This is pretty shocking: Ryan Gosling has suddenly dropped out of Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Lovely Bones, in which he was supposed to play Susie's father. Mark Wahlberg stepped in to fill the role on Sunday after reading the script, and the film is still scheduled to start shooting today in Pennsylvania.
I was pretty excited when I heard Gosling had been cast in the film, and he certainly seemed committed to the role, recently gaining weight and growing a beard. Variety said only that "creative differences" caused Gosling to leave on Friday.
I'm a fan of Wahlberg — I thought his performance in The Departed last year totally made the movie, and I've been excited for his upcoming starring roles in The Happening and The Fighter. But I certainly wasn't expecting this. Can you see Wahlberg in this role? And does Gosling's exit make you worried about The Lovely Bones?

Lame of Gosling, he doesn't have the best reputation in Hollywood so not to suprising. I honestly never saw him in the role to begin with, I like him as an actor, but he looks to young for the part. Wahlberg will be an even better fit, and his roles have been amazing lately, such a good actor- love him!!
1Regardless of his reputation in Hollywood, the poor guy seems pretty committed, gaining 20 pds for the role. Heck he's even on location right now, so it's hard to see that it's his decision to leave the production. Wahlberg may have the age down, but I don't really see him as the griefing dad type. Hope he proves me wrong. I feel really bad for Gosling. The people who kept complaining about the age difference on imdb or what have ya are probably partying right now.
2I might be in the minority, but I can totally see Walberg in this role much more than Gosling. Glad he left the role.
It was a good decision. He probably knew he wasn't right for it.
Don't get me wrong - I love Ryan, but this was not his role. It just wasn't.
3What? I was getting used to the idea of Ryan in that role. Oh well bring on Marky Mark. I'm sure he will great too.
4I'm a big Ryan Gosling fan, but I always thought he was way to young for this role. I think Mark Wahlberg will be great.
5lol i don't really care either way cuz i like em both
6This isn't the first time Jackson has had a change of character the day of or before filming. Back in the LOTR days (LOL), the same happened with the character of Aragorn. Stuart Townsend was set for the part and had started filming when Jackson realized he was too young, in came Mortensen and the rest is Oscar history!!!
7Wait, what have I missed here? What reputation does Ryan Gosling have in Hollywood?
And tiabia, I didn't know that about Lord of the Rings. I really can't picture Stuart Townsend as Aragorn.
8wow- this all happened last minute. Ouch- he has probably had to pass on other things because of this. I like them both and I was curious to see how the age thing would come around. Still looking forward to it and still a good cast. Do we know who will play Susie's sister (forgot her name)? that is a big part as well.
9I think Marky Mark will do great.. he actually plays dramatic quite well.. and he's more suitable/believable as the dad.
10Both are good actors, but I honestly can see Mark Wahlberg doing an even better job than Ryan Gosling in this role. All should be well.
11I agree, and I was never a big Wahlberg fan until The Departed, but he was really amazing in that movie.
12I actually think Mark will do a better job! Congrats to him. I do love him & Gosling though.
13This worries me a bit about the movie. I would think that Gosling wouldn't quit the day before filming if there wasn't something seriously wrong...
Hopefully this doesn't mean the script is terrible.
14I was sad to hear they were making this book into a movie because I can't watch movies that I've read the book to. No matter how good the movie is, it doesn't do the book justice. But with Mark Wahlberg in it, I might just watch it.
15Wow- I feel bad for that production! I bet those poor people are scrambling right now...this sort of thing is always really tough on everyone involved, especially the crew
Either way, I was looking forward to seeing Gosling in this role, but I completely agree with you Buzz about Wahlberg and The Departed. His role made that movie, and I was glad to see him nominated for it. I'm going to see this movie either way, so I look forward to seeing what Wahlberg brings to the table.
16Not sure about this at all, sorry Mark is not the actor Ryan is. I was a little worried about Ryan playing a daddy, but had gotten used to the idea.
17I really couldn't see Gosling as the father of a 14-year-old. He looks too young. Wahlberg I can believe.
18I think Mark will do a good job..
Not sure what to think about Gosling...
19Think this could be the role that'll break Mark Wahlberg into the bigger league - it'll probably stretch him as a character actor and after The Departed that can only be good. Although sorry to see Ryan Gosling go, I think it's great that the role came up for Wahlberg!
20i think marky mark (and yea i still insist calling him that) can pull off the role. i'n not a huge fan of him but i have enjoyed movies he has been in just because he really is good at acting. i think he is capable of softening his style a bit, in other words no mr. tough guy.
and RYAN GOSLING has a reputation? hmm....this intrigues me.
21I'm actually surprised that Ryan was cast to play the father...he seems so young for the role. I can picture Mark in the part.
22Im glad that Ryan wont be in the movie. As much as I love him, he isn't right for the role.
23Mark seems like a better choice, I'm still not sure if he'll do good. but I'm iffy on all the casting for this movie, except for Susie. I cant wait till this is finally out.
I can't see Mark as the grieving type, just as the vengeful, rage-filled type. We'll see, I suppose. Mark is a great actor, after all.
24I am not sure that Mark fits well. I LOVE Mark he plays angry, tough, and gritty well but can he play sensitive father with his life slowly falling apart well? I believe he can just hope it's not to much for him and that he does his best.
Love Mark and Ryan!
Hope both their careers go as planned as they get even better as time goes on!
25YAY Mark!
26Hey Sofi,
27The part of Susies sister is going to a girl from New Zealand called Rose McIver. There is a link to show you who she is

Kinda gutting about Ryan Gosling not doing it anymore but i kind kinda see Mark Walberg in the part.
i think marky mark (hee hee) is going to be great in it! i like ryan gosling but i don't think he is irreplaceable in this role.
28Ok, so I'm a HUGE RG fan and I'll admit that Mark Wahlberg is a good choice to play this role considering his past work(The Departed, Four Brothers). HOWEVER, no matter how perfect he is for this role, there is no doubt in my mind that Ryan's portrayal would have been more intriguing. No one can say, even though he wasn't the ideal choice for most, that he couldn't pull it off. Deep inside him is a whole range of emotions that he can easily being to the screen to play any role placed before him. He's that committed to what he does, hardworking, and his talent is immense.
29I don't see Mark as Susie's father, I like Ryan better! I somehow do not picture Mark in anything but action movies.
30He got fired for being a diva, and to fat, according to Page Six
http://www.nypost.com/seven/10232007/gossip/pagesix/last_minute_ax.htm
31It doesn't say anything about being "too fat". If that's the reason then Peter Jackson should take a long look in the mirror, no? Too bad for them because at least Ryan can play an entire range of roles whereas Mark only play the macho tough guy in every single role. As well as he plays that role, I just can't stand looking at his face, he looks like a dog.
WOOF.
32I'm a little worried now, but I think I'd still see it. I loved the book. It would've been nice to see Gosling in it, but Wahlberg is a great actor too!
33i thought gosling was too young to play susies father, so i def. don't see this as a bad thing.
34You're right, it didn't say to fat, JustJared reported that, here:
http://justjared.buzznet.com/2007/10/23/peter-jackson-ryan-gosling/
35This movie is gonna suck cause Ryan Gosling is a gifted and tremendously talented actor while Mark Wahlberg is always playing the same angry, tough guy character. He can't act and his performances are constantly cringe worthy and one note. What a waste. Peter Jackson is a freakin' idiot.
