, but instead she left him her top, but whatev.
One of my top fave scenes of the night was when Dr. Hahn accused Cristina of sleeping her way to the top! How funny was that?!
I love her brutal honesty. She's the female equivalent of Dr. Burke...love it!!
George & Izzie isn't gonna work. He's had more booty than anyone else on the show (besides McSteamy). They had a perfectly good friendship going on, and they couldn't just leave it at that. She was trying to fill the void that Denny left, and George hastily married Callie in an effort to fill the void his dad's death left.
Props to Bailey on that "it takes two" speech she gave George. I felt bad that she missed little Tuck's first Halloween, but she was helping out Earless Boy. I just hope she can balance her work and her life better than the Chief could.
35Is it too much to ask for more Alex make-out scenes? Seriously. Justin Chambers is hot.
Actually, my favorite part of the episode was the speech from the guy who cuts off his foot about how it feels crazy to not have control over your life. Something about that just hit me.
36I loved this episode!
-Alex and Ava - wowie! I want to be kissed like that (and it would be just fine with me if it was by him!!!)
37-Loved the comment about "sexy love" vs brother/sister love. I'm adding that phrase to my vocabulary
-Chainsaw guy = creepy
-Gizzie = YUCK. There is absolutely no chemistry between them. It's wierd they don't even look right together...
LOVED when Christina said Meredith was carrying around a "bag full of mommy". HA!!!
There were LOTS of funny moments in this episode. Derrick handing the earless kid money after he calls Sloan "Daddy?" HA!!! Also Christina and Callie losing it in surgery when they started talking about their failed love lives. Might as well laugh about it!
Two tear-jerker moments: George's speech that he would have given his father his heart to save him was the first one. He is one of the BEST at giving tear-jerker speeches. (Remember how good Izzie was at giving tear-jerker speeches when Denny was still around? OMG! She made me cry every week!) The second moment was when the Chief reached into the bag of ashes and helped Merideth wash her mother down the scrub sink. If you take a moment and think about that, he was actually scooping up the ashes of the woman he loved and made love to into his hands. That's about as deep as it gets.
38I really enjoyed this episode...well aside from "Gizzie" making it through the day.
I love the idea of a Callie/Christina pairing. And WOOHOO to Dr. Hahn!!!
As for Izzie telling Christina off...I'm tired of Izzie wanting to be "liked" and being made the victim. She is NOT the victim, especially in this situation.
39Private Practice has been picked up for the full season.
40I get that ABC is really into the Halloween thing this year, but Grey's shouldn't have done a holiday episode. It doesn't work with their timeline. Since the new interns just started, it would still be summer, maybe early September.
41Loved George and Bailey's heart-to-heart on the bench. And that they had the same sort of scene after George failed his test last season.
I'm a huge supporter of team Gizzie. I don't think they're going to last, or meant to be, or whatever. But they do make sense. It really isn't that uncommon for best friends to become more than that, especially with them given their situations. And, except for the whole adultery thing, they almost perfectly mirror a relationship I was in last year. So its kind of fun to watch, and really Katherine and TR's acting is dead-on, especially with the whole akwardness thing.
Love that Christina and Callie are going to live together, that's going to be interesting.
Is it just me or did Rebecca/Ava get prettier? I hope she comes back or Alex tries to find her. He needs a real relationship.
And what is up with Derek needing to start dating? I thought he was going to wait, and if he happened to find someone else he'd move on..? But i did love the daddy prank. priceless.
I liked this episode ... the "daddy" part was hilarious ... so were Callie & Christina comparing their lives. I liked how Dr Hahn talked to Christina ... because I feel Christina could talk the exact same way to someone else. I think we'll have great moments with those two together. I like how Meredith convinced people to make the kid ear surgery ... but the ashes story was close to ridiculous. I felt so sorry for Bailey missing her son's Halloween ... is it me or her marriage might be in danger ?
42I hate the whole Gizzie storyline and I hope they will end it as soon as possible. I'm sick of those two. However I must admit that I liked George's speech about giving the heart ... that's the kind of situation where he can be a great character but his all lovelife is a mess and I can't see more of it.
Can
not
deal
with
Gizzie
(gag)
43poooorrrr alex
44if ava doesnt come back, hes had a rough time with her and izzie last week.
ill take him...
Alex didn't close his eyes to keep Ava out or to keep himself in. He fell asleep. That's why Ava was talking about how her daughter didn't always sleep without a shirt with her scent on it. Alex hasn't been able to sleep. With Ava near him, he could. I personally love their little thing. Alex was always such a womanizer, it's nice to see a more tender side of him.
45The writers for GA are so tone deaf. Are we - or Christina - really supposed to believe that Izzie gives one crap about hurting Callie? Maybe is she had shown her one ounce of respect or kindness since the day she started, that would be believable. They can't just bring nice Izzie back, and think we are going to forget how nasty she has been for 1+ seasons. But then again, the writing on this show has gotten so inconsistent, I shouldn't be surprised.
46I'm so over both George and Izzie, when are they going to start exploring more of everyone else's storyline. They are wasting both McSteamy and McDreamy.
47Hooray for hiring Dr. Hahn! I think she could inject some much needed sass into Grey's.
48oh my gosh i really felt like ava was gone forever, and it made the episode soooooo good. i was so diappointed when he didn't get back in time. norman is old and alex can't have sex with him! grr! the funny grey's was back this episode and that made me really happy. especially "daddy" i could NOT stop laughing. i liked the boy without ears.
anyways, i second, third, fourth and eightysixth ya'll that the gizzy plotline is like the song that never ends! i'm sooooooo over it! i can't even see the chemestry on set, maybe it's because i know they're bfg's in real life and there's no way that it could ever stem from any real passion.
and yes, ralenth, sass will come with hahn and with sass comes my personal happiness!
49definitely wasn't a heart-stopping, nail-biter episode but the quality of it was still really good.
-grossest moment: when that guy tried to cut off his foot EW
50-person who I felt most sorry for: Norman (he's such a friendly guy being bossed around my 25 year-old's! you cant help but pity him!)
-best acting in this episode: Bailey
-saddest moment: when Meredith poured down her mother's ashes
-funniest moment: Callie and christina laughing about their sad love lives during surgery !! >.
