Hi, character development! Welcome to Private Practice. I hope you're settling in for a long stay at Oceanside Wellness, because when you're around, this show is so much better. Downright enjoyable, even! I'm finally starting to feel like this thing is going somewhere. To read my thoughts and add your own, just read more
In addition to character development, we got something new this week: a coherent theme! The episode began with Sam demonstrating his amazing mind-body connection theory before a live studio audience, and all of the cases from there on out had some relation to mental issues expressing themselves as physical problems: the woman with Crohn's Disease whom the hospital folks and even her own mother thought was faking; the kid who was, literally, lovesick; the older woman who thought her husband was randomly falling asleep because he didn't really love her.
All of this was set against the background of Addison's party, a gathering that nobody (save for Dell) wanted to attend. I wish we would have learned a little more about why they didn't RSVP — Violet, at least, admitted that she was done with new people — but maybe it boils down to the fact that Addison's still an outsider. I'm finding her personality inconsistent — one minute, she's tough Addison, the next she's weak and needy (despite Pete's insistence that Addison "doesn't need"). But for the moment, I'm willing to chalk that up to her being in a new place.
I thought the whole Addison-wants-a-baby storyline had been dropped too abruptly, so I'm glad that it resurfaced. Now she knows Naomi lied to her, and she still craves the hope that goes along with knowing there's a chance, however slim, that she could have a baby. Does this renew Addison's quest to get pregnant? (And is that where all this sexual tension with Pete is going? Their hookup seems pretty inevitable.)
A few other thoughts:
- Violet still bugs. I know it's a bylaw of television that every shrink must have personal problems, but this is just annoying. And now Cami's given her a little shred of hope that Allan might still be interested. Greeeeeat.
- I'm really glad we're seeing more of the interactions between the doctors at Oceanside as they collaborate on cases. This episode was the first time I really got a feel for how the clinic works.
- Shonda Rhimes has a thing with Jane Does who turn out to be named Rebecca, huh?
- My love for Cooper continues to grow, even though he's still this gross guy who has sex with women he meets online. This is two weeks in a row that we've seen him being a good doctor and a good friend. I'm even rooting for him to be honest with Violet, even though it's such a cliche.
- Am I evil for laughing when the sleeping man fell over the first time? Yeah, probably.
- Yay for seeing the doctors hang out beyond the confines of Oceanside for once! Might they actually evolve into characters with full lives and logical feelings? A girl can dream.
Your thoughts? Anyone else kind of feeling the Private Practice magic (or, at least, non-mediocrity)? And can someone defend Violet?

Agreed. For the first time, I actually cared about the doctors more than the random patients. Plus, a few LOL moments - Violet to Addison - You're a little bit of a "crazy", aren't you? and Dell screaming Vulva.
1Violet and Naomi are my least favorite characters... somehow they are becoming more annoying as the season progresses.
I liked the pilot Naomi( it seemed like she and Addisson had more of a connection)
I'm liking Dell's spunk
2
lol that part was hilarious
3I'm with you on this, Buzz. Last night was the first night I finally cared (a little) about the characters since we got to know them and what they do as a team a little better. I'm still bothered by Addison's whiny side; maybe the strong Addison we saw in Grey's was just a cover for her needy nature. She--or the writers--just can't seem to figure out who she needs to be. Dell had some of the best lines last night and, like you, I think Cooper shows real compassion, even if he does have that grosser side to deal with. I didn't connect with the patient's cases so much last night, but I did connect more with the doctors. And so, I'll keep watching, hoping that next week or the next (or the next) everything will come together and truly get me past the mediocrity that I've been feeling for the past several weeks.
4I kind of wish they had just kept Cooper and Violet as BFFs instead of doing a romantic thing. I feel like there aren't many strong male/female friendships on TV, whereas in real life I know lots of people who are just friends with someone of the opposite sex. I really liked their close friend dynamic in the first few episodes, and I think that would have been interesting to explore--I'm getting tired of everyone on TV either being lovers or enemies with no in between.
5i agree with you lizzie- i really liked them as friends. i mean we already have the ex husband ex wife relationship, and a want to hook up with each other relationship (pete and addison).. i liked their friendship! it reminded me of friendships i have with boys that are like my older brothers to me. cooper acted like that best friend old brother type guy at first- it was great chemistry!
6I still can't watch Kate, but Tim was better this time. Still watching only for Paul and Amy.
7I thought the episode was OK. Violet needs to tone down the over-acting and Pete needs to lessen his smirks but aside from those, it was a good epi.
8love this show!!
9is mean to say that Addison's obvious and fuddled way of acting "twiter-pated" around Pete are getting old?
Also how is the Therapist in this show the most mentally unstable of them all?
Naomi .. just give in take Taye Diggs back .. i would .. on looks alone .. shallow .. yes i am lol
Cooper .. I heart you in many weird ways .. please save Violet from herself ..
Dell.. you're young and insightful .. lol you go to mid-wifery school .. i love that .. but your domain is your domain
Pete.. oh you so love Addison
Sam ... the arm and hammer guy!!! i loved it!
The patient stories are a lil out there .. mixing in a touch of grey's and a touch of House .. seriously ... not too shabby tho .. maybe next patient can be more of a csi thing lol
10Its getting better each episode! Violet is psychotic but admit it, someone on every show has to be.
11And Dell the hot midwife(?)!! How could anyone not love Dell?!
